Ken Watanabe and Tom Hardy Join Nolan's 'Inception'

Filed under: Sci-Fi & Fantasy », Thrillers », Casting », Mystery & Suspense », Warner Brothers », RumorMonger »

Here's what we currently know about Christopher Nolan's between-Batmans project, Inception:

  • It is not, as initially asserted by a commenter, concerning "a war for the colonization of Venus."

  • It is more likely along the lines of a sci-fi action film "set within the architecture of the mind" (which, coming from the brains behind The Dark Knight, The Prestige, and Memento, is a scary-thrilling thought).

  • Currently on board are Leonardo DiCaprio (as some sort of CEO), Marion Cotillard, Ellen Page, Cillian Murphy, and Michael Caine...
...and, according to THR, rounding out the ensemble (for now) are Ken "Batman Begins" Watanabe as a blackmailing villain and Tom "apparently awesome in Bronson" Hardy as a colleague of DiCaprio's.

Sorry to be Avatar-level vague, but with a cast like this and a crew like that, there's little left to do but twiddle our thumbs and hope for the best between now and next summer. Either that, or Nolan just recast most of the third Batman film and doesn't want Christian Bale to know...

Terrific Trailers: 28 Days Later

Filed under: Horror », Summer Movies », Trailers and Clips »

Maybe it's all the talk of Swine Flu flooding the airwaves that has me in a pandemic frame of mind, but when Erik asked us to think about some of our favorite summer movie trailers, my mind wandered from the obvious blockbusters and instead, I came up with Danny Boyle's 28 Days Later. Now, I've always been a staunch defender of 28 Days against what seemed to be a chorus of naysayers. Yes, I know; the theatrical ending is too upbeat (not for me, but I've got a pretty bleak outlook sometimes), it's not a proper zombie film, Cillian Murphy's 'Rambo' turn comes from left field, and the list goes on. But believe me when I tell you that there is nothing you can come up that I haven't already heard about why this film isn't all it's cracked up to be. So even though better men have tried (and failed) to convince me that this isn't some of the best work that Boyle has done, at least we can agree that it's a heck of a lot better than A Life Less Ordinary.

The international trailer for the horror had all of the trademarks of Boyle's style; great use of music, striking visuals, and it was creepy as hell. Boyle and Alex Garland's story of an infection running amok in England might not have been your typical summer release; it was shot on digital video, it had limited F/X, and the most recognizable face in the trailer was Christopher Eccleston. But, just watching this trailer again after all these years reminds me that it isn't always the splashy Hollywood productions that can turn out to be your summer's most memorable film.

Chris Nolan Nabs Juno and Others for 'Inception'

Christopher Nolan is one of those filmmakers who could make a rut or obsession seem so damned appealing. For many, it's great to branch out and not get rutted, but for Nolan ... it would be quite sweet to have a neverending onslaught of good, wow-worthy Batman films. That's not going to happen, but at least his post-bat project is becoming increasingly more interesting.

On the heels of Leonardo DiCaprio, Variety reports that Ellen Page, Marion Cotillard, and Cillian Murphy are joining the Inception. Not much more is being said about the project, but this is what we know thus far: It will be a sci-fi action movie that takes place within "the architecture of the mind," and DiCaprio will play a CEO-type, Cotillard will be married to him, and Page will be a young grad student who is also his sidekick. There's no mention of Murphy's character, so I wonder: Could this all take place within his mind?

It could take place on a napkin for all I care -- Nolan has definitely proven he's got the chops, and this cast should be interesting in the realms of science fiction. But what do you think? Is Inception intriguing you, or do you just wish Batman would answer the bat signal once again?

Exclusive Clip from 'The Edge of Love'

Filed under: Drama », Fandom », Movie Marketing », Images », Trailers and Clips »

Cinematical
has just received this exclusive clip from The Edge of Love, and while we won't spoil it for you, we will say that it features Keira Knightley and Sienna Miller rubbing, hugging and touching one another. Um, yeah. Seriously, though, The Edge of Love is quietly sneaking up on all of us with its solid ensemble cast (Knightley, Miller, Cillian Murphy and Matthew Rhys) and fascinating story somewhat based on real events surrounding poet Dylan Thomas (Rhys) and the two crazy women vying for his attention.

