Gary Oldman Joins "Iron Man 2"?

Filed under: Action », Casting », RumorMonger », Fandom », DIY/Filmmaking », Comic/Superhero/Geek », Remakes and Sequels »

Iron Man 2 has been filming all of three days, and no move by the cast or crew has gone undocumented by paparazzi or Jon Favreau. But that doesn't stop the rumor machine from flying. The latest is that Commissioner Gordon has jumped the DC- Warner Bros ship to make a visit to the Marvel Universe. (That's one hell of a crossover.)

IESB.net is reporting that Gary Oldman was seen on set today, though no one knows if he's actually playing a role or if he was just visiting. Oldman is currently filming Book of Eli in New Mexico so if it is a role, it can't be anything much more than a cameo.

Rumors abound that he's playing Howard Stark, Tony's father, which Tim Robbins denied all connection to a few weeks ago. But IESB has also heard that John Slattery of Mad Men fame is playing the Stark patriarch, which would honestly make a lot more sense.

So, stay tuned -- between Favreau and Just Jared, nothing is staying secret on the Iron Man 2 set for very long. Then again, not even the cast is privy to some of the mysteries. According to Favreau, Garry Shandling declared: "I can't wait to see the movie to see who I actually play." If he doesn't know, then we can't pretend to!

UPDATE: Oldman's long-time manager, Douglas Urbanski (or someone claiming to be Urbanski) has left a comment below stating the following: "
I am Gary Oldman's manager. He did not visit the set for Iron Man and there are currently no plans for him to appear in the film."

First Look: On Set for 'Iron Man 2'

Filed under: Action », Casting », Fandom », Newsstand », Comic/Superhero/Geek », Remakes and Sequels », Images »

With one of next year's biggest films now in production, the race was on yesterday to snag the first photos from the set of Iron Man 2. Director Jon Favreau spent a little time on Twitter, offering fans a glimpse of his director's chair and some warning sign, but what folks really wanted was a first look at the cast in character (and costume). Just Jared and SpoilerTV managed to snag some shots, all of which include Robert Downey Jr. (as Tony Stark), Gwyneth Paltrow (as Pepper Potts) and Don Cheadle (who replaced Terrence Howard as Col. James "Rhodey" Rhodes). Favreau also left this note on Twitter as day one of production wrapped up: "First day went great. I've never worked on a sequel before. It's like we picked up where we left off."

In addition to these new photos, IESB reports that comedian Garry Shandling (of all people) has not only been cast in the sequel, but he was also on set for the first day of shooting. They claim he's "a reporter or Senator or some sort" who pops up in a continuation of the final scene from the first Iron Man (when Stark proclaims, "I am Iron Man" and all that). Does that mean Iron Man 2 will literally pick up right where the last one left off? Seems so, especially since it looks like Downey Jr. is wearing the same shirt and tie from the final scene of the first film. Check out larger versions of the three images above down below. Iron Man 2 hits theaters on May 7, 2010.

AMPAS Event: Celebration of Comedy in Film with Judd Apatow, James L. Brooks and Larry Gelbart

Filed under: Comedy », Drama », Romance », Fandom », Scripts », Home Entertainment »

Friday night I got the opportunity to attend a talk with three of my writing heroes: "The Jack Oakie Celebration of Comedy in Film featuring Judd Apatow, James L. Brooks and Larry Gelbart." James L. Brooks is one of the major reasons I started writing. I saw Terms of Endearment when I was a little kid and sobbed like...that little kid in Terms of Endearment. I have seen Broadcast News fifty times, and consider it perhaps the finest romantic comedy ever written. As Good As It Gets is a modern classic, I loved I'll Do Anything, and even have a soft spot in my heart for Spanglish. Oh, plus The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Taxi, and the guy has been with The Simpsons from day one! No further questions, your honor.

Brooks' incredible skill of seamlessly blending laughter and heartbreak clearly made a huge influence on Judd Apatow (although from reading all the articles about him, you'd think Apatow invented the practice). Like Brooks, Apatow did a lot of television work (the classics Larry Sanders Show, Freaks and Geeks, and Undeclared), and lately he's written and directed two of the best film comedies of the decade -- The 40 Year-Old Virgin and Knocked Up.

Larry Gelbart wrote Tootsie (with Murray Schisgal) -- one of the greatest screenplays ever penned, comedy or otherwise. That script earned him an Oscar nomination, as did Oh God! He earned Emmy nominations for writing, producing, and directing episodes of the classic sitcom M*A*S*H, and his writing career spans more than 50 years.

These three dudes on one stage, plus little cameos from the likes of Garry Shandling, Leslie Mann, and Jonah Hill. It was quite a night. Apatow kicked off the evening by sharing that he had been in that very theater as a boy, to see Steven Spielberg's notorious flop 1941. "I thought this was about comedy," quipped Gelbart.

Bruce Willis Isn't the Only One Who Knows Animals

Filed under: Animation », Comedy », Casting », Family Films »

This is definitely one of the stranger follow-up stories I've found myself writing recently. I recently told you of Bruce Willis chatting with Sci Fi Wire about his voice-acting role in the upcoming CGI kiddie flick Over the Hedge, and how Willis feels particularly prepared for the part because he spent 10 years living in rural Idaho and thus knows something about wild animals. Well, apparently not wanting to be outdone by Mr. Willis, co-star Garry Shandling has also declared he shares a particular affinity with the animal he'll be voicing in Over the Hedge.

Shandling voices Verne the turtle, who according to Shandling has insecurity issues which cause his tail to twitch. While Shandling does not have a tail, he does understand the personal insecurity his turtle counterpart experiences. "I'm in show business. That happens to me every day." Not to be outdone by Verne's twitch tail, Shandling also admits sometimes his insecurity causes his own rear to tingle. "[The role] was not only made for me; it's what I've played my entire life." Shandling further says he thinks he may be more turtle-like than Verne, because "I was always coming in late, and Verne in the film seems to move faster than me."

Okay, so the "I'm in touch with my animal character" bit is actually somewhat amusing, and it's fun to read these actors half-jokingly explain why they're a good fit for whatever animal they were chosen to portray -- but I definitely do not need to know about Gary Shandling's tingling buttocks.
