Kirsten Dunst: I Sing and Dance in 'Spider-Man 3'

Filed under: Action », Music & Musicals », Sci-Fi & Fantasy », Sony », Family Films », Remakes and Sequels »

In case the latest trailer hasn't spoiled enough of Spider-Man 3 for you, Kirsten Dunst supplied SCI FI Wire with some information on what her character is up to as the movie begins. Mary Jane is a successful actress on Broadway, where she sings and dances. And though she didn't specify, I'm guessing that Dunst did her own singing and dancing for the part. The character also apparently wears a necktie throughout most of the movie, though the reason for this is unclear. While Dunst didn't give SCI FI Wire any real plot points, she mentioned that we will get to watch her character deteriorate and get beat down (we can assume she means mentally, not physically). If you dislike her portrayal of MJ as much as I do, this may be something for you to look forward to.

Personally, I can't really look forward to anything relating to Dunst's appearance in the new Spidey movie. But as with any movie she's in that I like (Small Soldiers, Dick, Marie Antoinette, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and many others), I will tolerate her. I just hope that her singing and dancing is a little better than her acting. Maybe if she's talented enough, she can provide her own singing voice for her upcoming role as Blondie front-runner Debbie Harry. Speaking of which, supposedly the casting of Dunst as Harry has upset a lot of Blondie fans, who have been posting complaints on message boards all over the web. I guess I'm not the only one who dislikes Dunst's acting. Fortunately for Dunst, she has an easy reply for all the disappointed: Debbie Harry handpicked her for the part.

Kirsten Dunst -- The New Debbie Harry!?

When shocking, strange or just plain crazy bits of information swim through the veins of movie news, there's often some way to disregard it. Maybe it's a rumor, or maybe the people in question aren't the best in the business -- so you can toss it off to a lack of taste. However, when the news is linked to the well-respected, you have to wonder what's in the water. This isn't the first time Kirsten Dunst news has stopped me in my tracks. I wondered what Sam Raimi was thinking with Spider-Man, and then what Sofia Coppola was thinking with Marie Antoinette. (I actually used to enjoy Dunst, but as time has passed, so has the appreciation.)

Now, it looks like I will have to wonder what Michel Gondry is thinking. The man is responsible not only for intriguing music videos like Cibo Matto's Sugar Water, but also for the surreal Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and the more recent, The Science of Sleep. Now, if inferences on her hints are true, Gondry is doing the unthinkable -- something that truly rivals Lindsay Lohan as Stevie Nicks. In an interview for New Zealand's online mag Stuff, Kirsten Dunst started hinting at her next project with Gondry: "[It's] about somebody who everybody knows, but I can't say who it is." She then admitted that the somebody in question is a "well-known singer." If she is, indeed, going to be singing about a Heart of Glass, let's just hope they use the original music and not a Dunst version. To give her credit, she looks similar, but can she pull of the curling lip and killer eyes?
