Lauren Shuler Donner Talks Deadpool & X-Men Prequels

Filed under: Action », RumorMonger », Fandom », Scripts », 20th Century Fox », Newsstand », Comic/Superhero/Geek », Remakes and Sequels »

The wonderful people at Empire have landed a big interview with Lauren Shuler Donner where she foretells the future of all the X-Men spinoffs. Not surprisingly, the majority of their energy is being focused on Wolverine's adventures in Japan, and he'll be seeing production long before Deadpool, X-Men: First Class, and Magneto. While it's heartening to hear they don't plan on straying from the Chris Claremont / Frank Miller story, I'll need an amnesia bullet to forget at all the continuity errors in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, so I'm not going to hold my breath.

The best news belongs to the Deadpool spinoff. According to Donner, you can forget all about the abomination called Deadpool in Wolverine. "I want to ignore the version of Deadpool that we saw in Wolverine and just start over again. Reboot it. Because this guy talks, obviously, and to muzzle him would be insane." Don't look for Hal Jordan to jeopardize the future of Wade Wilson, either. "I don't see it as a problem that Ryan [Reynolds] is also playing Green Lantern. I mean, look at Harrison Ford - he was in Stars Wars and Indiana Jones at the same time and everyone was fine with that. Green Lantern could not be more different to Wade Wilson." Donner promises it will be a "dark, snarky, very funny movie," echoes Reynolds' fourth wall promises, and stresses it may be one of the hardest stories Fox has handled thus far.

Donner also made X-Men: First Class sound a lot more promising than previous stories did, but maybe I'm just softening on the idea. As you may remember, First Class will be loosely based on the comic series and will follow the early adventures and schooling of the X-Men we already know and love.

Ryan Reynolds Makes Deadpool Promises

Filed under: Action », Sci-Fi & Fantasy », Fandom », Scripts », 20th Century Fox », Newsstand », Comic/Superhero/Geek », Remakes and Sequels »

The announcement of a Deadpool spinoff was pretty much a non-event. It was a guarantee the moment they cast Ryan Reynolds way back in February 2008. It may even have been predestined from the moment Reynolds was born. It's probably written on a scroll somewhere ... a scroll illustrated by Rob Liefeld, because that's how mysticism works.

The real issue is whether or not fans care after they trotted out a guy with arm-katanas and called him Deadpool. (Let's pretend it matters that we do or don't.) There was a lot of happy talk that Reynolds was "actively developing" the spin-off, but Hugh Jackman "actively developed" X-Men Origins: Wolverine, too.

So, take HitFix's interview with Reynolds for what it's worth. Drew McWeeny caught up with the man who assured fans he would really give us the Merc with a Mouth: "Well, I'm intimately involved with it. We're just trying to break a story right now and figure out who the villain is going to be and all that stuff. But, it's going to be just like the comic books. I'm gonna have a messed up face and you may see some flashbacks of Wade earlier in his life, but primarily what you see is what you get in the comics and that's the goal. And there is no better place to draw material from then the comics which are incredible." There's a fragment of hope there. Grab onto it, and dream of a movie where Wilson cracks jokes about spin-offs and franchises like he mocks the pages of his comic book.

What a Surprise -- Deadpool Getting A Spin-Off!

Filed under: Action », Casting », Deals », Scripts », 20th Century Fox », Newsstand », Comic/Superhero/Geek », Remakes and Sequels »

It's a real non-surprise that mere days after the premiere of X-Men Origins: Wolverine, confirmed sequels and spin-offs have begun hitting the trades. (Of course, they had been basically a go-ahead since filming on Wolverine began, but that goes without saying.) Yesterday, Fox and Hugh Jackman confirmed they were actively developing a Wolverine sequel set in Japan, today the MTV Splash Page got the official word that they were going ahead with a Deadpool spin-off. (Variety and The Hollywood Reporter subsequently confirmed the story, but it did arise on MTV first.)

Of course, if you saw Wolverine -- spoiler warning ahead -- you are undoubtedly wondering how this could be since Deadpool was cleanly beheaded by our feral hero. But those of you who stuck around for the credits and got the Deadpool secret ending saw that he picked up his head, broke the fourth wall to shush you, and went on his merry way. I'm going to assume that a Deadpool spin-off would actually proceed from this point, and not delve into Wilson's background pre-Wolverine. That would also go along with comments Ryan Reynolds made claiming he wasn't playing Deadpool in Wolverine, but Wade Wilson and the creature who becomes Deadpool. Considering what they did to that "creature," fans may be really glad there's some wiggle room in that statement.

Personally, I think they could retcon that, have Wilson stuck rotting in some cell, and pass that Deadpool wannabe off as some kind of clone. Stupider things were done in that film, I could excuse that rewrite ... and as Reynolds has said he wants a film that sticks to the character continuity, there might be some hope for the Merc with a Mouth.

