Five Ideas for the New 'Deadpool' Scribes

Filed under: Action », Comedy », Deals », Fandom », Scripts », 20th Century Fox », Newsstand », Comic/Superhero/Geek », Remakes and Sequels »

Last month, CHUD broke the news that Zombieland scribes Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick might just be lending their raunchy talents to Deadpool. It's now been confirmed by trades like Variety, so happy day, Deadpool might actually be snarky. It might actually be good. We can't get our hopes up, of course, but it's a nice start to the spin-off.

If you aspire to screenwriting, you have to envy Reese and Wernick a little. When it comes to comic adaptations you can't really get any easier than the Merc with a Mouth. You can pretty much go through his solo series and pull out a bunch of great lines, give him some mercenaries to slice up, and have a pretty enjoyable film on your hands.

But hey, we are talking about a studio that often gets very confused when it comes to their comic book characters. No one really thought they could mess up Wolverine, but they did. No one thought they could make the Dark Phoenix storyline absolutely useless, but they did. So, I thought I could help out Reese, Wernick and Fox by picking out five Deadpool ideas that they can just copy and paste into the movie. With butt jokes out of the way, Fox can rest and leave Reese and Wernick alone to craft a nice, tidy story that undoes the mess of X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Please feel free to contribute your own ideas, and help the creative process along.

Magneto's Origin Movie Is Now 'X-Men: First Class'

Last week, Bryan Singer revealed he had signed on the dotted line, and was re-enrolling with Fox to direct X-Men: First Class. The response from fans has been mixed, ranging from "I don't like post-Superman Singer" to "Stupid X-Men!" to "Yay! X-Men!" It is tough to get excited about yet another prequel, though I try to look on the bright side when it comes to my favorite superhero team.

Singer caught up with THR's Heat Vision to drop the usual "I know what the story is, but I can't tell you" hints, but he did reveal that First Class had essentially absorbed Magneto's spin-off movie. "It's basically about the formation of the X-Men. How they began and the relationship between a young Xavier and a young Magneto ... This story would probably utilize some of the Magneto story because it deals with a young Magneto, so it might supersede that [origin movie] because this would explore that relationship between a young energetic professor and a disenfranchised victim of the Holocaust."

Ryan Condal is Adapting 'Queen and Country' For Fox

Filed under: Action », Thrillers », Deals », Scripts », 20th Century Fox », Newsstand », Comic/Superhero/Geek »

This story simultaneously has thrilled me, and left me ashamed. But let's start with the thrilling part first. Somewhere in all the many comics that are bought up and hoarded by studios big and small, Fox actually bought Greg Rucka's Queen and Country. What makes rather unbelievable is that Queen and Country isn't about a superhero, or manly monster hunter. It's a series centered around a woman who is an operative of the SIS, aka MI6. We're talking a lady James Bond. Since when has Hollywood thought that would fly?

Well, someone at Fox is brave enough to give an action heroine a chance. The studio has done more than option Rucka's comic, as The Hollywood Reporter says that they've hired Ryan Condal to bring Tara Chace to life. You couldn't ask for a better choice, as Condal has solid credentials at DC and Marvel, including a stint with Wonder Woman. Condal's Galahad script also landed on the Black List of awesome, unproduced work. So, Queen is getting the royal pre-production treatment, and should be able to lure in even more when the script is all ready and polished.

Now comes the shame -- I still haven't read Queen and Country, as I was waiting for it to wrap up, and then just completely forgot to pick it up. (I think I held it in my hand this year at ComicCon which makes me feel even worse.) I will rectify this immediately so I can howl with outrage or cheer with delight when they cast Tara Chace.

Not Again, You Damn Dirty Apes!

In a world where every franchise is getting "rebooted," it should come as no surprise that someone in Hollywood wants to revisit Planet of the Apes. After all, Tim Burton's attempt was unsatisfying, and what do you do when your remake failed to launch a franchise?

Devin Faraci of CHUD has the scoop on a Apes script that has been kicking around Fox for the last year. It's not a sequel of Burton's film, and it's not another remake of the original Planet, but it is a remake all the same: Conquest of the Planet of the Apes. It will, thankfully, have a smoother title: Genesis: Apes.

For those unfamiliar with the original, Conquest is a prequel. It's the story of Caesar,
the first talking ape, who led the revolution that caused apes to be the masters of human savages. And honestly, the new script is pretty intriguing and edgy. Set in modern day, Caesar is a genetic experiment gone cuddly. When the God-playing scientist discovers his intelligence and talent for speech, he takes him home to his wife, and they raise him as their child. Things go well until Caesar sees his mother attacked, and when he kills her attacker, he lands at an Ape Conservatory, where he's tortured by humans and rejected by his own kind. But he slowly wins over the latter, and you can guess where it goes from there. It's worth noting that Faraci really digs the politically-charged script, and argues that it's a perfect way to restart the series.

Frankly, Apes is a series I never warmed to -- and there's too many sci-fi stories I'd love to see on the big screen before bringing back an old one. But I don't want to be answering for the rest of you. Do you want an Apes origin story, and a whole new franchise?
