Why Go to the 'Dollhouse' When You Have a 'Cabin in the Woods'?
Filed under: Horror », Casting »
Joss Whedon is basically a God amongst geeks, and a breath of fresh air to female-centric media. But this whole Dollhouse thing has got us in limbo, as much as it hurts my fangirl heart to say. Can it find the magic of Buffy? Can Eliza hold her own as a woman of many faces? When will we see more Acker? I know I'm not alone in my trepidation over the new show, but now I'm wondering if all the magic is just being funneled into The Cabin in the Woods. The Hollywood Reporter posts that Cabin, which is now shooting, has its horror playmates: Kristen Connolly, Chris Hemsworth, Anna Hutchinson, Fran Kranz, and Jesse Williams. These guys might come from gigs like Star Trek and Revolutionary Road, but they're relative newcomers to the scene. (Although Kranz is already part of the Whedonverse -- he plays Topher on Dollhouse.) Joss says: "Each of the 'kids' is unique, fascinating and talented, and like true friends, the group is more than the sum of its parts. These are people you care about, able to go toe to toe with the amazing actors we've corralled thus far, and not unpretty in the bargain. I can't wait to harm them."
I'm getting a Buffy feeling about all of this. It could be just desperate hope, but Whedon has proved to have an eye for new talent, whether it be on the vampire or cowboy space stage. And with Drew, it's like the magic of Sunnydale all over again -- the man with the vision teamed with the man who brought us "Conversations with Dead People."
It just sucks that we can't get scared this Halloween -- Cabin has been bumped to a romantic, February 5, 2010 horror date.

The Scary Bits: Raimi's Return, Jason's Resurrection & Some New 'Thing'

So after years of wondering and months of alleged deals, it finally looks like Universal is dusting something off for a remake. SomeTHING I should say, so if you're a fan of Christian Nyby's The Thing (From Another World), John Carpenter's The Thing, or John Campbell's source material Who Goes There?, then you should be suitably elated to learn that Universal has tapped a writer and a director for the new-fangled version. Me, I'm fine with it. But if you come into my house and mess with my The Thing DVD, I may have to cut you. (More from Pete right here.)
Sam Raimi's long-awaited return to horror is called Drag Me to Hell, and while I won't get to see it for a few more weeks (sadface), the early buzz from the L.A. horror hounds is nothing but enthusiastic. I refuse to read ANYthing about this movie, but you can click around Bloody, Shock, and Dread to see what those gorehounds thought.
Oooh, next week we get a bunch of new Friday the 13th DVDs! (I wonder why.) Check out my little report on those platters right here. Directly opposite of next week we have last week, which is when we saw a few new horror flicks at Sundance. Those films were Grace (Snider's review / mine at FEARnet), The Killing Room (mine), and Dead Snow (Snider's / mine), and while it's not horror at all, Moon is just damn cool enough to warrant another mention. Here's James' review and here's mine. (It's old-school science fiction, in that it's about ideas AND technology. How very cool.)
Random bits on: Joss Whedon's Cabin in the Woods; that remake of The Crazies; the availability of the awesome [REC] on R1 DVD; and our multiple affectons for Sean Ellis' The Broken. (Ooh, the Martyrs DVD cover!)

I never would have thought I would see the day that moviegoers and critics would praise the heck out of Jean Claude Van Damme -- unless they were all in the midst of a discussion about awesome crappy martial arts movies from the '80s. But the critical praise has finally come with his work in J.C.V.D. which means that the sucker has to hit screens soon so the rest of us can see what the fuss is about. According to AOL Money, Peace Arch Entertainment bought all the North American rights to the film, with plans to release it shortly after it screens at TIFF. Okay, so the exact date is not set, but the wait for Jean Claude's latest could be as short as a month. Stay tuned! (We'll have a review and mayyybe an interview with the man himself later next month.)Meanwhile, Cabin in the Woods, which started whipping up buzz back in July, is going to make us wait a little longer. Ace Showbiz reports that MGM has scheduled Drew Goddard's film for an October 23, 2009 release. That'll slide it into theaters a week before Saw VI. Now this is assuming that the production goes according to schedule -- it hasn't started yet and there hasn't been any big casting announcements.
So What's Coming Soon from Joss Whedon?

Cabin in the woods, ooooh. A cabin in the woods (yeah). I don't know if it'll be about five college students on their way to an old, abandoned cabin in the woods, but there's a project on Joss Whedon's plate that isn't Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog or Dollhouse. In a discussion with MTV, the uber-awesome Buffy creator talked about the projects that are coming to fruition, and those that are falling to the weight of busy schedules. We already know about the awesome Dr. Horrible, and the sing-along commentary, but what else is there? Cabin in the Woods. While this may seem more like Sam Raimi territory, it's actually a project being cooked up between Whedon and Buffy writer and Cloverfield scribe Drew Goddard. The latter says: "It's got a harder and darker edge, but it's also got classic Whedon qualities. It'll rip your heart out and be heartfelt at the same time." He wouldn't say what it's about other than how it'll be their take on the horror-filled cabin experience. Right now, Whedon says that they're working out budgeting, and hopefully it'll be figured out soon. Considering the depth he brought to the vampire slayer, I can only imagine...
However, if you were hoping to see Joss involved in Brian K. Vaughan's Runaways production, dream on. Whedon already has "guilt" over his busy-ness and lack of involvement in the project. He's also got Serving Girl, a short he planned with Summer Glau, on the back burner because he's got his gigs lined up while Glau is "busy terminating everybody."
"I'm only one man!" he cried to MTV. That may be the case, but he's a man while awesome-sounding projects on the way.