New 'X-Men Origins: Wolverine' T.V. Spot Flaunts the Cast

Filed under: Action », Fandom », 20th Century Fox », Newsstand », Movie Marketing », Comic/Superhero/Geek », Remakes and Sequels », Trailers and Clips »

A new television spot for X-Men Origins: Wolverine hit the net today, and it's worth watching to see a few of the new characters in action. They're emphasizing Emma Frost in this one, and confirming once and for all that the young punk in the sunglasses is Cyclops. (Guess we know which Marvel couple won't ever get together onscreen!)

What I find curious is the complete and utter lack of Dominic Monaghan or Ryan Reynolds, who supposedly had their parts beefed up. Reynolds is particularly surprising since he's one of the biggest names in the film, and playing a very popular character. Considering they're supposed to be grooming Deadpool for a spinoff, it's pretty odd ... but it might be because fans are in an uproar over his weird ritual scars and faux claws. (Reynolds has confirmed the pale dude fighting Wolverine is Deadpool to the MTV Splash Page. You can howl in outrage, now.)

By the way, Marvel has declared April to be Wolverine Art Appreciation Month in honor of his 35th anniversary. This has nothing to do with appreciating his physique, but instead will see him recreated in the style of famous artists and works of art. They're really pretty cool -- you can see a few of our favorites in the gallery below, and the rest on Marvel's site, and on the Washington Post.

Geek Daily: Spider-Man 4, Deadpool, Monster Attack Network, and More!

When it comes to superhero franchises, the news just never ends, and the next one on everyone's radar is bound to be Spider-Man 4. It has its release date set (May 6, 2011) and Sam Raimi says they're only working on part four at this point, and still in the middle of hashing out a story. They are, however, close to choosing the big baddie: "All the characters or villains, whatever we decide to do will be from Stan Lee's creations or those that came after him." He's also planning to write in Mary Jane, and hopes Kirsten Dunst agrees to come back ... so I guess that's an indication she's still not signed the way Tobey Maguire is. [MTV]

X-Men Origins: Wolverine
seems to have test screened, somewhere, and spoiler filled reviews are hitting the Internet. (Scott Adkin Fanz has one, but its origin is uncertain. Read at your own risk.) I haven't read them (surprises in this job are so far and few between that I'd like to go into Wolverine fairly fresh) but Devin Faraci is wondering how the heck they can go to Japan from here ... or anywhere, really.

One of the biggest questions (other than: Will it suck?) surrounding Wolverine is what they've done with Deadpool. The LA Times' Dish Rag caught up with Ryan Reynolds and he painted a tiny picture of how the film approaches the character: "I don't even look at it like I play Deadpool. I really think I'm more or less playing Wade Wilson, obviously, and then I'm playing the creature that will eventually become Deadpool. But in this movie, it's sort of his newly formed version, so to speak." He also shrugs off rumors that he's being groomed for his own spinoff. "I've had a couple of people approach me about meetings for a 'Deadpool' movie, but I just think it's absurd to even think that way until this movie comes out."

Geek Daily: The Opening Scene of 'Iron Man 2', Deadpool, Battlestar Galatica, 'Watchmen' Marketing

Filed under: Action », Sci-Fi & Fantasy », Universal », Warner Brothers », RumorMonger », Fandom », 20th Century Fox », Newsstand », Movie Marketing », Comic/Superhero/Geek », Remakes and Sequels », Trailers and Clips »

So far, much of the Iron Man 2 news has been frustrating -- but here's a bit of sunshine for you. NPR did an interview with production designer J. Michael Riva, who had just gotten the first script. Apparently, right on the first page is: Tony, in the Iron Man armor, pukes in a toilet. "I design a toilet," says Riva. "My big job for the day. After that I can go home. My kids ask me, 'What'd you do today, Dad?' I designed a toilet!'" Maybe Tony has motion sickness, maybe he has the flu ... or maybe it's Demon in a Bottle. [via CHUD]

Many were left a bit disappointed by the three X-Men Origins: Wolverine spots that aired on Fox last weekend, but that's nothing compared to the berserker rage that's centering on Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool. Film School Rejects became alarmed at images of Deadpool's action figure. While it's not surprising that Deadpool is lacking his distinctive costume in his initial appearance (we've all theorized that his disfiguration happens in this film if they are going to do a Deadpool spinoff), it looks like they've revamped the character. Instead of his hamburger face, he may be sporting some kind of weird tattoo, body paint, or ritual scarring instead. The Deadpool Bugle has high res photos of the figure and the packaging for you to make your own assessment.

In the "But why now?" category of news comes talk of a Battlestar Galactica movie -- a flick based not on the current, critically acclaimed series, but on the 1978 version. IGN claims Glen A. Larson is being lined up to script and produce it. This seems so crazy and lame as that it's probably true.

'Wolverine' Reshoots Giving Deadpool and Beak Extra Screen Time

Filed under: Action », RumorMonger », Celebrities and Controversy », 20th Century Fox », DIY/Filmmaking », Newsstand », Comic/Superhero/Geek », Remakes and Sequels »

It seems to me that you can probably trust Hugh Jackman -- when he told AICN that the reshoots were centered on other actors, he was right ... although you could argue that beefing up characters and adding scenes is pretty extensive stuff after all.

