Review: Young At Heart

Filed under: Documentary », Music & Musicals », Theatrical Reviews », Fox Searchlight »

Young @ Heart begins with a vast crowd on their feet, cheering a performance we haven't seen. The crowd is exultant, young, excited; the performers are a group of senior citizens called the Young at Heart Chorus. Their repertoire is varied; their average age is 80. Over the past several years they've toured internationally, acclaimed for their renditions of modern pop and rock songs, all under the guidance of their musical director Bob Cillman.

Directed by Stephen Walker, Young @ Heart follows the chorus through the rehearsals and gigs leading up to the chorus's new big show -- which they have just seven weeks to prepare for. And at once, Young@Heart takes all the standard-issue concerns of the touring band documentary -- creative differences, struggles with the material, preparation and publicity -- and reframes them all in a very different context. The members of Young at Heart aren't looking to become stars or even make a living with their music -- so why exactly are they doing it? And, more bluntly, are the crowds that come out to their shows and tours -- as they cover material from The Clash and Coldplay and Outkast and more -- laughing with the chorus, or at them?

Comic-Con: Gwyneth Paltrow Talks To Us About Playing Pepper Potts in 'Iron Man,' Breaking Bones and Happy Hogan

While sporting some serious heels that looked like they might be able to give the Iron Man armor a run for it's money, Gwyneth Paltrow gracefully strutted into our interview and talked about her return to sci-fi, how she approached Pepper Potts, husband Chris Martin's acting in Extras, and her bone-breaking injury.

Click on Gwyneth to hear the interview, which includes highlights like:
  • What it's been like working on Iron Man as compared to Sky Captain and The World of Tomorrow.
  • Exactly what happened to her leg. (Ouch!)
  • She's been a been fan of both Robert Downey Jr. and Jon Favreau, and signed on to play Pepper Potts even before reading the script.
  • She used to watch Jeff Bridges in The Jagged Edge on Betamax when she was a kid, and loved working with him in this film, "He's the Big Lebowski!"
  • Longtime Iron Man buddy Happy Hogan WILL be in this film, although she wasn't really allowed to say who will be playing him. Based on the love for Jeff Bridges that she kept mentioning, signs are pointing to the fact that it'll be him.
  • "This is not just a movie for guys ... I think women will be happy to accompany their guys to it."
  • She is "very organized" like Pepper Potts, but says she doesn't have a complicated relationship with a superhero. "Well, I kind of do," referring to hubby Chris Martin, of Coldplay.
  • The idea of her children one day playing with a Pepper Potts action figure is, "Kind of weird."

Coldplay sort of take a page from the Beastie book

Clearly inspired by the wildly successful (from a cinematic and musical perspective, that is, not a financial one) fan-shot Beastie Boys concert film, Awesome; I F*ckin' Shot That!, Brit band Coldplay plan to equip fans at their upcoming Toronto concert with digital video cameras. There are, however, some major different between the approaches taken by the two bands. For one thing, the Beasties handed out 50 cameras and consequently had a ton of footage and angles from which to choose when the film was edited. Coldplay, on the other hand, will be using only four fan-manned cameras, which said fans will have to win on the band's website (the lucky four get to keep the cameras, whereas the Beasties took all of them back). Additionally, the footage shot by Coldplay's fans will only be "eligible for inclusion on the...DVD," which makes it sound suspiciously like they're trying to drum up publicity for being cutting edge, all the while knowing that the final result will be your typical, professionally shot concert film, only with a five minute DVD extra titled "Footage shot by you! The FANS!"

Paltrow is, like, sooooo pregnant

Filed under: Celebrities and Controversy »

Gwyneth PaltrowAnother day, another confusing headline: "Gwyneth Paltrow says she's pregnant."

It sounds as if the headline writer has some doubt, doesn't it? Like Paltrow would lie or something. But the confusion doesn't end there. The first line of the piece says that the syndicated show The Insider is reporting that she's pregnant. But that "reporting" is based on not only Lou Diamond Philips introducing her as pregnant at a screening of Proof but also on Paltrow herself confirming to a reporter that, yes, she's pregnant.

Does every celeb story/gossip story/infotainment nugget have to have some coyness to it? Shouldn't the headline just be "Paltrow pregnant with second child" or something similar? Unless Paltrow says, "you know when I said I was pregant? Just kidding. Actually, it was just an allergy," I think we can stop all the bizarre, confusing reporting.
