SDCC: Scarlett Johansson on Black Widow and 'Iron Man 2'

Filed under: Action », Paramount », Interviews », Comic/Superhero/Geek », Remakes and Sequels », ComicCon »

I'm not sure what it says about the Hollywood system when the luminous Scarlett Johansson is the most real and ordinary actress I encountered at Comic-Con this year. Now, that sounds like a catty slam on the ladies who made the circuit, or possibly an insult to Johansson, and I don't mean it that way at all. But there was just something about her that was a little less airbrushed and defined, which was unexpected and very refreshing. Also, she's far more gorgeous in person, and incredibly nice. Being around her just makes me want to hide in a hobbit hole, and never go out in public again.

Again, apologies for not being able to credit the proper outlets for their questions. Read on for what Scarlett had to say about Iron Man 2, Black Widow, and joining the Marvel universe ...

Hey Scarlett, were you familiar with the character before
from comic books, or is this whole world new to you?

It was all new to me. I mean, I had met originally with Jon and Kevin [Feige] to kind of discuss a couple of ... just to kind of talk to them about some of the superheroines of the Marvel Universe, and Black Widow was one of them. But I didn't really know anything about the character until I delved into it , and then I started looking at the suit and was like "Ohhhh my God! I gotta get into that!" [laughs] So it was a whole new world for me.

Can you tell us about some of the other female superheroes that you may have discussed?

Oh, let me see if I can remember them! Scarlet Witch was one of them. Blonde Phantom? Is that the other one? And Moon. Am I messing that up? It is the Blonde Phantom, right?

I've never heard of that one ...

Well then, scratch that! That's my own superhero that I'm going to bring to the big screen!

A New Look at Scarlett Johansson and Others in 'Iron Man 2'!

Filed under: Comic/Superhero/Geek », Remakes and Sequels », Images »

When the first glimpse of Scarlett Johansson in Iron Man 2 hit last week, it was surprisingly hard to recognize the actress in her red-headed Black Widow-wear. I'm not sure anyone expected that much of a transformation. Now we can see what Natasha Romanoff looks like when she's not in her Widow ensemble, and for better or worse, Johansson is a whole lot easier to spot.

The image to the right debuted over at Yahoo (go there for the full image), and as you can see, it's 100% Johansson. That's not exactly a bad thing since she's not in her head-to-toe black fighter-wear -- no matter what the clothing is, she's looking cool. But the image is such a small part of this whole project that this doesn't say a whole lot about her casting overall. I wouldn't be surprised if she can do the physical stunts required of her, but the accent. Oh, that accent. Does any other fear for the sequel outweigh what Natasha will sound like?

Nevertheless, Jon Favreau was smart -- instilling hope and excitement to nullify any Johansson pessimism before we see, and hear, more. But even with kinder thoughts ... do you think Scarlett can pull off the Russian sound?

Also, in addition to these photos, USA Today has published another set. See two below the jump.

A Glimpse of Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow!

UPDATED: Check out cleaner versions above from Entertainment Weekly.

Now this is an old-school online "first look." This latest Entertainment Weekly is a big Iron Man 2 and ComicCon preview, and the issue itself was previewed on Entertainment Tonight, where several quick geeks were ready to screen grab it. There will be high-res versions soon, but for now it's kind of fun to revel in the sheer nerdiness it took to obtain it.

Scarlett Johansson looks quite unlike herself. It's not just the wig and the catsuit, her entire face seems to belong to an unknown actress. While I know it's probably just the angle of these two photos, and the fact that they're skewed and blurry, I will hold out hope that she will be totally unrecognizable. I want my Natasha Romanova to be vaguely anonymous looking. One of my problems with the Johansson casting was that she's always the Scarlett Johansson, and doesn't ever seem to match the surroundings. But if there's a cast she can be outshone in, it might just be this one. The world of Iron Man is pretty top-loaded, after all.

I can't wait to see an official picture, though. Considering the Black Widow has a fairly "real world" suit, I'm sure she's going to look like she walked right off a comic cover.

Emily Blunt To Be Black Widow in 'Iron Man 2'?

Filed under: Action », Sci-Fi & Fantasy », Casting », RumorMonger », Newsstand », Comic/Superhero/Geek », Remakes and Sequels »

The roster of Iron Man 2 is filling up! Variety reports that Emily Blunt is currently the front runner to play Natasha Romanov, aka The Black Widow, in Iron Man 2. Neither Jon Favreau or Marvel Studios has commented on the choice.

If it becomes official, Blunt will make up the third part of some already fantastic casting -- you haven't forgotten that Mickey Rourke and Sam Rockwell are tipped to play the villains, and the Black Widow's co-conspirators. The early details have Natasha being employed as Tony Stark's personal assistant, which would put her right where she needs to be to help out Rourke's Crimson Dynamo. Naturally, there will probably be a love triangle between Natasha and Pepper, if Gwyneth Paltrow does return for the sequel.

It's a fantastic casting choice, and more evidence of how superhero flicks continue to raise the bar in the casting department. There's few who would please me as the Black Widow, and Blunt is definitely one who would. She's gorgeous without being an empty sexpot, and would be entirely believable as a smart, Soviet (ex-Soviet, I suppose) superspy. She's proved her acting chops in numerous films, and this is just the kind of popcorn flick she should be in. Plus, she looks fantastic as a redhead. Pick her, Marvel! Pick her!

Will Tim Robbins Play Papa Stark in 'Iron Man 2'?

Who could breed such a perfect specimen of man like Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark? He has to be a bit dashing, and just a smidge brilliant. He must be a good businessman, and a bit of an alcoholic. Plus, it would probably help to have some similar features to Downey Jr. No one would believe that Iron Man came from some nobody. So, who would you pick?

According to Latino Review, Howard Stark will be played by Tim Robbins in the sequel, because "Jon [Favreau] wanted to get a good actor because he didn't think the guy who played Howard in the last film could carry such an important scene." Heck, if Terrence Howard wasn't good enough to stay on, it's no surprise that Favs would look for a bigger player to pull off important Stark family scenes. I'm not drooling over the decision, but it definitely sounds like a solid choice.

And, just to sweeten the deal even more: Rumor has it that Hawkeye and Black Widow are definitely in Iron Man 2, and not just little cameos. A tough Russian woman with flowing red hair, clad in head-to-toe black leather? That sounds like a good idea to me. Any thoughts on who should play her, and Hawkeye for that matter?

Black Widow Gets Canned

For all that I love Marvel movies, here is news of a cancellation which I'm not sad in the least to report. In fact, I think I'm actually grinning while I type this little story. In recognition of the rather poor performance of solo woman superhero flicks, Lionsgate has announced its intention to back out of a deal with Marvel Comics which would have brought Black Widow to the big screen in her very own movie. Planned director David Hayter also cited a lack of interest from potential investors and financing agencies, saying they could not find anyone to "take the project and the character seriously." Imagine that.

Look, I know the Black Widow has been around for a long time, has fought alongside some very important people, and has been in the thick of a number of important stories and events -- but is there anyone among us who really thinks she has the strength to carry a movie on her own? I don't think I buy into the inability of female leads to carry a superhero movie however, I just don't think anyone has done a good job of putting together such a flick. I mean so far we've seen ... Elektra and Catwoman, both of which were sorry attempts at filmmaking in general.
