New 'Avatar' Trailer Washes Away Skepticism
Filed under: Sci-Fi & Fantasy », 20th Century Fox », Trailers and Clips »
It's no secret that James Cameron's Avatar has been fighting an up-hill battle for years. Film geeks, particularly those who spend most of their time online, are a tough crowd to uniformly please, so early buzz on the film was as much an excitement accelerator as it was a dare to dislike. When the first trailer for the film was at long last unveiled back in August, it was met with incredulous, befuddled cries of "Is that it?"
If, like myself, you were disappointed with that first teaser, and if, like myself, you avoided Avatar Day and any subsequent new marketing tactics outside of the normal trailer build up, then maybe this new, full trailer for Cameron's return to science fiction will be the first time you set aside your cynicism and think "Alright, I get what all the fuss is about now." This second trailer is nearly identical to the international trailer that has been making the online rounds lately, except there's one huge difference: this isn't a blurry hint of things to come. Yahoo has the debut, and we all know that means a crystal-clear, HD if-you-want-it look at the alien world of Pandora.
Unlike the first trailer, there's no teasing going on here; this is an exposition-heavy tour of the film's plot, characters, and, most importantly, alien Na'vi. Not only do we have more than one line of dialog now, but we're given context-relevant glimpses at what will, I no longer doubt, be the must-see spectacle film of 2009.
Click on over to Yahoo and check it out. If this expanded foray into jungle battles doesn't get you pumped for December 18th, I don't think anything will.
'Avatar' Behind the Scenes Featurette

The brand new domestic Avatar trailer will arrive online later today at about 1pm EST (10am PST), and at that time we'll let you know where you can go check it out in HD. After all, if we can't be watching these trailers and featurettes on the big screen, the next best thing is HD (and, in my opinion, we really shouldn't judge the film until then). I still have concerns about the story, though, which just seems full of cliches and stuff we've seen countless times before, but I'm personally more excited for the visual experience than I am for any story. Cameron has been talking up the 3D technology in his film for a long time now, and so that's what we should all be looking forward to -- a kickass, monumental moviegoing experience. Until then, everything else is just a tasty little appetizer.
Watch the featurette after the jump.
Watch This: Hitler Hates 'Avatar'
Filed under: Fandom », Trailers and Clips »
It's not exactly original for someone to use this clip from the 2004 film Downfall and change around the dialogue. We've seen it countless times before, with the most recent being Hitler's reaction to the death of Michael Jackson. But the videos are only as good as the person writing the dialogue, and I'm sorry if you don't agree with me here -- but this one just cracked me the hell up.
In the video after the jump, watch as Hitler freaks out over the failure of James Cameron's Avatar trailer, comparing it to The Land Before Time 3 (among other things) with lines like, "He should have left the remake of Ferngully: The Last Rainforest to Lucas!" Thankfully not everyone is hating on Avatar as much as Hitler, and as our own William Goss and Jessica Barnes recently reported, the sneak preview footage in 3D was pretty fantastic to watch.
Will Avatar turn out to be the bomb Hitler thinks it is? Or will it redeem itself by wowing audiences in theaters this December 18? Guess we'll see ... but in the meantime, check out Hitler's hilarious Avatar reaction after the jump.
Discuss: Did the 'Avatar' Trailer Ruin the Buzz?

If ever there was a trailer launch cluster-f*ck, it was this morning with the supposed release of the first Avatar trailer. The domestic trailer was scheduled to hit Apple at 10am EST, but that never happened and there was no immediate explanation as to why it wasn't working. But god bless the French because they got their trailer up and running in time for most people to ... um, kinda trash it. Granted, Avatar supporters will try to reason with you, offering up several different explanations: 1) You need to watch it in HD, or 2) You can't watch it on your computer screen, or 3) You need to watch it in 3D, or 4) You need to watch it in 3D on an IMAX screen, or 5) You need to watch it on Pandora with a half-naked Na'vi chick lying in your lap feeding you glowing blue goo.
In my opinion, though, a trailer is a trailer -- and no matter how we watch it or where we watch it, a potential paying customer should be able to evaluate it without having to add a bunch of junk to the viewing experience. I personally thought it looked pretty cool and different and original, which right off the bat makes it more worthwhile than practically every film that came out this past summer. Does it look like it will change the way we watch movies forever? No. Does it look like a fun moviegoing experience? Definitely. I will say, though, that this is the first trailer for a film that made me actually want to see it in 3D.
But now that the mystique has vanished, and we know what this movie is going to look like, will the buzz diminish? After watching this trailer today, do you want to see this movie more than you did, say, yesterday?
James Cameron's 'Avatar' Trailer Online Now!

UPDATE 3: The Apple links work now. Watch it in HD right over here.
UPDATE 2: Here's a link that works! It's the French trailer, but since there's only one line of dialogue in the whole thing, it'll do until Apple fixes their glitch.
UPDATE: 15 minutes in and it appears Apple is having issues with the trailer launch. Stay tuned ...
Come one, come all -- the long-awaited trailer for James Cameron's much buzzed-about Avatar has finally arrived online over at Apple. The debut trailer -- which is the first footage from the film to be shown to a mass audience outside a convention-like atmosphere -- is part of a larger marketing push for the film this week, which includes the release of several new photos (see gallery below) and a special presentation of an extended 16-minute trailer in 3D to be screened at IMAX theaters across the globe tomorrow.
In the meantime, though, prepare to feast your eyes on what some say is a film that could change the way we watch, well, film. The big-budgeted sci-fi flick follows a paraplegic war veteran (Sam Worthington) who is unwillingly sent to the distant planet of Pandora to help establish a human settlement. It's there that he'll find himself in the midst of a battle between humans and the planet's indigenous Na'vi race. Tack on marvelous, out-of-this-world special effects -- coupled with 3D like you've never seen it before -- and you get the most anticipated film of 2009 that no one seems to know anything about.
Enough babbling ... watch the trailer right over here and then let us know what you think. Does Avatar look like it can live up to the hype? The film drops in theaters on December 18.
'Avatar' Day Details Finally Announced

The 16-minute Avatar trailer will show at 6-7 pm on August 21st, sandwiched between IMAX showings of Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince and will be a blend of what screened at ComicCon, but with some brand new footage added. Though IMAX and Fox are predicting a general geek stampede, they're trying to combat the frenzy by limiting tickets to two per person. (So pick which friend or family member you like the most!) For those of us who don't nab a golden ticket, there's still hope. An alternate, "conventional" trailer will be debuting the same time in 2D and 3D, and will play before Post Grad, Inglourious Basterds, and other summer and fall releases. You won't be able to get away from Avatar footage.
