Hugh Jackman Gets 'Carousel,' 'Security,' and 'Wolverine' Sequel

The disappointment of X-Men Origins: Wolverine may actually have been worth it if its $85 million debut gives Hugh Jackman the industry cred he's always seemed to lack. It's difficult to believe such a perfect guy isn't considered A-List, but even as recently as Australia, Fox was still trying to sell him as an A Manly Actor You Could Cast In Stuff. Well, Australia didn't convince anyone (though I think he was the one of the standouts of the film), but apparently Wolverine did. According to Variety Jackman is just lining up projects right and left, all under his Seed Productions banner that he shares with his wife, Deborra-Lee Furness and producer John Palermo. Yesterday's Ghostopolis was just the tip of the iceberg. Now he's actively planning Wolverine's Japan sequel for Fox. The studio has also bought Matt Lieberman's spec script Personal Security for him. Jackman will play a "tough Gotham police detective" forced to play bodyguard to a spoiled heiress. Sounds fluffy, but Jackman really does do comedy well, so it could be fun.
Yes, it Was Inevitable: Jackman in Carousel

Given the combination of Hugh Jackman's stardom and his musical/stage background, it was only a matter of time before Hollywood mixed him into its new, we're-less-scared-of-musicals-now trend. Though the actor actually has a deal with Disney to develop musicals for the screen, his first singin' and dancin' appearance in Hollywood will apparently be for Fox 2000, which has struck a deal with Jackman to star in a remake of the Rodgers and Hammerstein classic, Carousel. (Fox already owns the rights to the original film, so getting the remake going shouldn't be a problem -- assuming they get the OK for the music.) According to Variety, Wolverine will play Billy Bigelow (a role originated on-screen by Gordon MacRae), the grumpy carnival barker who ends up dead because of his temper. Luckily, however, he's allowed "to return [for a day] and fix the problems he left behind -- namely a teenager who has a lot of his rebellious traits."I'm a fan of both Jackman (I own Swordfish. AND Someone Like You. Shhh.) and musicals, but for some reason I just cannot stomach Carousel -- I hate all the characters, and find the story incredibly tiresome. Clearly, I'm a bad person. Still, though, I do wonder if Jackman's star power will be enough to bring audiences to this one.
Chloe Sevigny loves diamonds

I'm sure Chloë Sevigny had a very good reason for
agreeing to star in Carousel, a advertising film for Ritz Fine Jewelery that runs over six minutes and
consists mostly of her lolling around hotels rooms in various costumes and wigs. A desperate love for Ritz products,
for example. Or a desire to stretch herself as an actress in a way that doesn't involve Vincent Gallo. Or, more likely, cold, hard cash. While a Bande à part reference is always welcome no matter how cheap and obvious it is, the short as a whole is just painfully boring - though I suppose it would be even more so were the face pouting in the middle of it a slightly less familiar one. But really, is anyone going to watch the movie and be seized by a need to buy diamonds from Ritz, thus repaying whatever it cost the company to get Sevigny to appear? I'm thinking no.
