Video Game Voice Acting Isn't a Crime

Filed under: Fandom », Tech Stuff », Home Entertainment »

It wasn't until fairly recently that voice acting in video games was done by either no-name actors trying to pay the bills or B- and C-list actors who were, well, also trying to pay the bills. The Command and Conquer games began employing a mixed bag of actors in its 1999 iteration, Command and Conquer: Tiberian Sun, when they managed to snag Luke Skywalker's big daddy James Earl Jones, but otherwise continued casting random character actors like Udo Kier and Barry Corbin in future games like Command and Conquer: Red Alert 2.

Grand Theft Auto III changed the game, literally, with its roster of recognizable names and voices like Joe Pantoliano, Michael Madsen, Michael Rapaport, Debi Mazar, and Kyle MacLachlan all playing parts in the free-for-all crime cape that make Rockstar Games just that. With GTA III's massive sales and buzz (particularly from angry parents), the scene was set for Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, which boasted an over-the-top cast particularly appealing to its target audience: Dennis Hopper, Danny Trejo, Gary Busey, Lee Majors, Debbie Harry, Ray Liotta, Tom Sizemore, and Jenna Jameson, just to name a few.

Indie Watch: Full Grown Men

Filed under: Comedy », Independent », Exhibition », Cinematical Indie », Trailers and Clips »

Earlier this month, I posted about a contest for Full Grown Men. It's the story of a 30-something man and father (Matt McGrath) who can't seem to grow up, so he runs away from home -- right back to his childhood. But it's not just a case of a man taking comfort in environmental memories -- he puts on the whole kid suit, reverting back to the self-centered and pretty careless kid he once was as he tries to hook up with an old friend and find reinforcement for his idea that never growing up is okay.

I was able to see a screener of the film, which just opened in New York City, and it's not a bad indie. I will admit -- watching a man act like a selfish child can be pretty tiresome, but there are some great supporting performances that make the journey enjoyable -- Judah Friedlander as the friend, plus Alan Cumming as a "disgruntled ex-theme park employee," Amy Sedaris as "a horny bartending clown," and Debbie Harry as "a delusional mermaid."

The film is currently playing at the Cinema Village Theater in New York City, and will roll out to San Francisco, Florida, and other cities next month.

Win a Chance to See 'Full Grown Men'

I've no idea how I never noticed this during my random searches on IMDb, but there's a new indie film coming out that sounds like it could be a lot of fun; it has a great cast that makes things even better, and there's a contest to win tickets. The film in question is Full Grown Men, and Emerging Pictures' blog has thrown up a contest to win tickets to the film's New York City opening on June 25, with further contests to follow for San Francisco and Miami.

The film stars Matt McGrath (the spurned friend in The Anniversary Party) as a man who acts more like a kid than an adult. When his wife chastises him for being a playmate to his son rather than a father, he grabs his childhood friend (Judah Friedlander) and heads for their favorite theme park in Central Florida, where they're confronted with the incongruities between their past and present. But it's also got some sweet cameos -- Alan Cumming as a "disgruntled ex-theme park employee," Amy Sedaris as "a horny bartending clown," and Debbie Harry as "a delusional mermaid."

As for the contest ... this is all about boys trapped in men's bodies, so you just have to do a little writing. "If you're in love with an overgrown boy, or it's your own inner child that's gone wild -- or if you're just noticing Peter Pandemonium everywhere" you can comment in the EP blog and grab your chance to win. And if you are in NYC, San Fran, or Miami and check it out, let us know what you thought of the movie.

Peter Sarsgaard and Debbie Harry Join 'Dying Animal'

Filed under: Drama », Casting », Deals »

According to a recent report in Variety, the Lakeshore Entertainment adaptation of Philip Roth's 2001 novella Dying Animal has added Peter Sarsgaard (whose latest film Year of the Dog opens this week), Dennis Hopper and former Blondie lead singer Debbie Harry to its cast. These three will be joining the previously cast Penelope Cruz, Ben Kingsley and Patricia Clarkson. In the film, Cruz will play a graduate student who has an affair with a much older professor played by Kingsley. Cruz's character returns years later with a revelation. According to Wikipedia, the novella Dying Animal marked the third appearance of Kingsley's character, Professor David Kepesh, who had previously appeared in The Breast and The Professor of Desire. No word on how these three new additions to the cast will fit into the story.

