'Machete' and the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly Casting Twists

The Machete casting news is official. Buried in a longer article, Variety has listed the final cast list for the feature-length adaptation of Danny Trejo's man with the knives. Almost all the rumors are correct, with the exception of Jonah Hill. The roster: Trejo, of course, plus Robert De Niro, Jessica Alba, Michelle Rodriguez, Steven Seagal, Lindsay Lohan, Cheech Marin, Don Johnson, and Jeff Fahey.Strange? Yes. Surprising? Yes. Perfect? I don't know. Now don't get me wrong -- you could fill the film with tween celebs and I'd still head out to see it as long as Danny Trejo was the star. Yet while I usually love big casting twists, this one isn't invoking a reaction either way. It's not due to disinterest, as I've been dying for this to become a reality for a long time -- from rumors of a DVD spin-off, to big-screen potential, to love of Machete as a gun-toter, to silly fangirl hopes from a fake poster.

Could Don Johnson be the next big comeback? I'm sure playing Kristen Bell's dad in When in Rome, or Jason Sudeikis' dad in A Good Old Fashioned Orgy won't do it, but maybe playing a porn director would? I mean, it worked for Burt Reynolds.The Hollywood Reporter posts that Johnson will play a mustachioed director of the XXX films in Adam Sandler's Born to Be a Star. If you remember, the film focuses on a nerd who discovers that his parents were famous porn stars in the '70s, so he sets out to follow their path. But where Reynolds gave us retro porn, Johnson will delight in this century, playing "a down-on-his-luck director" who gives the nerd a shot.
Honestly, I'd pay just to see that, but it helps that Stephen Dorff will play a porn star named Dick Shadow (cue Dirk Diggler), and Edward Herrmann, of all people, also has a role. Am I wrong to think that this might take us back to a better day of Sandler projects? Whatever the case, I'm going to go fire up YouTube, listen to "Heartbeat," and remember the days of rocking out to Don with my Pocket Rockers.

I can literally hear the Jan Hammer as I type this, but when I think Don Johnson, I think Sonny Crocket (and occasionally, the slightly less cool Nash Bridges). I know that Mr. Johnson has many other fine acting credits to his name, but I grew up in the '80s, what can you expect? But, it's not all white suit jackets and '71 Plymouth Barracuda's for Johnson any more. The Hollywood Reporter has announced that the man will be getting back into the feature film game to star in Disney's romantic comedy When in Rome, and the indie feature, A Good Old Fashioned Orgy.Rome stars Kristen Bell (TV's Veronica Mars) as a young American gal "who steals coins from an Italian fountain and finds herself receiving visits from numerous strangers who, having previously thrown coins into the fountain, are now in love with her." Johnson was offered the role by writer-director Mark Steven Johnson (no relation) to play Bell's dad, after a previous project between the two had fallen through. Then it's off to work on Orgy where Johnson will fill in as SNL's Jason Sudeikis' dad (I guess Johnson has finally reached the stage in his career where he is no longer the 'be-stubbled heartthrob' and more of a father figure).