Poets are nuts -- and the people who fall in love with poets are even nuttier (don't look at me; I'm a blogger, not a poet). Check out the scene below, along with a whole bunch of images; The Edge of Love hits theaters in Los Angeles on March 13 and New York on March 20.

The Geek Beat: Is it the Time of the Preacher?

Well well, Reverend Jesse Custer. It looks like you might make it to the big screen after all. It's hard to get too optimistic, seeing as you've had directors, producers, and HBO dancing around you for years. In fact, no one I've talked to offline had heard of your new movie deal the way they'd heard about Tony Stark's – and when I told them that it really seemed to be happening this time, no one could muster up much enthusiasm. We're a beaten down congregation, Reverend. It will take some writers or some casting announcements to get us excited – and we may always wish you'd ended up at HBO.

I don't think you're impossible to adapt; you take a lot of digressions that I'm perfectly comfortable never seeing on screen. Your first major adventure versus Si the serial killer, for instance -- then again, without it, your horrible grandma doesn't come into play. Hmmm. Any chance Columbia's thinking about giving you a trilogy? Because not only could you digress into serial killers and hedonistic Hollywood parties to your heart's content, but it would be one heck of a franchise, and might give us The Saint of All Killers' spin-off we all want. (Can you convince them to animate it? Can you use the Word to get Clint Eastwood to narrate?)

News Bites: Singleton Ditches 'A-Team', Glover in 'Wonderland', and 'Perrier's Bounty'

You might have noticed that The A-Team news front has been pretty quiet lately. Back in March, the film got a June 12, 2009 release date, but that was it -- no cast, no news, no nothing. Now Variety reports that the film's release has been pushed back to June 2010 and that director John Singleton has left the project due to the studio wanting more rewrites on the script. I guess this gives them more time to figure out who, exactly, will make up this cast. Mr. T's pretty handy with computers, hacking into WOW and the like. Maybe he could save the day and get this beast moving forward!

When it comes to finding the right actors for a project Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland, one should look no further than Mr. Crispin Glover. And yup, The Hollywood Reporter tells us Glover has indeed signed on to play the freaky Knave of Hearts. Seeing as the film will be a cross between live action and performance-capture -- with the Wonderland stuff most likely dabbling in the latter -- it would appear Glover is heading back to familiar territory following his work in the performance-capture flick Beowulf.

Finally, a British film has scored one heck of a sweet cast. The Hollywood Reporter posts that Cillian Murphy, Jim Broadbent, and Brendan Gleeson are starring in the comedy thriller Perrier's Bounty, which focuses on "three unlikely fugitives on the run from a gangster kingpin." Unfortunately it doesn't look like these three are the exact trio (which is unfortunate). Murphy will play the lead, Broadbent will play his long-lost father, and Gleeson will play Perrier.

Discuss: One Particular 'Dark Knight' Villain???

I'm sorry for being so cryptic with the title, but I would like to save those who haven't seen The Dark Knight yet from a few of the film's big reveals. That said, if you haven't watched the movie yet, I'd suggest not reading this post. Unless you don't care either way, here we go ... spoilers ahead ...

On the phone with Cinematical's Scott Weinberg last night discussing which jewelry we're bringing to Comic Con (I have the perfect, purtiest necklace for the Terminator: Salvation panel!), we got to talking about The Dark Knight. More specifically, we pondered Scarecrow's purpose in this film. Why was he there? Why bring Cillian Murphy on set for one scene with very little to do and then not come back to him for the remainder of the flick?

Now, the purpose of the scene itself was pretty clear: To re-establish Batman's war on crime and to show how the hero's popularity has spawned a number of copycat Batmans. So they bring these two drug gangs together for a secret meeting/transaction, and one of them is run by Scarecrow. And just as business is about to go down, a bunch of Batmans arrive on the scene -- all hell breaks loose -- and the real Batman eventually gets the job done.

Great. Wonderful. So why was Scarecrow there again?

