'Arrested Development' Inches Closer to the Big Screen
Filed under: Comedy », RumorMonger », Scripts », Fox Searchlight », DIY/Filmmaking », Newsstand », Remakes and Sequels »
We've run numerous Arrested Development stories since the series was canceled in 2006, and you can probably file this one in the same land of "Yes, sometime soon!" But it never hurts to keep fueling the fan fire, and remind Fox that we'd really really like the Bluths to return. It might be closer than we all think as according to The Hollywood Reporter, Mitch Hurwitz and James Vallely are actively working on a script for an Arrested Development movie. Hurwitz will direct the film. Hurwitz has said in the past that he wouldn't even begin to write a script unless all of the actors were committed, and THR notes that schedule conflicts remain one of the biggest hurdles of a big-screen Bluth reunion. But perhaps this is a sign that Hurwitz and Vallely know something we don't, and that the super careers the show spawned (notably Jason Bateman, Michael Cera, and Will Arnett) will leave enough of a gap for a movie.
When Cinematical caught up with Arnett in New Orleans, he confirmed there wasn't a script, but was optimistic that the film would begin shooting by the end of the year. "It's really just a matter of getting a script. I know that the studio is ready to go and everyone's kind of ready, but there's a lot of moving parts. There's a lot of people in the cast, a lot of schedules and stuff, but we're in that process now of figuring it all out, actively." Let's be optimistic and hope we see them start filming Arrested Development: The Movie by December or January. I just want my Bluths back!
'Arrested Development' Documentary Coming to the Big Screen

When I was on the Jonah Hex set, Will Arnett said that it was actively in the works. "We're trying to get it done, trying to get all the pieces together to do it. It's something we're actively in the process of doing. There is no script yet, but I've been talking a lot to Mitch about it, and I think that the goal has been to start shooting by the end of the year. It's really just a matter of getting a script. I know that the studio is ready to go and everyone's kind of ready, but there's a lot of moving parts. There's a lot of people in the cast, a lot of schedules and stuff, but we're in that process now of figuring it all out, actively." Of course, Michael Cera's made comments to the contrary, so put your faith where you will.
In the meantime, one group of fans have pooled their resources and put together an Arrested Development documentary. Their official website reports that they're currently going from town to town, interviewing fans in order to raise awareness about the show and its tragic fate. They've already gotten a trailer together featuring interviews with the cast and crew of the show. Maybe the quotes are new to you, maybe they're not, but they might help stave off the pangs of addiction. The trailer is embedded below the jump. Enjoy, and keep flying Bluth flag.

Michael Cera and Jack Black Talk About Going To 'Year One'
Filed under: Comedy », New Releases », Sony », Newsstand », Movie Marketing », Summer Movies »
The buzz might be mixed on this weekend's primitive buddy comedy Year One, but the combination of Jack Black and Michael Cera is a pretty irresistible one on-screen and off. Our friends at Moviefone caught up with the comedic duo, who were more than happy to talk about getting back to their prehistorical roots (both in the acting and follical sense of the word), define bromance, rip on each other's bad breath, and update us on the Arrested Development movie, School of Rock 2, and whether or not either of them will be doing some ghostbusting. From the sound of it, neither actor really enjoyed being a caveman thanks to feathery wigs that just never stay out of your lunch (welcome to the fun of long hair, boys!), and the close encounters with bodily excrement. When asked what time period they'd like to return to, both opted for eras of a little more refinement:
If you guys could live during any time throughout the course of history, when would it be?
Black: My favorite time in history ... the Renaissance.
Cera: I would say ... the '30s. The 1930s.
Black: The '30s? Wait, isn't that the Depression?
Cera: Like '33, that was a great age.
Black: Come on, the Renaissance! Haven't you ever been to the Renaissance fair? Don't you wish that was real life? A little mead, a little roast ...
That knowledge undoes everything girls have been taught about men! I mean, for years girls have labored under the delusion that you wanted to return to the simpler days of hunting with spears, and cooking by fire. If you prefer civilization then please, start up some petitions or websites or something to set the record straighter ...
Insiders Say Michael Cera Has Agreed to Do 'Arrested Development' Movie!
Filed under: Comedy », Casting », RumorMonger », Fandom »
As fans of TV's great Arrested Development are aware, there has been talk for several months of making a feature film -- talk that has been clouded by the fact that Michael Cera has been the lone holdout among cast members. Everyone else has publicly expressed enthusiasm for the project, but Cera -- who played awkward teenager George Michael Bluth (a stretch, I know) -- has been a negative nellie. He's just a kid, you know, and he's had a lot of sudden success the last few years, and you can't blame a guy for wanting to be cautious about his next career move. But COME ON!Now, at last, it looks like everyone will be laughing and riding and cornholing after all. E! Online's TV maven Kristin Dos Santos says, "Inside sources close to the negotiations of the upcoming Arrested Development movie tell me that ... Cera has finally agreed to do the feature film project." She goes on to say that the show's creator, Mitchell Hurwitz, is writing and directing the project for Fox Searchlight, and that it could go before cameras by the end of the year if everything comes together in time.
Ron Howard, who executive-produced the series and served as its narrator, told Ryan Seacrest at the Oscars that "It's looking very much like we're going to make [the movie], but we've now been asked to stop offering any details. It's cloaked in a little mystery, but it's looking good."
Cera was the only naysayer in the cast, so if he really has come to his senses, there would seem to be no other obstacles. Now, if you're wondering whether the movie will actually be any good, or whether it will suffer in the TV-to-movie translation, well, I don't understand the question and I won't respond to it.
'Arrested Development' Movie Story Revealed!

