Jon Hamm Has a 'Sucker Punch' for Zack Snyder!

Filed under: Action », Sci-Fi & Fantasy », Thrillers », Casting », Warner Brothers », Newsstand »

Zack Snyder's Sucker Punch has been like a rare jewel of girl power with its all female cast, but a little testosterone never hurt anyone, especially if belongs to Jon Hamm. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Hamm has just signed on to be the sole man on set against the likes of Emily Browning, Jena Malone, Abbie Cornish, Vanessa Hudgens, Jamie Chung, and Carla Gugino.

As you know, the film centers on a young girl named Baby Doll (Browning) who is sent away to a mental health institution by her stepfather. He intends to have her lobotomized in five days time, and the horror of that sends her and her fellow inmates planning for an escape in a twisted Alice in Wonderland world of adventure and ass-kicking. THR notes that Hamm's role is being kept under tight wraps, that he's only known to be playing someone named High Roller. But given what major role has yet to be cast, I'm willing to bet he's playing the stepfather. I wouldn't be surprised if we see Hamm doing a bit of Captain Hook duty, and popping up as the antagonist of the girls' dream world as well.

Between the cast, the concept, and the girl sized t-shirt, there's not much more Snyder could add to this film to make me long for 2011 more than I already do. But something tells me he'll find room for some 300 and Watchmen cast cameos, and then the wait will really become unbearable.

Watchmen Video Journal #9: The Easter Eggs

Filed under: Action », Classics », Sci-Fi & Fantasy », Mystery & Suspense », Warner Brothers », Newsstand », Movie Marketing », Comic/Superhero/Geek », Trailers and Clips »

It's the 6th of December, and that means a new Watchmen video diary. This is video #9, which actually freaks me out a little bit, because it seems like yesterday that I was posting the first one. Official trailers, posters, ComicCon panels were miles on the horizon, to say nothing of the film itself. Now, we only have three more to go before the movie will be in theaters. It's going to be over before you know it. You will wake up tomorrow and it'll be March 6th, and you will either have seen it at a midnight showing, or be anxiously waiting your turn.

Anyway, enough about the passage of time -- the 9th journal is online at Omelete, and you can access it by clicking on the link or the photo above. (If either stop working, you're going to have to practice your Portuguese to find it -- it's the little button labeled Videoblog Dir. De Arte.) This one is all about the Easter Eggs buried within the film, little visual nods and set embellishments that will make the graphic novel come to life. It feels a little like we've heard and seen it before, but much of the footage is new, like the close-up of the newsstand above. The surface detail continues to leave me stunned -- and yet, I am horrified Laurie must wear that hideous red smock outfit from the book. If anything was begging to be changed, it was that! Watch, enjoy, and comment.

Watchmen Video Journal #6

Filed under: Action », Sci-Fi & Fantasy », Thrillers », Mystery & Suspense », Warner Brothers », Fandom », Movie Marketing », Comic/Superhero/Geek », Trailers and Clips »

The sixth Watchmen video journal is a treat. Not only is it a nice change of pace from the lawsuit updates, but it
may serve as a small consolation to those of you who didn't get to see the ComicCon footage. This month is "the look" of Watchmen, and we get to hear from Larry Fong, the director of photography on the film. As cool as it is to hear about the camerawork (and it is cool), it's the glimpses of movie footage that make these set videos extra sweet. Finally, you will get to see Dan Dreiberg in his everyday attire (including the enormous glasses), which is something I have been dying to see hit the web. We also get to see Billy Crudup in his unflattering motion capture suit, the look of which would be enough to yank most actors out of character. And yes, there's an obligatory Rorschach scene that I won't spoil for you. Enjoy the embed, which comes courtesy of IGN.

Watchmen opens March 6th, 2009.

Zack Snyder Returns to the Dead

Thanks to the enormous success of 300, director Zack Snyder can probably set up as many dream projects as he wants right now. He has already been able to get Watchmen up and running and he would certainly be offered the 300 sequel if it happens. Another project that he's just set up is a return to the zombie action-horror genre. It is called Army of the Dead and while it sounds like a sequel to his first big hit, Dawn of the Dead, the fact that this will be made by Warner Bros. instead of Universal makes me think it is definitely not related. Snyder wrote the story, which takes place in a quarantined Las Vegas, and he will co-produce with wife Deborah, but he hasn't announced whether or not he'll direct.

For now it is only known that a script is being written by Joby Harold and that Snyder wants the movie to be a sweeping epic with a style similar to that of 300. I am one of the few zombie movie fans that wasn't too crazy about Snyder's Dawn remake (it seemed to me more a scene-by-scene remake of Maximum Overdrive that substituted zombies for trucks), but because I will watch any movie with zombies, I'm willing to give him another shot. Plus, I love the idea of zombies in Vegas. Whenever I'm at a casino, I already think of the people around me as being like the living dead, and I can certainly imagine zombies blankly playing the slots. Of course, since I'm envisioning a campy movie closer in style to Romero's original Dawn of the Dead, I doubt I will be satisfied. Still, I can't completely dismiss it just because it is different than what I would do, and I'm excited to see what Snyder claims will be the biggest-scale zombie movie yet.
