Eric Nicholas Tries to Determine 'The Weaker Sex'

Filed under: Drama », Independent », Thrillers », Deals », Cinematical Indie »

This whole battle of the sexes thing is getting old, not to mention a little tacky. Nevertheless, we have a new indie movie on the way that's titled: The Weaker Sex. Isn't this ancient news? If we've learned anything from Survivor, it's about what sort of division is most shocking and controversial for the times. Tropical battles divided by sex are so 2002. I mean, even racial divides have been done. Give it a year or two, and we'll have a re-visioning of Lord of the Flies. But, I digress.

The man who wrote and directed last year's Alone with Her, Eric Nicholas, is getting ready to direct his sophomore, $12 million effort Weaker, which he also penned. The film is a thriller that follows a group of college kids who get stranded on a tropical island and then fight each other for survival. Considering the title, I assume that its some sort of girls-vs-boys warring, unless they're being particularly punning, and this is some sort of sexual thriller. But, I think not. Maybe he can pull it off if he makes it super campy, in a Faster Pussycat sort of way, but we'll have to wait and see. The movie will start shooting soon in Fiji, so we'll probably have word on the cast soon. Are there any actors or actress you want to see sweaty, scantily-clad and ripping apart the other sex?

IFC Picks Up Colin Hanks' Alone With Her

Well it looks like little Colin Hanks is all grown up, and doing everything in his power not be Tom Hanks 2.0 in his new film Alone With Her. The film screened at the Tribeca Film Festival with positive results, and IFC First Take has picked up the thriller for a 2007 release.

The film stars Hanks and Ana Claudia Talancón -- seen next in Linklater's Fast Food Nation and was written and directed by Eric Nicholas (River Rats). Alone With Her centers on a stalker (Hanks) with a knack for hidden cameras who becomes obsessed with Talancón. Most of the buzz surrounding the film was because of a scene in which Hanks enjoys some "one on one" time with himself while he watches the object of his affection do the same -- It looks like we're a long way from Orange County now. Hanks decided to go the DeNiro route and gained a fair amount of weight for the project, "The guy sits every night in front of the computer, watching his quote-unquote girlfriend, so it's not like he's going to be jogging on the treadmill for 15 minutes every day. It made sense." The one thing Colin does have in common with his dad is a strong on-screen presence, so maybe the release of Alone With Her might just help nudge him out of his father's shadow just a little bit.
