Michael Bay on 'Transformers 3': Less Action, More Emotion
Filed under: Action », Sci-Fi & Fantasy », Paramount », RumorMonger », Fandom », DIY/Filmmaking », Home Entertainment », Remakes and Sequels », Trailers and Clips »

I didn't think it was possible for any movie to be too big for Michael Bay, especially not a Transformers movie. But judging from this candid DVD extra, even Bay thinks Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen veered on excessive, and he's promising to scale back when he tackles #3. As we speak, Bay is combing through the Transformers lore that Hasbro has sent him and pondering who or what will be smashing crap up in another installment. Just the way he says "Transformers lore" makes me want a story centered on Bay exploring ancient catacombs to uncover the missing Transformers arcana with Megan Fox as his sidekick. (She'll be packing a Ph.D in Hasbro lore because she's not afraid to be smart and sexy.)
As Bay ponders how to go sideways from Revenge (his words, not mine), he does have a few ideas in mind. He wants more Bumblebee, and to explore the powerful relationship he has with Sam. He wants more characters, and more emotion. He wants it to be "more undercover" and "less exposed" which might be difficult for our transforming pals when they destroyed the Great Pyramid of Giza.
At the end of the video, Bay decides to abandon plot ideas and offer a cash reward. Then he says "Just joking!" because come on, the man has to eat, and Fallen didn't make a kajillion dollars, just a few hundred million. However, maybe a few of you more skilled in Transformers lore than he is can make use of the address, and write him with what you want to see in #3.

Bumblebee Actor Teases Possible 'Transformers' Prequel

I'd say at this point it's pretty obvious we're going to get some sort of Transformers sequel within the next couple years. Fans went absolutely nuts for the film when it arrived last week, and director Michael Bay has already said he knows exactly where he wants the story to go. Ah, but Bay isn't the only one talking. Mark Ryan, who voices Bumblebee in the film, sat down to talk to the folks over at SKNR about all kinds of things, including his voice work on this film as well as his involvement in another one. When asked if he had heard anything about a sequel, Ryan said: "I recently recorded more material for the DVD release of the film. It has to do with the Prequel that will set up the second film."
The prequel that will set up the second film? What could he be talking about? Will there be some sort of Transformers prequel on the DVD? Will it be live action? Will it be animated? Perhaps Bay and Co. have plans to release something along the lines of The Animatrix; an animated short(s) featuring some of the same voices from the film that will be used as a bridge to the sequel. Regarding that sequel, Bay told Entertainment Weekly that, if he is going to make it, he'll probably shoot a smaller film first (the one about a bunch of guys who hang out at a gym). He added: "There's a lot of really cool, big robot stuff that I had in my head that we didn't do. I just want to see how this works. You might not grow as much as a director [to do a sequel]. But it's kind of like you have your baby and you don't want someone else to take it.." I guess we'll have to wait until the DVD is released for Ryan's answer to make a little more sense. Thoughts?
'Transformers' Bumblebee For Sale on eBay

You could wait awhile and just buy a new 2009 Bumblebee Camaro, or you can try to find a nice vintage 1977 Camaro. But wouldn't you rather have the actual '77 model featured in Transformers? If you have a lot of cash and an immense love for the new Michael Bay movie, then head over to Ebay, where the car featured onscreen is up for auction. Now, I'm sure you understand that this car will not transform into Bumblebee or anything else, but at least it apparently does have the Autobots logo on the steering wheel. It also seems to be in good working condition, in case you want to actually drive it rather than display it in your own personal Transformers museum.
To get involved in the auction, you have to be pre-approved by the seller, so too bad for you if you wanted to be a jerk and place a false bid. As of this writing, the price is only up to $24,300.00. Of course, there's still more than six days left, so don't think it's a steal just yet. And if you want the same license plate used on the car or in the movie, that will cost you more (currently over $1,000); items from inside the car, including the air freshener and disco ball, will cost you even more (currently $3,550). In Transformers, the car is bought by Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf) and then turns out to be the transforming robot alien Bumblebee. Later in the movie, Bumblebee upgrades to the new 2009 model. The later vehicle is not available, probably because the model isn't available yet to the public. The license plate from that car is up on Ebay, though. Other Transformers auctions include costumes and accessories worn by the cast.
GM Unveils a Transformers Line Of Cars?

The already-hyped Transformers flick received another shot of free press this week when the cars that GM licensed for the film showcased at the GM "ten" pre-Oscar fashion event at Paramount Pictures. IESB.net has exclusive video of the cars on the "red carpet" and already speculation has begun that GM could bring a "Transformers Edition" of cars into production. Mike Jackson, GM North America Vice President, marketing and advertising, notes, "Transformers is a compelling project and offers us a global platform for marketing GM products and building our brands, it represents the perfect intersection of entertainment, marketing and design." Most of the attention directed at the cars in the film has been the switch for Bumblebee from a VW Bug into a brand new classic Camaro. Fans are already a little miffed at the change; I'm not exactly the biggest Transformers aficionado, but even I thought it should have been a Volkswagen, regardless of what high-profile marketing agreements were in place. Other GM products in the film include a Pontiac Solstice (Jazz), Hummer H2 (Ratchet and a GMC TopKick (Ironhide). Since these cars are already on their way to the marketplace, I would assume any Transformer edition would pretty much be the same car but with an Autobot or Decepticon logo on the back. So it's not exactly groundbreaking design, but could fans resist the lure of driving around in their very own Transformer?
Bumblebee Takes a Breather