Now that almost everyone in the cast (holds fist in air, screams "Cera!") has mentioned that they'd be up for an Arrested Development feature film, we turn to any piece of plot information we can get our creepy little perverted hands on. Series creator Mitch Hurwitz was out promoting the new animated show Sit Down, Shut Up (as executive producer) -- which also features Will Arnett and Jason Bateman in its voice cast -- during the TCA press tour, and he provided a much-needed update with regards to a big-screen Arrested Development outing. Hurwitz says, "We want to do it, we have a deal more or less in place from Fox Searchlight, and we're kind of getting all the actors on board."
Sounds good -- a lot of this is stuff we've already known -- but then Hurwitz went and dropped the story bomb on everyone. Do you wanna know what this film will be about? Do you really wanna know? Because it's beyond crazy -- it's so freakin' out there you might need to sit (or lay) down, preferably in a relaxed position with one leg (left?) slightly bent. Ready? Here's what Hurwitz and the gang have planned plot-wise for the film: "We have a story, which is basically Valkyrie meets Hotel for Dogs." Wow. So does that mean the Bluth family will find themselves in a position where they have to hatch a plan to assassinate a group of Nazi dogs? Seems that way, based on that description.
What do you think the movie will be about?

Stuff and Things: Arrested Development Movie Develops Some More
Filed under: Action », Comedy », Drama », Deals », Fandom », Movie Marketing », Comic/Superhero/Geek », Remakes and Sequels », Posters »

Here are some stuff and things for your lazy Sunday:
-- News of that planned Arrested Development movie has finally found its way to the trades, with both Variety and The Hollywood Reporter saying that series creator Mitch Hurwitz is real close to signing a deal to write and direct the film. Ron Howard (who narrated the show), as well as the original cast, are all expected to return (we hope).
-- Two more Star Trek character posters have arrived online, with one featuring Eric Bana as the Romulan villain Nero, and the other shows Zoe Saldana as a very sexy Uhura. These end a pretty busy week for Trek, which began with the debut of the film's first full-length trailer and a special presentation of footage by director J.J. Abrams. Check out larger versions of these posters, as well as the other two previously released character posters, in the gallery below.
-- The 5th Annual Big Apple Film Festival came to a close last night, where yours truly moderated six very fun Q&A sessions over the course of the four-day fest and was on hand for the final awards ceremony. Winning Best Feature was The Living Wake, with The Project taking the fest's Cityscape Award (which goes to the film that best exemplifies the city of New York). Thanks to all those Cinematical readers who stopped me to say hello!
-- Looks like Universal plans to turn those Jason Bourne films into the next James Bond franchise, as Variety tells us the studio has cut a deal with author Robert Ludlum's estate which gives Universal exclusive rights to not only the Jason Bourne character, but also a first look at other Ludlum novels. As far as a fourth Bourne film goes, Paul Greengrass and Matt Damon have already signed on, and George Nolfi is currently writing the script.
Bateman Talks More 'Arrested Development' Movie
Filed under: Comedy », RumorMonger », Fandom », DIY/Filmmaking »
While promoting Hancock over in the UK, Jason Bateman spoke a bit more about that planned Arrested Development movie. Not much has been said about the film in the past couple of months; last we heard, both Michael Cera and David Cross knew nothing about it. But Bateman (who's pretty damn good in Hancock) still seems confident it will happen -- and with the success of Sex and the City on the big screen, why wouldn't he be? In an interview with The Times (who claim "a big-screen version of Arrested Development is planned for next year"), Bateman says of the transition from small to big screen: "When it was on TV, if you missed one word the whole third act could be blown for you. And TV is a different experience. You come home and you've got to finish a call so you miss the first ten minutes or you get snacky and you go to the fridge and you miss another two minutes, so it's a different experience to film." Bateman is currently making the press rounds, so hopefully someone will nail down something a bit more concrete. I mean, if a movie is planned for next year, don't ya think we'd know about it?
The interview itself is worth a read, and Bateman seems like a fun guy to talk to. On the cult-like TV show, he adds: "Arrested Development played late at night in England, so I got a lot of coke addicts and meth freaks. Great. So you've seen me but you just don't remember me."
With most of the cast a lot more popular now, would Arrested Development work as a movie? Or would it lose some of its -- I dunno -- smaller, quieter charm?
P.S. I should also mention that Bateman will be at the Sony Store in NYC (550 Madison) tonight at 6PM for a Hancock Q&A, and to show off some clips from the film. It's a free event and first come, first served. Get there early!
