Ben Stiller Gets His 'Greenberg' Cast
Filed under: Comedy », Drama », Casting »
These days, we've become accustomed to watching projects get oversaturated with big-name talent. Step by step, the biggies sign on until there's literally no room left on the big screen. But Noah Baumbach is switching things up with Greenberg and creating a pretty fresh cast of big-name talent, mumblecore, newbies, and international flavor.Variety reports that Brie Larson, Rhys Ifans, and Juno Temple are joining Ben Stiller and Greta Gerwig in the upcoming dramedy. The Baumbach story focuses on a New Yorker (Stiller) who moves to LA to figure out his life while housesitting for his brother, and ends up getting involved with his brother's assistant (Gerwig). Ifans will play Stiller's best friend, who is going through a divorce, while Larson will provide herself as "college-age temptation," and Temple plays her friend.
I'm thinking we've finally got someone to give Ellen Page a run for her money. These days, young talent that doesn't take the mainstream path is hard to find, but Larson is picking a pretty interesting mix of projects thus far -- including her television time as Toni Collette's daughter on United States of Tara. Mix that with Ben Stiller getting back to dramedy, and how can you go wrong?
Pilgrim's Progress: Superman & Many More Join the Cast

Edgar Wright's upcoming Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is a veritable puupuu platter of young talent. Some are super-recognizable -- like Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Chris Evans, and Kieran Culkin. And some are new Canadian talent thrown into the mix, like Ellen Wong. Since Mr. Pilgrim is a Canadian slacker and ex-boyfriend-slayer, we're getting a little more maple leaf talent, more recognizable faces, and a superhero to boot. The Hollywood Reporter posts that Brandon Routh has signed on to play Ramona's evil ex #3, Todd Ingram -- the rocker with vegan psychic powers, and Brie Larson (who is currently playing the struggling daughter in United States of Tara) will play Pilgrim's ex, Envy Adams. But that's only the beginning. Alison Pill (who kicked butt in Dear Wendy, and more recently served under Milk) will play the drummer in Pilgrim's band, while her Wendy co-star Mark Webber will play Stephen Stills, another bandmate. But that's not even the best reunion.
Ann Veal strikes again! Oh yes -- Mae Whitman, who played George Michael's crazy paramour on Arrested Development will play ex #4 -- the half-ninja Roxy Richter. And wrapping up the pack --- Anna Kendrick will play Pilgrim's sister, Johnny Simmons will play Young Neil, and Satya Bhabha will play "an ex-boyfriend who can summon demon hipster girls at will."
I wonder if other Can-con will follow ... Maybe some swashbuckling with Violet Miranda, or activism with Flyboy Action Figure Comes with Gasmask? Either way, I'm sold on Pilgrim. How about you?
If You Don't Make it on UPN, You Can Always Go Indie

Never say die! Back when UPN was still around, there was a pilot idea cooking up called Tanner Hall -- which is not about the skiier of the same name. It never got made, but instead of accepting defeat, The Hollywood Reporter has posted that it's now finding life as an indie film. The project is the brainchild of famous offspring Tatiana von Furstenberg and Francesca Gregorini -- the former is the daughter of Diane von Furstenberg, and the latter is the step-daughter of Ringo Starr. While the pair were studying at Brown, they created a pilot describing their experiences at boarding schools -- but the idea fell when UPN and WB merged.Undeterred, they reworked their idea into a feature film, which they are now co-directing in Rhode Island. And they've put together a pretty interesting cast as well. On the adult side of things, Tanner Hall stars Amy Sedaris (Strangers with Candy), Tom Everett Scott (Because I Said So), and believe it or not, the Roxbury dancing Chris Kattan. On the kid side of things, there is Tricia Mara, who had a brief role on Urban Legends: Bloody Mary, Brie Larson (Sleepover), Georgia King, who is also in Emma Roberts' upcoming boarding school flick Wild Child, Amy Ferguson, who played the saucy, high girl hitting on Zach Braff in Garden State, and a little burgeoning testosterone with Shawn Pyfrom (Desperate Housewives). This is a coming-of-age story that has the four girls navigating "adolescence while the adults in their world -- the parents and teacher -- struggle with their on midlife hurdles." Ah, the singing slap of the "midlife" designation. Now who will Kattan be? My bet is on a weird gym teacher/dance coach.
