'Where the Wild Things Are' Gets a Poster and a Trailer Update

It's been so long since we heard anything about Spike Jonze's Where the Wild Things Are that you would be forgiven if you thought it had been shelved indefinitely. But no! The poster has arrived, courtesy of the Spike Jonze Fan Blog who scanned it from Nick Magazine. You can see it in our tiny Wild Things gallery below. I have to say, I love that all the promotional materials are keeping to a misty, mysterious theme -- in an age where everything is spoiled the moment it starts filming, I love when a studio can keep some suspense going.
However, we'll get our first look at the monsters and Max in action very, very soon. CHUD is reporting that the first trailer (no teaser this time, it'll apparently be a full three-minute trailer set to the Arcade Fire's Wake Up) will be attached to Monsters Vs Aliens, so you have a mere nine days to wait! But just to tease you, here's what CHUD's scooper described: Try as I might, I can't verbalize how I felt about the trailer beyond the most grandiose superlatives: 'beautiful' and 'gorgeous' and 'breathtaking', making me sound like Pete Hammond. The environments in particular (there's a sequence of cutting between 4 shots of Max running through different environments that is absolutely magical) are a work of incredible vision, especially in light of the production methods Spike opted for. It does feel like a 'kids movie' (not pejorative): the trailer repeatedly made me about eight years old, over and over again. Unless I'm an idiot, and you'll see yourself in a week or two, the finalized monsters are some kind of incredible technical achievement.
Anything that sends a person into superlatives has to be worth seeing. Can't wait.
Confirmed: Arcade Fire Scoring Richard Kelly's 'The Box'
Well, now I just feel silly -- thanks a lot, Win Butler. Back in May, rumors began to circulate that Arcade Fire members Butler, Regine Chassagne and Owen Pallet were working on the score for Richard Kelly's The Box, but Butler had insisted there was nothing to those rumors. Now it's eight months later, and as it turns out he was just messing with us. In an interview with Pitchfork, Butler finally fessed up that he had been working with Kelly on the orchestral score for the Twilight Zone-inspired drama. He says, "We didn't really think we were going to do the whole thing, and then it just kind of was easier once we got in. It was like, 'Oh well, we'll just keep going.' It has so much to do with the editing, and your job is just to help the director. It's a very different experience."Kelly's follow-up to Southland Tales is based on Richard Matheson's short story, Button, Button, and centers on a couple who come into possession of a mysterious box that can make all their financial dreams come true. But there's a catch: if they use the box, an innocent person will die (I can almost hear Rod Serling in the background telling me to "Picture a couple..."). The film stars Cameron Diaz and James Marsden as the husband and wife with financial woes, and Frank Langella as the box's strange 'delivery man'. It's a pretty creepy premise that would appear to be a perfect fit for the music of Arcade Fire ... and Kelly's own twisted sensibilities.
Back in November, Will brought us the news that the film had been pushed back for a second time from March to November 6, 2009. Hopefully the delays aren't signs of another troubled production for Kelly.
Arcade Fire will NOT Score Richard Kelly's 'The Box'

I guess members of Arcade Fire like to keep an eye on their online reputation, because it took a total of eight days for the band to reduce a popular rumor to rubble. A little over a week ago, Richard Kelly (Donnie Darko) had posted that, "a very famous band who is honoring us with being the first filmmakers they've ever scored a film with" had signed up to score his upcoming thriller, The Box. Before you knew it, Pitchfork had picked up the story and was reporting that Arcade Fire was that "famous band".Cut to one week later and Arcade's co-founder, Win Butler, posted the following message on his blog (through the band's official site): "Arcade Fire is NOT doing the soundtrack to any film. We are all off for the summer, writing songs, reading books and keeping our plants alive" -- although he did concede that he might compose some original music for the film along with band mate Owen Pallet (Final Fantasy).
The Box takes place in 1976, where an unhappily married couple (Cameron Diaz and James Marsden) receive a mysterious box from a stranger (Frank Langella). The box will reward the couple with a massive payday, but only on the condition that a complete stranger dies in return. Erik gave us the heads up on some production photos back in February, but so far there is no release date. Hopefully the 'stink' of Southland Tales has finally worn off, and Kelly will be able to secure an official date soon.