You've got to hand it to Ain't It Cool News -- they've been all over the Transformers photo action these past few weeks. Among the most popular (photograph-wise, anyway) of the robots in disguise has been Bumblebee, and the good folks over at AICN have turned up yet another picture of the big bot. This one comes courtesy of some folks over at the SuperheroHype boards, and shows a reclined Bumblebee (the physical model, not a CGI version) waiting to be carted around set. You can dig the picture here, and while you're at it, you can scope a cute little cardboard street "mock-up" designed to give some idea of the size scale between the various Transformers. As I began to write this post -- I kid you not, that very moment, I received an IM from my buddy John who said the following: "feeling like I want to gouge out my eyes. I just saw concept art for The Transformers movie." Now John is openly "old-school," and his opinions are thus influenced, but the man accurately summed up the opinions of a large portion of the geek community. As one AICN talkbacker wisely put it, "I know Bumblebee, and you, sir, are no Bumblebee."
Bumblebee Up Close

Ready for your latest dose of Transformers images? Yes, we've got yet more to show you from the Michael Bay movie -- but don't worry, you don't have to look if you don't want to. Here are the two big items for today:A close up look at an actual Transformer -- Bumblebee to be precise. The tipster who sent this in to AICN says he can't be 100% certain of authenticity, but he has no reason to believe otherwise. He credits the image to the Allspark.com forums. Like the style or not, it is a good shot and gives a decent look at a non-CGI Transformer face.
Additionally, you can catch some fan-shot footage of Jazz and Ratchet in their vehicle forms over here. Honestly, this is just a one minute clip of a sportscar and a Hummer making a few turns at under 25 miles an hour. But they are vehicles which will presumably turn into giant robots at some point, so it's sorta cool if you think of it like that. As much as I typically make fun of how Hummers look on the road (sorry to all the Hummer owners out there), I suppose it makes sense for a Transformer. The thing practically looks like a giant robot already.
Megatron Revealed!

After Michael Bay and his gang of merry studio lawyers spent some time desperately battling internet fanboys hell-bent on leaking any and all Transformers information, it now seems they've let their guard down and are giving the fans what they want.
Last week, writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci sat down for a live webcast and revealed the names of all robots included in next summer's blockbuster films. And, shortly after the webcast, a slew of robot pics hit the net, including images of Bumblebee, as well as supposed toy prototypes for Optimus Prime, Blackout and Scorponok. However, missing in action was the film's number one bad guy, Megatron. Well, the good folks over at AICN have just gotten their hands on some wicked photos of Megatron and, well, I think they speak for themselves. Regardless of whether this will be the final look for Megatron, it certainly seems Bay and Co. are heading in the right direction. Thoughts?
Holy Transformers Teaser!

Look, stuff leaks online all the time and, for awhile, it's a whole lot of fun. That is, until Daddy (insert studio name here) comes along and ruins the party. Right now, you're totally expecting me to follow up that sentence with a link taking you to the leaked teaser for Michael Bay's live-action version of Transformers. I know that's what you want. However, I'd like you to beg for it. Seriously, I'm having a bad day -- please humor me here.
Don't feel like begging -- fine. Instead, I'll just point you in the direction of the teaser's description, complete with a few screen-shots of the thing itself. Seeing as the words, "Property of Paramount Pictures" grace the bottom of each image, I think it's safe to say these aren't supposed to be seen ... yet. And, since we here at Cinematical like to play by the rules (when we're sober), the best I can do is show you the way.
If the teaser's description doesn't satisfy you, then perhaps the gigantic picture of Bumblebee will. Awhile back, Mark told us how a guy with the handle of Handz 510 caught a glimpse of Bumblebee and said the robot (an actual physical Transformer, not CGI created) looked awesome. Well folks, see for yourself -- the thing does look pretty friggin' sweet. I imagine this won't last too long, Paramount has already begun sweeping the internet in search of people not like us. Ya know, because we're good like that. Wink. Wink.
Transformers Update - Bumblebee Looks "Awesome"

Superhero Hype has some scooper news from an extra appearing in Michael Bay's upcoming live-action Transformers flick. A guy who goes by the handle of Handz 510 managed to score some character (humans only, no robots) and set photos which you can dig here -- they are nothing amazing but they're fun to check out. They mostly center around the Even Stevens kid and a few others standing against a dull background. More importantly, the scooper had some things to say about an early look at an actual Transformer.SMALL SPOILER WARNING. READ NO FURTHER IF YOU WANT TO AVOID MINOR PLOT DETAILS.
Here's the deal. For one particular sequence, we learn that Bumblebee has been captured by the U.S. military in an area called "Sector 7." Our scooper has some buddies who got to extra in those scenes, and they saw the actual, assembled Bumblebee -- one of the very few scenes which will use a physical Transformer instead of CGI. According to these reports, Bumblebee looks "Awesome!" It may not be much yet ... but it's a good start to the robot news!
