Peep These Hobbit Holes!
Filed under: Action », Sci-Fi & Fantasy », Fandom », Peter Jackson », Comic/Superhero/Geek », Remakes and Sequels », Images », ComicCon »
Hey, LOTR fans! Even though The Hobbit isn't due until 2011, the crew in New Zealand has already started digging some holes for the hobbitses. TheOneRing, your source for all things hairy-toed, has some very cool pictures of the rebuilding of Hobbiton. So far we're only seeing roads, foliage, and the aforementioned hobbit holes, but it's whetting the proverbial whistle for what will hopefully be more Hobbit news out of the San Diego Comic-Con, which starts later this week. Producer Peter Jackson will be there to talk up the deliciously apocalyptic District 9, but rumors abound that there will be Hobbit-y deets leaking out from those insanely packed halls. So far Jackson's denied he will be announcing who will play Bilbo at SDCC. He told Empire, "We're starting to think about casting, but we're knee-deep in the script right now. And when we do go to actors, they're probably going to ask to see a script, so we're powering ahead with getting the first draft done." It's not like both he and Hobbit director Guillermo del Toro aren't already working on enough different projects to make my head spin, but a fanboy or girl can hope, right? Right now, the odds-on favorites are Harry Potter himself, Daniel Radcliffe, Hot Scot™ James McAvoy, and David "Ten Inch" Tennant from Dr. Who. In turn, there are rumors that a Dr. Who movie will be announced at Comic-Con.
Stay tuned to Cinematical for the latest from Comc-Con! The crew there will be Tweeting it up from the convention floor.
Doctor Who Heads for the Sexy 'St. Trinians'
Filed under: Comedy », Casting », Remakes and Sequels »
Earlier this month, Jenni posted that St. Trinians -- that saucy, British bad girl/private school flick -- is getting a sequel called St. Trinian's II: The Legend of Fritton's Gold. This time around, the girls find out that headmistress Fritton (Rupert Everett) is related to a famous pirate, so they set out on a hunt for buried treasure. With production just kicking off, Empire reports that their arch-nemesis has been found -- Doctor Who's David Tennant. But this is no cheery role for the Who actor. In a twist reminiscent of his stint in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Tennant will play a misogynist named Pomfrey, who is "part of a woman-hating secret society called AD1." Naturally, when tough high school girls set out to find pirate booty, who would they find but a jerky misogynist!?
I'm sure he'll get a good, fun beating from the ladies, but please -- can someone give the man something meatier? He's already proved his worth by taking over Who from the beloved Eccleston and wowing the pants off of most fans. That's no easy feat and proves that he's better than the evil thorn in the side of British private school students. Don't you agree?
It Isn't a Pipe Dream: 'Doctor Who' Movie is in the Early Stages
Filed under: Sci-Fi & Fantasy », RumorMonger »
My fangirl heart went a-fluttering almost two years ago when news popped up that Doctor Who might get a feature film. At the time, it was only the littlest morsel to chew on. A bigwig at the BBC had said that they would not rule out a feature adaptation of the irresistible sci-fi show. In other words -- it was a big, fan-tugging tease with absolutely no gaurantees. But now it looks like it's one step closer to reality. While the BBC was covering news that David Tennant would pop up on The Sarah Jane Adventures before handing over his sonic screwdriver to Matt Smith, a much tastier morsel was revealed. An unnamed spokeswoman for BBC Films confirmed that "a script is in development." Now they warn that this doesn't gaurantee that the film will come to fruition, and if it does, it's a long ways away. But we've already waited months since the last bit of news, so I'm thinking fans can be patient, especially if it means getting big-screen Who.
The only question, then, is who would star on it, and what would they possibly do to change things up for the feature treatment? We haven't seen the newest Who yet, but I can't help but hope that it would be Tennant up there reveling in one last adventure. Heck, they could even mess things up and bring back the different-yet-excellent Christopher Eccleston. What say you?

News Bites: Donated Skulls, Wincott in Sweden, and a Scribe for 'Captain Blood'
This first bit might be a bit off the cinematic path, but it's something strange enough to rival those stories of a frozen Walt Disney. You might have heard that David Tennant (our latest Doctor Who) is starring in a stage version of Hamlet over in the UK. Well, it seems that he wasn't using a fake skull -- in fact, it was the skull of a Shakespeare enthusiast, concert pianist and Holocaust survivor Andrew Tchaikowsky. Tennant leaked the information, and now the BBC reports that it will no longer be used so that the audience wouldn't be distracted. Bummer for Tchaikowsky's dying wish, but imagine the possibilities. Is bone donation the next wave in creative appreciation? In other dark news, Variety reports that the classically creepy Michael Wincott (Top Dollar from The Crow) is teaming up with Swedish actor/director Rafael Edholm for an untitled Sweden-set drama. According to Wincott: "Three people meet, something may have happened in their teenage years, and this will now result ín one death. It is drama, thriller and dark comedy." Unfortunately, we won't learn what that all means for a while -- production isn't slated to start until February 2010.
Finally, we've got a scribe for the upcoming remake of Captain Blood. The Hollywood Reporter posts that John Brownlow, writer of 2003's Sylvia, has grabbed the gig. If you're not familiar with the Oscar-nominated original, Errol Flynn starred as a doctor convicted of treason who is sold into slavery only to escape and become a pirate. This whole thing makes me itch for Cary Elwes to return to his escaped prisoner-turned-pirate roots. Who's with me?
Doctor Who: Another Feature Film?

I'm so not a fan of most science fiction, but man, Doctor Who fills me with fangirl glee. Even when the show gets almost too campy to bear, I'm there, eating it up -- but even with its misses and sometimes-silliness, the show has done a great job of bringing the series into the next century. And hey -- any show that can survive the loss of their main character, Christopher Eccleston, and bring on the likes of David Tennant, well, they know what they're doing. Why does this matter to Cinematical? Well, just the other day, The Guardian announced that the BBC might be considering another Doctor Who movie. The details: Jane Tranter, the BBC controller of fiction, talked about a BBC move and said: "This move is not about making feature films about things that are on the television -- those ideas are staring us in the face already and may seem too obvious." However, when asked about Who: "I would not rule out a film version of Doctor Who, no." Sure, she only said she wouldn't rule it out, but that statement coming after the previous one is telling. Of course, it's understandable that they would look into features since the show is doing so damned well for the BBC. I can only hope that if they do, we get more Tennant, and please, oh please, more Captain Jack Harkness. What say you?
