Abu-Assad Gets 'Eleven Minutes' for a Rewrite
Filed under: Drama », Deals », Scripts »
Not ten minutes, not twelve ... but eleven. That's how long sex lasts, apparently. Just over a year ago, I posted that the Paulo Coelho novel Eleven Minutes was finally getting its shot at the big screen after a few years in development. Marcos Bernstein had been hired to adapt the novel. Now Variety reports that Hany Abu-Assad (Paradise Now) will direct the film, and is also going to rewrite the script. What I find particularly interesting about all of this is the description Variety uses for the Eleven Minutes; the write-up makes no mention of one of the key aspects of the film. I wonder if that was just the writer's choice, or if the film is getting away from the previous description? As I mentioned last year, the book starts off with: "Once upon a time, there was a prostitute called Maria." The description attached to this news piece, however, says that the film will revolve "around Maria, a young girl from a Brazilian village who is swept off to Geneva in an affair with a Swiss businessman. The book's title refers to the average duration of a sexual encounter, and much of Maria's discoveries occur between the sheets."
I'm going to assume it was an oversight, but it would be a nice change of pace to have a movie decide against the prostitute focus for once. Currently, there's no word on when this adaptation will head into production. Maybe next year, since the progress has been slow and easy so far.
Coelho Novel 'Eleven Minutes' Heading for the Big Screen

In yet another example of things that take a while to speed up, there is finally some movement on the adaptation of Paulo Coelho's sexy novel, Eleven Minutes. Way back in 2005, Cinematical posted that New Line and Hollywood Gang Productions were nabbing the adaptation. Now almost two years later, The Hollywood Reporter has announced that Marcos Bernstein has been hired to adapt the novel. He was one of the pens behind Central Station, a Brazilian film that was nominated for Best Actress and Best Foreign Language Film at the 1999 Academy Awards. This time around, Bernstein has to bring to life the story that begins: "Once upon a time, there was a prostitute called Maria." The novel's title comes from the hypothetical average length of time for sex, and the text covers Maria as she leaves Rio to find fame and fortune, only to become a high-class prostitute in Switzerland. But more than just the sex-trade, Minutes deals with her "journey of self-discovery [that] takes her on the many roads of sex and love." I am assuming that covers more than Pretty Woman, which made the trade look like diamonds and champagne. At least Deborah Amelon and Bob Brunner weren't tapped to adapt it -- they're the ones who turned Anne Rice's sexy Exit to Eden into that O'Donnell/Akroyd comedy of pain -- both for the people at the S&M island and those in the audience. Considering how long this is taking to gear up, we should have more news for you in 2009.
