Uma Stresses Over 'Motherhood'

Filed under: Comedy », Casting »

Back in February, Uma Thurman surprisingly signed on to play Nanny in the upcoming film, Eloise in Paris, which is set to begin production this June in London, Paris, and New York. But before she begins filming that, Variety reports that the actress is quickly slipping another caregiver role into the mix -- a comedy by writer/director Katherine Dieckmann called Motherhood.

At least this flick will have her playing someone her age. (I still can't get over the fact that adapting Eloise's Nanny brought to mind thoughts of Uma.) She will star as "a harried mother of two prepping for her daughter's sixth birthday party as myriad urban challenges confront her," while Minnie Driver and Anthony Edwards will play her best friend and husband.

There's nothing like those pesky "urban challenges." Does someone steal the last package of fancy streamers or something? The shoot is scheduled to last 25 days, which gives her just enough time to wrap up before Eloise, and the film is said to be taking advantage of new Gotham tax incentives. While a fan of Thurman, I'm still wary of her comedic roles, so if you're like me, there's always The Life Before Her Eyes, which heads into limited release this week.

Ed note: Cinematical would just like to point out that it's awesome to have Goose back on the big screen. "More Goose!" we shall always shout from whichever rooftop will allow it.

Whatever Happened to the 'Fast Times at Ridgemont High' Clan?

Filed under: Comedy », Fandom »

Fast Times at Ridgemont HighI'll be quite honest with you: The only reason I love to read these "Where are They Now" pieces is for the photos. When you remember a particular actor for a certain role -- and then never hear from them again -- it's often fun to see what they turned into. Fortunately, some actors and actresses age very well (ahem, Jennifer Jason Leigh). Others ... not so much (poor Brian Backer). Moviefone is currently hosting a "Where are They Now" for the cast of Fast Times at Ridgemont High; the classic teen sex comedy (that DOESN'T suck) currently celebrating its 25th anniversary. Yup, it's already been 25 years since Jeff Spicoli ordered a pizza to his classroom (I always dreamed of doing this growing up, but never had the balls), and so why not catch up with the crew and see what they've been up to since.

Of course, we all know what happened to Sean Penn. Following Fast Times, he went on to never star as a stoner surfer dude in another movie again -- even if Spicoli will most likely go down as his most memorable role of all time. With the exception of folks like Penn, Leigh, Forest Whitaker, Anthony Edwards, Nicolas Cage (originally credited as Nicolas Coppola in the film, aka "Brad's Bud"), Eric Stoltz and -- for a majority of the '80s -- Judge Reinhold, everyone else sort of faded away into oblivion. Phoebe Cates has been having kids with Kevin Kline, Brian Backer went from scoring with Jennifer Jason Leigh to scoring a feel-sorry-for-ya spot in Amy Heckerling's 2000 flick Loser (heh), and Robert Romanus (ticket scalper Mike Damone) fell so far into obscurity, there's not even a current pic of the guy. Then again, I'd rather have a starring role in one classic film than appear in 20 duds. So check out the gallery, and let us know what your favorite Fast Times memories are ...

Early Zodiac Reviews Hit the Net

So it looks like David Fincher's Zodiac is starting to delve into the test screening venue, and a bunch of folks have written to AICN with their own mini-reviews of the film. First, you might wanna check out the official one-sheet for the film which JoBlo snagged a few days ago. That's a smaller version of it to the right of your screen, and I'm certainly digging its dark and mysterious vibe.

A little background: Zodiac is based on Robert Graysmith's books about the infamous Zodiac killer and stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Robert Downey Jr., Mark Ruffalo and Anthony Edwards. Ruffalo and Edwards play two San Francisco detectives hunting the elusive criminal, while Downey Jr. and Gyllenhaal play a reporter and cartoonist for the San Francisco Chronicle. And now for the reviews; three of them to be exact. The first reviewer loved the flick, noting that "not only is it a great piece of filmmaking but easily one of the best films about an investigation I've ever seen." So far so good, right?

The next dude also liked the pic, though admitted it wasn't one of Fincher's best. He says, "Though I didn't think it was quite as good as either Se7en or Fight Club, I nonetheless found it almost consistently compelling, suspenseful and dramatically effective." However, there's always room for the negative, and our last reviewer wasn't as keen on the film as the first two were. "If I had seen the film not knowing who directed it, the last person I would have guessed is David Fincher and, like Panic Room, I'm at a loss as to why he chose this material as it doesn't give him a whole lot of room to work." Of course, all three of these reviews are filled with detailed plot descriptions and spoilers, so read them at your own risk. Currently, the pic's running time is just under three hours. And, with a release date of January 19, 2007, there's a good chance Fincher will fiddle a bit with the final product. My one main concern: Why such a crappy release date?
