What of Anne Hathaway's Missing 'Passengers'?

Filed under: Thrillers », Mystery & Suspense », Sony », RumorMonger », Distribution », Trailers and Clips », Posters »

For quite some time, the supernatural thriller Passengers -- starring Anne Hathaway as a grief counselor working with survivors of a plane crash (among them, Patrick Wilson) who begin to vanish -- had been quietly set on opening this Friday, September 5th.

However, as the date neared without any sign of a poster, a trailer, anything, I began rooting around the IMDb message boards and was about to post a Spanish-language trailer, complete with accompanying amateur translation, when along came a legit trailer (by way of Reelz Channel), a real poster (courtesy of IMP Awards), and a new date of October... well, just October for now.

Given his knack for ensemble dramas such as Nine Lives and Things You Can Tell Just By Looking at Her, director Rodrigo Garcia seems to be a curious pick for the material, as the focus is less on what's happened to the group as a whole and more on Hathaway and Wilson investigating one another. Otherwise, the vibe I'm getting here is the one I had from 2004's The Forgotten: it has just enough of a hook to get me to watch it, but I doubt that the pay-off will live up to it.

What do you guys think? Will September's Lakeview Terrace and October's Rachel Getting Married satisfy your Wilson and Hathaway jones, respectively? And facing this Halloween's mainstream horror fare, is Sony, under the Tri-Star banner, about to dump this in a limited amount of theaters as they had with, say, Wind Chill, which just happened to star Prada pal Emily Blunt?

IFC Grabs 'Anamorph'

Ah, serial killer movies -- always becoming more and more convoluted by the second. It seems like every film has to have the worst killer ever known to man, or the most bizarre motivation, to keep the audiences interested. The Hollywood Reporter announced that IFC has picked up the rights to the crime thriller Anamorph. The film stars Scott Speedman (Underworld or Felicity, depending on your age group) and Willem Dafoe, and centers on a bizarre and vicious killer who re-creates anamorphic paintings in his crime scenes. After a quick Wikipedia search, I discovered that anamorphic painting is a style that uses a "distorted projection or perspective requiring the viewer to use special devices or occupy a specific vantage point to reconstitute the image." So, if our killer is using this technique in his crime scenes, I can only imagine how freaky some of it might get.

The film was written and directed by Henry Miller, who has only worked on a few comedy shorts up until now; Anamorph will be his first full-length feature film. Joining Speedman and Defoe in the cast are Peter Stormare as an art gallery owner and Clea DuVall (Heroes) as a troubled girl put in danger by the killer -- what were you expecting? She might as well be listed as bait/love interest in the credits. It looks like the film was originally set for release in 2007, but they didn't quite make it. Speedman has wrapped up two films since finishing Anamorph, just to give you an idea. But, I guess the old adage of better late than never is still in full effect, and the film is scheduled for release this November.

Anamorph casts up

For its first feature, Kamala Films has selected Anamorph, a thriller with a plot that sounds pretty much like one of any 12 episodes of SVU, except with a killer instead of a rapist (which, I hasten to add, is not necessarily a bad thing). The movie is about a detective who, after five years away from the job, returns with the requisite rookie partner only to find that a serial killer with whom he was once obsessed may be back in action. Willem Dafoe will be on hand to make the detective the creepiest man in the movie, and Scott Speedman - Felicity's favorite vampire-werewolf hybrid - has just signed on to play his partner. Also recently added to the cast were Peter Stormare (as an art gallery owner) and Clea DuVall, who will play the (also requisite) troubled woman befriended by DeFoe's character.

The movie, which has a fairly small budget of less than $15 million, is currently filming in New York and hopes to finish principle photography by the end of March.

MGM Picks Up Two Weeks

While I think most people think of drama when they think of Sally Field, I always thought that she could of done some really great comedies. I just don't think she ever managed to choose the right ones. It might not have been a perfect movie, but she was absolutely hilarious in Soapdish as a highly-strung soap star. Sure, I liked Norma Rae, but most of Fields' "heavy" roles always grated on my nerves just a little -- a good example would be her work on ER, it's just too much crying, too much yelling, just too much of everything. It looks like I will have to wait for that great Sally Field comedy project, because her next film sounds pretty light on the laughs.

Variety reported that MGM purchased the international rights to the film Two Weeks starring Field, Ben Chaplin (The Thin Red Line), and Tom Cavanagh (Scrubs). Rounding out the rest of the cast is Julianne Nicholson, Glenn Howerton, and Clea DuVall. The film follows four siblings who rush home to see their terminally ill mother for the last time, but end up having to wait around for the inevitable for the next two weeks. Steve Stockman who is at the helm as a first time director also wrote the script. Two Weeks is set for release this December.
