Cinematical Presents: Free Screening of CAVITE, with Filmmaker Q & A

Filed under: Drama », Foreign Language », Independent », Thrillers », Site Announcements », SXSW », Mystery & Suspense », Magnolia », Cinematical Indie »

This upcoming Monday evening (May 15) in New York City, Cinematical will be hosting a screening of Independent Spirit Award Winner Cavite, to be followed by a Q & A with filmmakers Ian Gamazon and Neill Dela Llana -- all lead by yours truly.  Maybe you saw Cavite at festivals such as SXSW or New Directors/New Films -- or maybe you heard everyone talking about it at said festivals, but didn't get a chance to catch it yourself. It's opening in selected markets at the end of this month, as the first feature to be released via Magnolia's Truly Indie initiative, and as excited as I am about all forms of alternative distribution, we at Cinematical wanted to do something to get the buzz rolling before the release. This is the first of what will hopefully be a series of screening events hosted under the auspices of Cinematical.

If you're in New York, we'd love to see you there. If you're interested in attending, please RSVP ASAP, sending plus +1 information, to karina AT weblogsinc DOT com. If you keep a blog, please include the URL -- there's limited space in our current location, so if demand provokes a seating crunch, we'll reserve space for those with the ability to spread the meme first. If you're not going to be in NYC on Monday, please feel free to forward this invitation to anyone who may be interested in attending. Info on the film, dragged over straight from the press release, follows after the jump; you can watch the trailer here.

News from Slackerwood: Recuperation Week

Filed under: News From Slackerwood »

Nearly everyone in Austin is recuperating from one aspect of SXSW or another, or from Spring Break. The hardcore film-festival survivors may not want to see another movie for at least a week, but everyone else might enjoy a nice relaxing movie in a theater or coffeehouse.
  • Free movies: Monkeywrench Books is showing one of my all-time favorites, Breaking Away, on Sunday 3/19 at 2 pm. Cafe Mundi is showing Murderball on Monday 3/20 at 8 pm. Ventana del Soul will screen Godzilla vs. Mothra on Monday at 7:30 pm. Rounders Pizzeria is showing two baseball movies on Tuesday 3/21: The Sandlot at 6:30 pm and Bull Durham at 8 pm.
  • After a sold-out screening a few weeks ago, Alamo is bringing Dildo Diaries back for a limited run. The South Lamar theater will show the documentary about Texas sex-toy laws nightly from Monday through Thursday, 3/20-23. I saw the movie earlier and while it didn't tell me much I didn't already know, I got a kick out of the scenes inside a toymaking factory. Also, the songs Annie Sprinkle sings over the closing credits are delightful.

News from Slackerwood: SXSW alternatives

If you're in Austin right now and you are a regular filmgoer, you are probably considering which SXSW films to see, since the festival starts tonight. Believe it or not, there are in fact a few non-SXSW events going on in Austin during the next week.
  • Alamo Drafthouse at Lake Creek is showing the new indie feature Threat tonight (3/10) at midnight. Filmmakers Matt Pizzolo and Katie Nisa will introduce the film.
  • Some Oscar-winning films are still playing in Austin, if you want to take the Academy's heavy-handed advice and see these movies in theaters. Capote is playing at Alamo on South Lamar, Arbor Great Hills, and Dobie. Walk the Line is still at Alamo Lake Creek. Syriana, Memoirs of a Geisha, and Good Night and Good Luck (which looks fabulous in a theater, even if it didn't win any Oscars) are playing at Barton Creek Square.