IESB.net reports that the X-Men Origin: Wolverine reshoots revolve around Deadpool, and that Ryan Reynolds was up in Vancouver shooting additional scenes between Deadpool and Wolverine. Details are scarce, so that's easily something that can fit under Jackman's explanation of "schedule conflicts and weather problems," it could mean that they liked Reynolds' Deadpool so much they wanted more, or it could be some story issues. Who knows.

PopWrap
caught up with Dominic Monaghan, who revealed that his casting was practically an overnight offer. Monaghan only filmed for nine days, and is also one of the actors up in Vancouver for reshoots, and confirmed there were new scenes being added to the film. "We're doing a bit of both, more than anything else, it's an additional scene which I would get shot in the head if I told you anything about. But my character features in a huge set piece with Hugh and Liev [Schreiber]. I think the best thing I can tell you is that it's a flashback scene."

So there you are -- these reshoots may be a sign of hope or disaster, but one thing they mean is that you will get more Deadpool and Beak in the film.

Hugh Jackman Reaches Out Via AICN, Attaches Photo

The enhanced senses of Wolverine were tingling thanks to all of us talking about those "extensive" reshoots. They were tingling so much that his real life counterpart Hugh Jackman actually e-mailed Harry Knowles at Ain't It Cool News to clarify what was going on with X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and sent a photo that includes Deadpool, which I've added to our gallery below.

Here's Jackman's e-mail in its entirety, for your reading pleasure:

"Hey Mate- Would you mind posting this? Thank you for your support! HJ

Hey everyone -

It's Hugh Jackman, sending this note from freezing Vancouver. I have read a lot of your online comments regarding the footage that we are currently shooting and I share your passion for the Wolverine character and the movie - I owe it all to you guys!

I wanted to reach out and let you know that due to scheduling conflicts with certain cast members and location/weather considerations, we had to wait until now to shoot a couple of scenes. Please rest assured that WOLVERINE will be badass and hopefully meet all of your expectations. I am stoked by the positive response to the teaser, which clearly reflects the tone and scope of the film. If you like that, we've got much more in store!

In the meantime, here's an exclusive shot of some characters you may recognize ...

Cheers,

Hugh
."

So, they apparently aren't that extensive, but the usual type of pick-up shots, and we must continue to hope that Gavin Hood's vision wasn't crushed under the studio heel. In the meantime, I'm going to go giggle over the fact that Jackman's e-mail is apparently "fox.com," and then sulk because he doesn't e-mail me. Maybe I should play harder to get.

Geek Daily: 'Iron Man 2' Villain, 'Sgt Rock', Magneto & Deadpool

Filed under: Action », Casting », Warner Brothers », RumorMonger », Scripts », 20th Century Fox », Newsstand », Comic/Superhero/Geek », Remakes and Sequels », War »

Lots of maddening hints in the news today -- I share them merely in order to tease you as they have me.

Like this one, for example -- Justin Theroux says he and Jon Favreau have now decided on a villain for Iron Man 2, and the announcement will be held "at some Comic-Con or something." [IGN]

Or this: Guy Ritchie has a lead in mind for Sgt. Rock, but he won't say who, except that it's no one from his past films. So you can cross Jason Statham, Mark Strong, Robert Downey Jr., and Gerard Butler off the "Names That Rumor-Mongerers Love" list. He did say the script is done, it will be set in WWII, and it will feature Easy Company. However, the biggest hurdle in getting it made is its budget which is "slightly intimidating." [MTV Splash Page]

David S. Goyer says the Master of Magnetism's origin movie is on hold until X-Men Origins: Wolverine comes out. If Wolverine is a success, then Magneto gets his origin movie. I think that seems unfair, don't you? [Superhero Hype]

Can Superheroes Save 20th Century Fox From Itself?

Filed under: Action », Sci-Fi & Fantasy », RumorMonger », Celebrities and Controversy », Box Office », Fandom », 20th Century Fox », DIY/Filmmaking », Newsstand », Comic/Superhero/Geek », Remakes and Sequels »

Fox has not had a good year -- and as with most drama-filled issues, they really have only themselves to blame. Variety points out that they were the only studio this summer that didn't have a $100 million domestic earner. What they did have was a lot of widely-derided flops like The Happening, Space Chimps, and Meet Dave. They also had films that might have done well, had they chosen to actually sell them, like The X-Files: I Want to Believe. They were also dealt a bit of bad luck when it came to X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which was supposed to come out this summer, making it the greatest superhero year ever, but was delayed due to Hugh Jackman's commitment to Australia. (A film which the studio is really hoping bails them out come fall, along with Marley and Me.)

Faced with so much failure and drama, what is a studio to do? Well, turn to superheroes, of course! As you read this, they're holding strategy meetings to dust off or create some new franchises off their comic book properties. They're looking at more X-Men spinoffs, including a young X-Men project that might just be X-Men First Class. They're also looking at giving Deadpool his own movie -- which seems a no-brainer when you have Ryan Reynolds playing him in Wolverine. Why, they're even looking at reviving Daredevil. (Frank Miller and Jason Statham, call on line two.) It's enough to wind up any Marvel fan.
