Indie Roundup: 'Sweetgrass,' 'Clarkworld,' 'Broken Embraces'

Indie Roundup gathers a selection of indie film news from the past seven days and offers a peek ahead to what's coming.
Deal. Do not despair that the first month of the new year will be filled solely with the expansion of award contenders. Distribution rights in the US for Sweetgrass have been acquired by The Cinema Guild, according to indieWIRE, and the documentary will open at Film Forum in Manhattan on January 6, followed by a rollout across the country.
Directed by Ilisa Barbasch and Lucien Castaing-Taylor, Sweetgrass "follows the last sheepherders to trail their flocks up into Montana's Beartooth mountains for summer pasture," per its official synopsis. After debuting at the Berlin Film Festival last year, the doc played the festival circuit quite successfully, picking up positive critical notices. Online / On-Demand Viewing. Debuting on demand next Sunday, Clarkworld paints a portrait of filmmaker Bob Clark. Best known for his perennial holiday favorite A Christmas Story, Clark also made the groundbreaking Porky's, which set the tone for all raunchy teen comedies to come, and the significant slasher pic Black Christmas, another flick that was a trendsetter (or at least ripped off at will). Director Deren P. Abram talked with Peter Billingsley (former child star turned filmmaker), Kim Cattrall, Jon Voight, Denise Richards, Mary Steenburgen, John Saxon, Scott Baio, and other people who weren't even in any of his movies! Trailer Park: Broken Toys, Serious Embraces

Toy Story 3
Full length trailer for the Disney/Pixar sequel in which Andy goes off to college leaving Woody, Buzz and the gang to be donated to a daycare center. Looks like a worthy successor to the franchise. The toys start getting real again on June 18.
Serious Moonlight
In sort of a romantic comedy take on Misery, Meg Ryan plays a woman who duct tapes her cheating husband (Timothy Hutton) to the toilet and refuses to release him until he loves her again. Could be a cute idea but it's got a "wait for the DVD" feel. Watch for this one on December 4.
Dear John
Channing Tatum plays a soldier home on leave who falls in love with a college student (Amanda Seyfried) and carries on a long correspondence (hence the title) once he returns to duty. This is out on February 5.
The Missing Person
Filmnoir about a PI hired to tale a man who we eventually learn supposedly died on 9/11. I love the retro look and style of this one which will be out some time in 2009.
Broken Embraces
The synopsis for this one sounds intriguing -- a man chooses to ignore the life he lived before the accident that caused his blindness and killed his beloved -- but I don't see any of that in the trailer. On the plus side, Penelope Cruz is as stunning as ever. This will be playing New York on November 20 and Los Angeles on December 11.

The uproar about Lars Von Trier's Antichrist spurred interest even higher for attendees who wanted to decide the film's merits for themselves. (For one thing, rumor is circulating that the Cannes version will never be seen again. For another, Mick Jagger hated it, calling it "horrible.") During this morning's screening, however, the "projector broke thirty seconds in," says Todd Brown at Twitch, and this afternoon's was "shut down by a major power outage." His conclusion? "God hates Lars."
Robert Pattinson flew in from filming New Moon in Canada and posed on the beach. He confirmed that the fourth film in the Twilight saga, based on Breaking Dawn, will be made as soon as possible. Penelope Cruz suffered food poisoning last night, but recovered sufficiently to promote the new Almodovar flick (see below). She's also talking about her upcoming musical Nine.
Key Screenings. Competition: Pedro Almodovar's Broken Embraces (a writer / director grieves for his lost love), Marco Bellocchio's Vincere (Mussolini's secret wife and son). Un Certain Regard: Tales From the Golden Age (urban myths of ordinary people during the Communist era in Romania), Denis Dercourt's Tomorrow at Dawn (one brother tries to save another who is lost in his addiction to historical battles). Directors' Fortnight: Cherien Dabis' Amerrika (Palestinians try to find their place after emigrating to America). Special Screenings: the Dardenne Brothers' Lecon de Cinema.
Films Sold. IFC Films picked up Francois Ozon's "fantastical thriller" Ricky and plans a 2010 release, according to indieWIRE. The flick follows a "unique little boy and the struggles of a working-class single parent in contemporary France." Oscilloscope Pictures will re-release Jules Dassin's 1959 drama The Law in theaters later this year. Check the description at indieWIRE.
