David O. Russell Signs on for a RomCom?!
Filed under: Comedy », Romance », Deals », Scripts »
Our favorite hot-head filmmaker is clearly in a world of his own, and it looks like that's true not only of David O. Russell's films, but also his career path. He struggled to get Nailed finished in the face of increasing money woes, then the economy tanks, and he starts lining up the projects. One person's meltdown is the next's yellow brick road? First there was The Grackle. Then there was The Silver Linings Playbook. And now -- a romcom.Variety reports that the Huckabees director has signed on to helm a new romantic comedy called Aaron and Sarah for Fox 2000. Surprisingly, this doesn't sound like his usual quirky fare. The feature will focus on a nerdy guy and a popular girl in high school. They meet as freshman, and over the course of "four years of high school, four proms and one funeral, become friends and eventually fall in love." Move over Four Weddings and a Funeral!
But wait, this Chad Gomez Creasey and Dara Resnik Creasey-penned script isn't new, it's just got a new name. It used to be called B.F.F., which we previously wrote about here and here. You might remember, as that second link explains, that this used to be in the hands of Sydney White and George Lucas in Love helmer Joe Nussbaum. I imagine he left when Fox 2000 picked up the script from Rogue last year.
But Russell doing a teen romcom ... this could be very, very good.
Joe Nussbaum Has a 'B.F.F.'

His latest movie, Sydney White, only debuted in the number six spot at the box office over the weekend, but Joe Nussbaum already has his next movie lined up. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the director will helm B.F.F., which was written by Sydney scribe Chad Creasey and his wife, Sydney co-producer Dara Resnik Creasey. The plot involves a boy and girl who meet in high school, become "B.F.F." (best friends forever) and eventually fall in love. Sounds like another sweet teen movie, right? Well, yes, it sounds like that, but apparently the movie, which could be nicknamed "Four Proms and a Funeral" based on THR's given synopsis, will be intended as an R-rated comedy in the tradition of American Pie and, of course, Superbad. In the career of Nussbaum, this does make some sense. After making his Hollywood debut with the innocent teen movie Sleepover, he made the DTV sequel American Pie Presents: The Naked Mile. Then he came back with the innocent with Sydney White and now is going raunchy again. It could be a pattern. We'll see, though I'm not sure where his breakout short spoof George Lucas in Love would fit in.More than anything, B.F.F. reminds me of Whatever It Takes, which I only found funny because James Franco played a character with my name. I guess that wasn't the first or only movie to be about co-ed best friends who finally fall in love, but I guess B.F.F.'s prom thing made me think of WIT's own It's a Wonderful Life-ripped-off prom dance scene. Anyway, if Nussbaum can cross that movie with Superbad, it might not be so terrible. Okay, yeah, it will probably be really awful. But I bet it will make more money than Sydney White, which has so far taken home just over $5 million, which is still better than Sleepover's opening gross of just over $4 million.
New Teen Comedy 'BFF' Lets the Geek Get the Girl

Just one week ago, my Cinematical Seven list of crappy movie endings started with Pretty in Pink. While the geek, Duckie, was supposed to get the girl, Andie, pressure from Molly Ringwald and the film's producers resulted in Blane getting her. Now a week after my list and over two decades since Jon Cryer was left in the dust, things, they are a-changing. Rogue Pictures has purchased a romantic comedy spec from staff writers on Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, Chad Gomez Creasey and Dara Resnik Greasey, called B. F. F. In case you're rusty with grade school lingo -- that totally, like, stands for Best Friends Forever. The spec deals with the lives of a nerdy guy and a popular girl during their four years of high school. After meeting as freshmen, they become friends, deal with four proms, one funeral and eventually fall in love. Ain't romance grand when it comes from dead bodies and lots of corsages? The husband and wife Creasey team say that the feature will be similar to John Hughes' comedies, dealing with the points of view of the boy and girl equally.
It's great that they're giving the geek the girl, but they're definitely aiming high -- the film isn't written yet, and they're already comparing it to long-loved classics. That's a risky step -- as soon as a film like this compares itself to beloved 80's flicks, they usually fall flat. Sometimes they deserve to, and sometimes, promises just make for unreasonable expectations that can rarely, if ever, be met. It's also a big claim for a team who hasn't had a romantic comedy, or any feature, released yet. However, we should be able to judge better sometime fairly soon (IMDb says next year, while Variety says this year), when their re-telling of Snow White, Amanda Bynes' Sydney White, gets released.