Trailer for Keira Knightley's 'The Edge of Love'

Filed under: Drama », Movie Marketing », Trailers and Clips »

Let it be known that little live but lies,
Love-lies, and god-lies, and lies-to-please.
Dylan Thomas

Back in 2006, I couldn't say that I was itching to see The Edge of Love, which was then titled The Best Time of Our Lives. Keira Knightley was attached to star, which wasn't surprising since her mom wrote the script, but Lindsay Lohan was attached to co-star. LiLo was already getting into tabloid trouble and it seemed like a slap in the face to Dylan Thomas fans, and a moment of insanity within the casting powers that be. Luckily, she dropped out, and Sienna Miller stepped in.

Now, finally, we've got a trailer. I could do without the first pointless closeup of Keira's face, but the trailer soon goes through the basics of the story, and it's looking like a sweet literary drama. Edge focuses on the love triangle between Caitlin (Miller) and Dylan Thomas (Matthew Rhys) and friend Vera Phillips (Knightley), and how this led Vera's husband, William Killick (Cillian Murphy), to open fire on the Thomas home with a machine gun and hand grenade in retaliation. Normally, I get a bit perturbed about literary dramas that focus on the romance rather than the writer, but this is a strange story, and it looks like it was captured well for the big screen.

I'd be remiss to not mention that this certainly has Atonement similarities (although one quote in the movie says that this flick is better!), but as a Thomas fan, I'm hoping it can shine in its own light.

The Edge of Love currently has no US release date, but is scheduled to arrive in the UK at the end of June.

First Pic of Aaron Eckhart as Two Face!

Filed under: Action », Fandom », Movie Marketing », Comic/Superhero/Geek », Remakes and Sequels », Images »

Okay, so it's not exactly a photo of Aaron Eckhart from the actual movie, but it is a blurry photo (click on the image for a larger version) of the new Two Face action figure recently showcased at a restricted press event during the New York Toy Fair. Of course, throw up the word 'restricted' and there's bound to be at least one dude with a hidden camera phone. Dark Horizons nabbed the photos, which are indeed fuzzy, but enough to make out what the character will look like. This also means that, yes, Eckhart will most definitely make his transformation in The Dark Knight from Harvey Dent to the villainous Two Face. But when he does it, and for how long he's on screen, we do not know.

Some have suggested that Two Face will make an appearance at the very end of the film, for one or two scenes, as a teaser into the third installment. Seeing as it's been confirmed that Scarecrow (Cillian Murphy) and Joker (Heath Ledger) will both be included in the film, it's my hope that this is the way they go. Last thing we want is a rushed Two Face storyline; I'd rather more focus on the Joker and for Two Face to team up with another Gotham baddie in the third installment. What do you think?

The Dark Knight hits theaters on July 18.

Ellen Page Finally Becomes a Mom

For those who were kinda bummed out after they didn't get to see Ellen Page be a real mom in Juno, you'll be glad to know that she's signed on to star as a young mother in the new psychological thriller Peacock for Mandate Pictures. Variety tells us Page will join Cillian Murphy in the film, and this one has nutty written all over it. Here's the description: "The title is derived from tiny Peacock, Neb., where Murphy's character, a split personality, fools the town into believing his two alter egos are man and wife. Page plays a struggling young mother who holds the key to his past and sparks a battle between the personalities." WTF? I mean, Murphy's taken on some f**ked up characters in his day, but this one has to take the cake. Yeah, I'd go see this, like, now if I could.

Newbie Michael Lander will direct off a script he co-wrote with Ryan Roy, and production will begin this May. Peacock marks the third film Ellen Page has signed onto in the last month; she'll first shoot Sam Raimi's Drag Me to Hell, then Peacock, and then take on the starring role in Drew Barrymore's directorial debut, Whip It. Meanwhile, Cillian Murphy will do his best to practice playing both a man and a wife. On the role, he says, "Peacock stunned me as a script from start to finish. It offers an incredible challenge to an actor -- one I couldn't turn down." Come to think of it, Murphy does have a feminine quality about him, and so I can totally see him making this believable (heck, he's already played a transvestite cabaret dancer); to the point where an entire town would be convinced there were two separate people living under the same roof. But will he convince us? I guess we'll see when Peacock hits theaters at some point in the next year.
