Borrowed 'Sex' Scenes

Filed under: Comedy », Drama », New Releases », RumorMonger », Celebrities and Controversy »

Since Sex and the City has screened around the world and critics have weighed in, it's time for a little nitpicking -- and nobody seems more up to the task than that unflagging beacon of urban gossip, Page Six. Today, the New York Post column reports that New Line Cinema and Radio City Music Hall are facing off in a blame-fest following the mistake that lead to 1,000 ticket holders getting turned away at the New York City premiere. At the close of the piece, however, the article gets into some of the details of the plot: "Those who've seen Sex and the City are buzzing that its story owes much to widely reported episodes involving Jonathan Tisch and Ellen Barkin," it reads, and that's just one of the alleged rip-offs. There's also a supposed reference to Tisch's canceled engagement to Jill Swid, and a "scene where Carrie freaks out about having a 347 area code seems just like one in an old Seinfeld episode."

Not having seen the movie, I can only judge from afar, but this sounds like two very separate complaints. That Sex and the City would use real life incidents to inspire its metropolitan plot shouldn't bother anyone (except the real life inspirations, of course). But borrowing from Seinfeld? Now that's a low blow.

Sarah Jessica Parker Joins 'The Late Bloomer's Revolution'

Filed under: Comedy », Romance », Casting », HBO Films »

Before I go any further, I should probably get this off my chest. I never liked Sex in The City; there, I said it. I know there are millions of you out there with plenty of valid reasons as to why it was the greatest show ever -- but those four chicks just got on my nerves. Which is a shame considering how much I like Sarah Jessica Parker -- anyone who starred in Footloose and Square Pegs can't be all bad.

Variety reports that Parker will star in The Late Bloomer's Revolution. Based on Amy Cohen's memoir of the same name, the film will follow a "single woman who, after the death of her mother, develops a bond with her father as they both try to get on with their lives in the dating world." It's a character remarkably similar to Carrie Bradshaw, and the book was described as having a "much deeper masochistic streak than Sex and the City, even if she copes with setbacks like a virulent face rash with as much self-deprecating humor as she can muster."

Revolution will be the feature directorial debut of Amy Sherman-Palladino, creator of The Gilmore Girls and executive producer of the upcoming Parker Posey comedy series, The Return of Jezebel James. All eyes are still on Sex and The City though, and between rumors of fake flashbacks and pregnancies the production is under some serious scrutiny right now. Parker (Sarah, not Posey) seems to be firmly entrenched in the romantic comedy camp, and has also been attached to A Family Affair, about a woman who accidentally has an affair with her future father in law. Now that's someone who sounds like they could use advice from someone like Carrie Bradshaw.

A Family Affair For Parker

So, it's official: Sarah Jessica Parker has accepted her fate and will no longer be trying to escape her romantic comedy box. Sorry for confusing you, movie-goers -- from now on, she'll just be playing variations on Carrie Bradshaw. And, if A Family Affair is any indication of the quality of the stories she got in mind, it's going to get really old, really fast.

According to Variety, SJP is attached to the film, a spec script by Sahara Lotti recently picked up by New Line. Make sure you're not drinking anything, because you'll totally spit it all over your keyboard when you hear this hi-larious premise. Ready? Parker's character is a real estate agent who "has an affair with a distinguished older man. After becoming engaged to someone else and heading off to meet her fiance's family, she discovers her future father-in-law was her bedmate." Oh ho ho, that's rich! Imagine the potential! Awkwardness! Misunderstandings! Why, it's comedy gold! Or at least it was the first 7000 times it was done in movies, sitcoms, and on stage. And, maybe while we're waiting for this iteration to go into production, the storyline will be done a few more times, just to get us really primed to laugh. Yippee.
