Comic-Con: Ridley Scott Talks to Us About 'Blade Runner'

If there's one thing on my must-buy list this holiday season, it's the mega-multi disc version of Ridley Scott's classic Blade Runner. They've crammed everything except for an actual Replicant into this set, and with any luck it'll be sitting on my shelf soon. That is until they release the Ultra 3D High-Def Download Only Version, Complete With Harrison Ford Commentary. Until then, I can dream.

Ridley's vision, complete with the legendary work of Syd Mead, helped turn this science fiction classic into a look at a dystopian future that still influences the look and feel of science fiction films to this day. As far as my lack-of-sleep-addled brain (Comic-Con really saps your strength, like Kryptonite) can tell, this is the first time Ridley has ever been to a Comic-Con. We were lucky to talk to him about Blade Runner, and the massive amount that's gone into this edition.

While he's calling it more "correcting" than "revising" the film, he does make a few key changes like making Roy Batty (Rutger Hauer) tell Tyrell (Joe Turkel) "I want more life, father" rather than the burned into your brain "I want more life, f**ker." Sure, it's a minor change, but it really changes Batty's tone in that scene. Thankfully they didn't mess with the "tears in the rain" speech, or there would have been a massive fan uprising, the likes of which haven't been seen since the whole "Han shot first" incident.

Comic-Con: Sneak Peek at Upcoming DVDs, Including 'Blade Runner'!

If you're a DVD junkie like me, then you'll end up buying a new Special Platinum Holographic Limited Master Ultra Five Disc Edition of a DVD you already own, just to get some paltry extras, like interviews with the gaffer. I'll admit, it's a sickness, and once Blu-ray and HD-DVD were introduced, it got that much worse for me.

Likewise, if you're a hardcore DVDer, then you probably visit DVD news sites like The Digital Bits and DVD File for the latest news about anything DVD related, no more how trivial, and no matter how much Peter Jackson continues to hammer you over the head with new versions of The Lord of the Rings DVDs.

To that end, our first early morning early morning panel was the DVD Sneak Peeks for 2007. Bill Hunt and Todd Doogan from Bits introduced Charles de Lauzirika, who works on a lot of Ridley Scott's DVD releases ... he has the lucky distinction of working on the Blade Runner: The Final Cut DVD, Javier Soto, who works with Guillermo del Toro, and Robert Meyer Burnett, who directed Free Enterprise and is working on the DVD releases of Shoot 'Em Up and Valkyrie.

Blade Runner: The Final Cut! Finally!

I'll spare you all the superlatives and geek-tastic enthusiasm. If you've got half a working brain then you're already well aware of how respected, admired, intelligent, entertaining and just plain awesome Ridley Scott's Blade Runner is. (Either that or you haven't seen it yet, in which case I envy you a whole lot.) We've been reading about an alleged "mega supreme" DVD edition for what feels like a thousand years ... but now we have a release date. Two, actually! And lucky you if you happen to live in New York or Los Angeles!

October 5 is when Mr. Scott's Blade Runner: The Final Cut will hit a few theaters in New York and L.A. The rest of us will have to wait until December 18, which is when Warner Bros. Home Video aims to release three separate editions of the movie's long-awaited "definitive" cut. Here's the platter breakdown:

1. The two-disc Special Edition, which will probably run you about 18 bucks.

2. The four-disc Collector's Edition, which has two more discs and therefore a lot more stuff.

3. The five-disc Ultimate Collector's Edition, which will contain all of the above plus a fifth disc AND some "Deckard Briefcase" packaging. More those hardcore sci-fi mega-nerds out there. (Hiya fellas. See you at Best Buy.)

Regarding the new version of the film, it's been remastered, rescored, and all kinds of rejiggered -- hopefully for the best. (Long-running complaints about voice-over narration and origami aside, It's not like the last version was really "lacking," now was it?) New scenes and dialog have been added; effects have been polished; you name it. Extras-wise, sheesh. Where to begin? Audio commentaries, a 3.5 (!) hour retrospective documentary and (deep breath) "hours of enhanced content containing featurettes and galleries devoted to over 45 minutes of deleted and alternate scenes recently discovered in deep storage and approved by Ridley Scott, visual effects as well as background on author Philip K. Dick, script development, abandoned sequences, conceptual design, overall impact of the film and how it lead to the birth of cyberpunk. Trailers, TV spots and promotional featurettes will also be included." Whew!

You gotta be kidding me. I'm writing to Santa right this second. And I'm Jewish. (Check out our previous Blade Runner ravings here, here and here.)
