Girls on Film: Women Screenwriters to Watch For
Filed under: Scripts », Columns », Girls on Film »

I covered the world of men writing women back in June, and it's already time to revisit the pen. At the end of July, Variety posted a special collection of articles outlining the Top Ten Screenwriters to keep an eye out for. Unlike most lists, which select only a sliver of female talent (much like the industry as a whole), this ten plays the half and half game. The women who reign supreme: Emma Forrest, Emily Halpern and Sarah Haskins, Mindy Kaling (pictured above with Brenda Withers), Liz Meriwether, and Michelle Morgan.
Six women in a list of twelve screenwriters? (There's a writing duo on each side.) Can't complain about the numbers. There are writers from Harvard and Dartmouth, some who started off as actresses, and one who even made the ginormous leap from reception desks to feature films. They each have a number of projects they're working on, which should bring a lot of female fare to Hollywood. But there's a "but." ... Can you tell?
While these scribes are working on a number of projects ranging from romance to spy capers, it's mostly and essentially all about romantic comedy. Name to name, they're working on romantic underdogs, sluts and "friends with benefits," and class-conscious romcom fare. Emma Forrest's Liars (A-E), which I posted about recently, is about her relationship with Colin Farrell -- and even Halpern and Haskins' Book Smart, which could be about anything when coming from two Harvard grads, is about girls looking for boyfriends at the prom.
Amy Poehler to Be a Super 'Lunch Lady'

As thrilled as I am with the comic / graphic novel boom, I've had three major complaints: not enough superheroines, not enough stories geared for the wee ones, and not enough fresh (i.e. something that doesn't have 30+ years of continuity) adaptations. So, it's nice to read of a little franchise that might buck all three trends ... and that's Amy Poehler as a James Bond-esque lunch lady.According to The Hollywood Reporter, Poehler is set to star in Lunch Lady, based on an upcoming graphic novel series by Jarrett Krosoczka. It's a series aimed at the younger set, and stars a mild-mannered lady who serves school cafeteria food by day, and justice by night. She's not alone in the task. Assisting her is the hairnet wielding Betty, and an arsenal of cafeteria tools revamped into weapons such as fishstick nunchucks and a lunchtray laptop. Both must thwart criminals and three noisy kids, who are keen to discover their double lives. The first graphic novel, Lunch Lady and the League of Librarians is due on shelves this summer, followed closely by Lunch Lady and the Cyborg Substitute. The film's start date is a little more unclear, but the adaptation is being penned by Sarah Haskins and Emily Halpern.
Sure, it sounds goofy, but it could be a lot of fun, especially with Poehler involved. This generation seems to be missing out on the quirky kids movies those of us in our 20s and 30s enjoyed, and I'd like to think that each kid flick I hear about could be Goonies or Monster Squad for the whippersnappers.