The film is being directed by Isabel Coixet, adapted by Nicholas Meyer (perhaps best known for his involvement in the Star Trek film franchise) and produced by Tom Rosenberg and Gary Lucchesi. Lakeshore International will distribute the film overseas, selling territories at the upcoming Cannes Film Festival. The company is also currently in production on Pathology (the story of two medical students trying to commit the perfect murder), the Clive Barker adaptation Midnight Meat Train and the serial killer film Untraceable. Since the Variety article refers to the film as untitled, I can envision a meeting in which someone said, "Dying Animal? Who's going to pay to see a movie about road kill?" Whatever it ends up being called, it starts shooting next month in Vancouver.

Kirsten Dunst: I Sing and Dance in 'Spider-Man 3'

In case the latest trailer hasn't spoiled enough of Spider-Man 3 for you, Kirsten Dunst supplied SCI FI Wire with some information on what her character is up to as the movie begins. Mary Jane is a successful actress on Broadway, where she sings and dances. And though she didn't specify, I'm guessing that Dunst did her own singing and dancing for the part. The character also apparently wears a necktie throughout most of the movie, though the reason for this is unclear. While Dunst didn't give SCI FI Wire any real plot points, she mentioned that we will get to watch her character deteriorate and get beat down (we can assume she means mentally, not physically). If you dislike her portrayal of MJ as much as I do, this may be something for you to look forward to.

Personally, I can't really look forward to anything relating to Dunst's appearance in the new Spidey movie. But as with any movie she's in that I like (Small Soldiers, Dick, Marie Antoinette, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and many others), I will tolerate her. I just hope that her singing and dancing is a little better than her acting. Maybe if she's talented enough, she can provide her own singing voice for her upcoming role as Blondie front-runner Debbie Harry. Speaking of which, supposedly the casting of Dunst as Harry has upset a lot of Blondie fans, who have been posting complaints on message boards all over the web. I guess I'm not the only one who dislikes Dunst's acting. Fortunately for Dunst, she has an easy reply for all the disappointed: Debbie Harry handpicked her for the part.

Kirsten Dunst Has a Heart of Glass

Filed under: Drama », Music & Musicals », Casting »

I wish that I could say that the following is just a rumor. Or that this is a bad dream. However, if it's the latter, I've got to start dreaming about more exciting things than blogging. Over the last few months, I've brought you a number of possible movie biopics, one of which was Kirsten Dunst hinting that she would be taking on the role of a "well-known" singer for Michel Gondry's next film. Now we've got it straight from the horse's mouth, and I can't find my duct tape to make it not so. Dunst will portray Blondie front-woman Debbie Harry in an upcoming movie. Whether Gondry is still involved, I don't know.

The cries of people questioning Kirsten as the famous punk goddess of the 80's must've gotten back to Ms. Dunst. Variety has a quote from the actress, who is very firm about her role and possible naysayers: "She chose me, so anyone who disputes that choice can take it up with her." Sorry, but that's not enough to calm my fears. People make mistakes, and have questionable judgment at times. Remember when Anne Rice approved the quite-terrible Queen of the Damned? Hell, the movie wasn't only bad, but it massacred the novel's story. The only thing that could change my mind about this choice is an amazing, shocking performance from Dunst. However, is it in her? When she was having her own days with Rice's material, I might have gotten behind the choice as a future prospect, now, it seems like a gloominous rocker doom.

Kirsten Dunst -- The New Debbie Harry!?

Filed under: Music & Musicals », RumorMonger », Newsstand »

When shocking, strange or just plain crazy bits of information swim through the veins of movie news, there's often some way to disregard it. Maybe it's a rumor, or maybe the people in question aren't the best in the business -- so you can toss it off to a lack of taste. However, when the news is linked to the well-respected, you have to wonder what's in the water. This isn't the first time Kirsten Dunst news has stopped me in my tracks. I wondered what Sam Raimi was thinking with Spider-Man, and then what Sofia Coppola was thinking with Marie Antoinette. (I actually used to enjoy Dunst, but as time has passed, so has the appreciation.)

Now, it looks like I will have to wonder what Michel Gondry is thinking. The man is responsible not only for intriguing music videos like Cibo Matto's Sugar Water, but also for the surreal Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and the more recent, The Science of Sleep. Now, if inferences on her hints are true, Gondry is doing the unthinkable -- something that truly rivals Lindsay Lohan as Stevie Nicks. In an interview for New Zealand's online mag Stuff, Kirsten Dunst started hinting at her next project with Gondry: "[It's] about somebody who everybody knows, but I can't say who it is." She then admitted that the somebody in question is a "well-known singer." If she is, indeed, going to be singing about a Heart of Glass, let's just hope they use the original music and not a Dunst version. To give her credit, she looks similar, but can she pull of the curling lip and killer eyes?
