Fox Faith Will Roll Out Gospel Singing Romance Movie

Filed under: Romance », Deals », 20th Century Fox », Family Films », Religious »

Since the only other faith-based production company I'm familiar with is the one that makes those Kirk Cameron movies, it's no surprise that I didn't really know all that much about the new Fox's new "faith-based" company Fox Faith. Variety recently reported that the corporate stepchild, which recently released The Last Sin Eater, has slated an adaptation of the gospel stage play A Good Man Is Hard To Find for the big screen. Leslie Small will be adapting the Rev. David Payton play about three women in the midst of a "spiritual and romantic crisis."

So far, cast announcements have included Golden Brooks from Girlfriends, Darrin Dewitt Henson from Stomp the Yard, and singer Deborah Cox -- at least we are guaranteed one cast member who can sing! The film is just the first of many "faith-based" productions for the company, and the studio seems to think the film's success is a lock, given the market for this kind of fare. Producer Jeff Clanagan was quoted as saying the film is "a bulls-eye for the faith-based African-American market, and it comes with the bonus of having a built-in audience after its tremendous success as a stage play." Shooting has already begun, and the film is set for release this January. Even if a Gospel romcom isn't my idea of a great night at the movies, it can't be any worse than Left Behind.

Jesus Still a Hollywood Power Player, Despite 'The Nativity Story' Bomb

http://www.cinematical.com/media/2006/06/passion.jpgA 13th-place opening weekend doesn't sound good to most studios, but for 20th Century Fox's new Christian division, FoxFaith, it has to sound great. The Ultimate Gift made over $1 million on only 814 screens, which should be encouraging for others in Hollywood still interested in cashing in on success of The Passion of the Christ. Since Mel Gibson's 2003 surprise smash hit about Good Friday, we've seen a flop with the story of Christmas, but there are plenty more holiday origins to bring to the big screen.

Producer Ashok Amritraj is hoping audiences are more interested in the events directly following The Passion of the Christ. He has begun work on Risen -- The Story of the First Easter, which will feature the apostle Peter and his telling of Jesus' resurrection. Amritraj's Hyde Park Entertainment has a deal at Fox, but whether such a big project would be released by FoxFaith, or Fox at all, is not yet decided. Hopefully the film will be completed around the same time as Screen Gems' The Resurrection and MGM's Myriam, Mother of Christ so the three can have an Easter 2008 showdown. In fact, the Weinsteins might want to get in on that action, too.

Fox Unveils Christian Division

Filed under: Distribution », 20th Century Fox », Family Films », Movie Marketing »

20th Century Fox is soon going to have so many specialty divisions that their brand is going to be completely meaningless. Of course, it makes sense for a studio named for a century long past to have a bit of identity trouble, but with Fox 2000, Fox Searchlight, Fox Atomic and now FoxFaith, there's definitely room for confusion. At least FoxFaith, their newest, Christian-themed division has an easily distinguishable name. In fact, it is so literal and appropriate in its name, it sounds more like a new TV channel.

FoxFaith will be producing* 12 films a year, with 6 of these released in theaters under a partnership with the AMC and Carmike cinema chains. While Fox has said they will be marketing the films specifically to evangelical Christians, it isn't clear whether or not the films will be sappy family films dealing with good moral values -- perhaps in conjunction with newly acquired production company Walden Media, which produced Fox's Because of Winn-Dixie -- or if they'll also include violent Bible films like The Passion of the Christ, which was released in theaters by Newmarket but on DVD by Fox. All that is known is that the division's first release will be Love's Abiding Joy, part of the Western series based on the novels of Janette Oke. I doubt this film will capture the huge audience that Passion and other blockbuster religious films have, as it is basically a made-for-TV movie, but otherwise Fox is likely to make some big bucks with this venture, which some might see as purely exploitative. ...

*Correction: Fox has stated that they will not be making any of the 12 films. They will only be distributing them on home video under the FoxFaith banner.
