Our Favorite Montages: Braveheart
Filed under: Drama », Romance », War », Trailers and Clips »
It's popular to hate on Braveheart these days, but this montage distills some of what I'll always love about the film: the gorgeous scenery, the kilts (I believe the mountain close-up is one of Gibson's final momentsof sexiness), the unrepentant bloodshed, and the way he captured the chilly roughness of the period. I'll always forgive the film its historical errors because it works so well as pure legend (and was drawn from poetry -- read Blind Harry's Wallace if you want Braveheart times ten), and nothing says that better than a bunch of villagers sharing Wallace's kill count. I especially love how its punctuated with that grim, bloody march at the end. No wonder Edward is fretting about ways to get rid of him.

Watch This: 40 Inspirational Speeches in 2 Minutes

Admit it, we're all suckers for a finely-timed inspirational movie speech. Whether it's a war film, a sports film or a film about picking up chicks, it's often these speeches that help us remember a movie -- these are the speeches we quote over and over again until our friends either slap us or simply walk away. Cinematical reader Matthew Belinkie, who you might remember as the brains behind classic videos like The Dark Bailout, has thrown together what is perhaps his greatest achievement yet: 40 inspirational movie speeches in two minutes. I mean, we've got everything in here, and I love how the dialogue times out so that it feels like one very long speech.
Check it out below, and try to see how many movies you can name. Also, feel free to tell us which of these movie speeches is your favorite. (Honestly, the one from Swingers gets me every time.)
'Outlander' To Show Moviegoers What's Underneath a Kilt
Filed under: Independent », Romance », Sci-Fi & Fantasy », Deals », Scripts »
All right girls, which one of you out there sold your soul for Jamie Fraser to finally make it to the big screen? Because you succeeded! According to Variety, Essential Films has optioned the enormously popular Outlander series, and snagged none other than Braveheart scribe Randall Wallace to write it. The script is being shopped out to directors as we speak, with an eye to making it a franchise. For those of you who haven't had the pleasure, Outlander is a series of historical romance novels by Diana Gabaldon. They center on Claire Randall, a strong-willed English nurse who has just been reuinted with her husband after World War II. While on a second honeymoon, Claire steps through a stone circle and is swept back to 18th century Scotland. She becomes ensnared in the life of the Fraser clan -- and is forced to marry the impossibly handsome Jamie Fraser. And then the sex begins.
While there are a lot of very good adventures and plot twists (and the series is much more historically accurate and well written than the usual bodice ripper), I think we can be honest and admit it was the sex that kept everyone going back. While Claire ostensibly wants to get back to her own time and husband, it doesn't stop her from having fun with Jamie every time there's a flat surface. Of course, it turns out that true love is clad in a Fraser kilt, and all ends reasonably well. I confess, I never read past the second book, so I don't know what further diasters await the passionate couple.
Fans have been clamoring for this series to be made since the first book was published -- and I'm surprised it has taken as long as it has. It couldn't have gotten a more perfect writer than Wallace, that's what makes this positively eerie. Now if Gerard Butler signs on to play Jamie, I'm really going to know the dark arts were involved.
Elisabeth's Mom: Braveheart
Filed under: Drama », Fandom »

My mom and I share such similar tastes that I expected her favorite movie to be one I also loved – but I was still surprised to find it was this one! It had a similar effect on us both, even with all the inaccuracies. When I visited Scotland last year, it broke both our hearts that she wasn't with me, visiting the places Wallace really lived, fought and died. Some Mother's Day, I will take her there!
"Asking someone who loves movies to pick one favorite is cruel to say the least. The story must touch my heart, and leave an indelible impression that changes my life. After great deliberation, I chose Braveheart. It gave me everything I could want in a film. A real life hero, an epic story, great performances, great cinematography (you couldn't ask for a more beautiful setting), great musical score, great costumes, drama, battle scenes, and romance. I never grow tired of watching it, and I never make it through the end without tears. I'm willing to forgive its historical transgressions because the film engulfs me, sucks me in and transports me to medieval Scotland. A costume drama of the very best kind. The heart wrenching tragedy of William Wallace left a permanent impression on me. Wanting to know the true story behind the film led me to dig deeper, not only into English and Scottish history, but into my own heritage in a way I never had before." – Julie Rappe
Cinematical Seven: Films with Hilarious Nudity
Filed under: Comedy », Cinematical Seven »

One of the scenes in Forgetting Sarah Marshall that people will be talking about over the virtual water cooler next week is the one that involves Jason Segel doing full frontal nudity. Yes, he lets it all hang out, and what's admirable is that he does it purely for the sake of a joke. That takes courage! That takes guts! That takes ... well, you know.
This isn't the first film to use nudity for laughs, of course. Comical naughty bits have a rich history in Hollywood. Here are seven movies with hilarious nudity.

What's funnier than a naked dude? A naked FAT dude. And what's funnier than a naked fat dude? A naked fat dude wrestling a naked skinny dude in a hotel room, and a hotel hallway, and a hotel elevator, etc., etc.
Leonardo DiCaprio and Vinnie Jones Team Up for Irish King Tale?
Filed under: Action », Drama », Casting »
Are you ready for Leonardo DiCaprio doing an Irish accent? He probably should have played Irish in Titanic, but now he'll really have to master the accent for a historical epic called Freedom Within the Heart. Set 1,000 years ago, the film is about Brian Boru, the High King of Ireland who united the country in battle against a Viking threat. Since Boru was at least 60 when he became King, DiCaprio seems a bit young to play the lead, but according to a story from February, the actor was indeed being sought for that very role. At the time, former soccer pro Vinnie Jones was also reportedly cast as Boru's nemesis, Ivor of Limerick. Now, confirming DiCaprio's involvement is a press release from Limerick.com, which states the two actors will be joining Irish filmmaker Mark Mahon in the village of Tuamgraney, in County Clare, provided the Irish Film Board accepts a bid for the production to shoot there. There are hopes that the movie will bring tourism to the area in the same way movies like Braveheart and Rob Roy have brought people to Scottish locales.Despite earning an Oscar nomination for Blood Diamond, a lot of people thought he did a terrible job with the South African accent, so we'll have to see how he does with the Irish. He could be criticized enough for playing such a legendary figure and not actually being Irish, so if he gets the accent wrong, he'll only make things worse. However, plenty of similar epics have been made without great accuracy, and fans of medieval action probably won't mind.
Check Out the New Apocalypto Trailer

Say what you want about Mel Gibson and his recent run in with the law, the Jews and the bottle, but the dude definitely knows how to paint a pretty picture up on the big screen. Visually, the guy is a genius -- I mean, Braveheart will forever rank high up on my "fun flicks to watch when you feel like kicking the crap out of someone, but can't" list. Same goes for The Passion of the Christ, though, being Jewish, I wouldn't consider myself a member of the Jesus fan club, however Gibson certainly knows how to garner a reaction from an audience through the power of the moving image.
Case in point: The first theatrical trailer for Gibson's upcoming Apocalypto is now available online and, let me tell you -- the thing looks pretty fricking sweet. Set during the downfall of the Mayan Empire, the story revolves around one man's decision to flee his home after he's chosen to become a human sacrifice. While the pic probably won't do a ton of business for Disney (partly due to the whole drunk-driving episode, and also because the film's characters speak in an ancient Mayan dialect), I've decided to check it out based solely on the beautiful, yet awe-inspiring images included in this trailer. Apocalypto's release date was recently moved to December 8 (a day Disney insists will stick), and so we'll soon find out what the world really thinks of Mel. Will you shell out ten bucks for this?
