Interview: 'District 9' Director Neill Blomkamp
Filed under: Sony », Interviews »

Neill Blomkamp isn't a name that most moviegoers know yet, but in a matter of days that's going to change dramatically. After an overwhelmingly positive reception at this year's San Diego Comic-Con, Blomkamp's directorial debut District 9 arrives in theaters with a wave of critical acclaim (not to mention word of mouth) pushing it towards becoming the possible sleeper hit of the summer. Needless to say, it doesn't hurt that the film was nurtured through production by Peter Jackson, but given the depth and substance of its engaging, thought-provoking sci-fi subject matter, District 9 seems destined to be a place that many people will soon visit.
The film stars newcomer Sharlto Copley as a South African social worker who finds himself caught up in a battle between the alien refugees and the military who plans to relocate them. Cinematical spoke to Blomkamp in the days after Comic-Con to discuss its reception, its conception, and everything in between. In addition to talking about th the film's weighty themes, Blomkamp talked about its many technical challenges, and reflected on what about it seems to strike a chord with moviegoers.
Cinematical: Maybe just to get started you can talk about how you conceived the structure of this, in particular the idea of combining a loosely scripted structure with a lot of improvisation.
'Wolverine's' Gavin Hood Denies Rumors and Defends Tom Rothman

One of the ongoing sentiments surrounding the leak of X-Men Origins: Wolverine was "Serves Fox and Tom Rothman right! Payback's a bitch!" No matter how you feel about Fox and Rothman, the leak wasn't what you should wish on anyone. Wolverine represents a lot of effort by a lot of people who aren't responsible for the sins of the Fox father. One person who's come out swinging in defense of Rothman is the man you might least expect: Wolverine's director, Gavin Hood. The Internet has been rife with rumors of riproaring fights, intervention by Richard Donner, and reshoots. In a video interview with THR's Risky Business, Hood shot back at the rumors:
"I am very fond of Tom [Rothman]. When we're in a room debating, he's a very forceful personality, I'm a fairly forceful personality ... we didn't always agree. We certainly never yelled at each other. Some of these fan sites have really been upsetting in that way. I have never had a stand-up argument with Tom Rothman. Never, ever, and nor has Tom with me, ever, and that is a fact. It's quite upsetting to see how these things sort of spiral. Did we discuss and debate, what stylistically I was going to bring to the movie, and his expectations, and my [expectations]? Of course, of course you do that, and I hope it makes the movie better. Nobody's trying to screw up the movie. I mean, there's this stupid notion out there that Tom Rothman wants to ruin the franchise. What? That's stupid ... This is a huge thing for the studio. Of course he doesn't want to ruin the franchise. Is he going to put a gun to his own head? He has a huge amount riding on this movie, as do I. There were disagreements, but I think they were handled with dignity and sincerity."
Radically Recut 'Wolverine' to Be Released
Filed under: Action », RumorMonger », Fandom », 20th Century Fox », Comic/Superhero/Geek », Remakes and Sequels », Summer Movies »
20th Century Fox has issued a press release stating that it plans to drastically "re-calibrate" the narrative of Gavin Hood's Tsotsi follow-up, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, while still maintaining its scheduled opening in theaters everywhere on May 1st."Look," said CEO Tom Rothman in a prepared statement, "[expletive] those weaselly little mother[expletive]ers that couldn't hold onto their [expletive]ing horses to see this film and pay to do so. This is our way of sticking it to the so-called 'fans' who managed to show up for three of these flicks and purported to be willing to show up for this one, even though the last one was a total piece of [expletive]."
Directing duties on the new footage have been split between three helmers: actor Liev Schreiber has reportedly filmed a nineteen-minute tracking shot that has each and every member of the project's cast and crew extending their middle fingers towards the camera (save for Ryan Reynolds, already occupied by preparations on Julie Taymor's The Proposal: The Musical).
Final 'X-Men: Origins Wolverine' Trailer Online!

Here it is, the final X-Men Origins: Wolverine trailer you will ever see, courtesy of USA Today. There's some new character shots too, and all is collected here for your viewing pleasure. Unfortunately, the trailer embed ridiculously tiny, so you'll want to play it full screen for all the explosive, SNIKT-y goodness.
The final trailer isn't radically different than the first one, except that it's bigger, louder, gives a lot a way and yet manages to be more confusing. There's more Deadpool (who goes from Ryan Reynolds to the freaky man glimpsed in the action figure) and more Cyclops. I am completely thrown as to how young Scott Summers fits in, and this trailer really makes it seem as though the entire plot revolves around him. I'm at a loss. But I am happy to see there's hints that Logan's choices may not have been so very free. Still ... Cyclops?!
If you don't like it, blame Hugh Jackman, who's taking full responsibility for this film as its producer: "[I wanted] to own up to the responsibility of this character. I wanted to put myself into this movie in every way possible. This is the movie that I've seen in my head for a long time." He's also determined to make the character badass again, because he just doesn't care for the way he's been portrayed so far. "I'm not mad about it, but I thought he had gotten a bit soft. I thought we had gotten away from the essence of who Wolverine really is: a bad (dude) who wants to live his own life." Who knew it was so chock full of mutant friends ... ?

'X-Men Origins: Wolverine' TV Spot #3
Filed under: 20th Century Fox », Newsstand », Movie Marketing », Comic/Superhero/Geek », Remakes and Sequels », Trailers and Clips »
I do like all the shots of Wolverine looking bewildered by his admantium claws, though. (Oh, that macho man -- he doesn't even wince when they're new.) That shot of him looking in his bathroom mirror is kind of interesting. I complained in the Geek Beat about spoilers, but perhaps I was hasty, as I don't see how this Wolverine is going to end up poor, cage fighting and missing his memories. Surprises still await, I guess.
Check out Wolverine television spot #1, and television spot #2 to make your final judgment on whether or not you'll be seeing X-Men Origins: Wolverine in theaters on May 1.
'X-Men Origins: Wolverine' Television Spot #2

The second X-Men Origins: Wolverine spot has aired, and if you want to steer clear of spoilers, don't watch. Given that the film supposedly runs well under 2 hours, these 3 minute spots may just leave us little to see on May 1.
They're definitely giving Wolverine a whole new origin with this film -- as loyal fangirl, I'm of mixed opinion on that. The logical side says that his comic origin has become too cluttered and convoluted to every put onscreen, and that cherry-picking the best origin stories is the ideal solution. But of all the stories to cement, why choose Wolverine's aristocratic background? Of all the things to change, why alter his connection to Sabretooth and participation in Weapon X? (I know what they said in X2 -- and I maintain that they should have just kept that as a nasty little lie from William Stryker.)
However, it looks like they are making a tidier resolution of the Team X storylines, and I'm digging all the war and romance. Poor, poor Silver Fox.
Where You Can See 'Wolverine' -- It Ain't At WonderCon, Bub
Filed under: Action », 20th Century Fox », Newsstand », Movie Marketing », Comic/Superhero/Geek », Remakes and Sequels », Images », Trailers and Clips »
The WonderCon Film/Television panel was announced this week, and though it's the last major comic-con to bow before May, a panel for the X-Men Origins: Wolverine was conspicuously absent. It's a shocker to see such a major comic character skip the geek circut, as he was absent from NYCC too. But, that might be because the Ol' Canucklehead is going directly to the people. According to an official missive from 20th Century Fox, 3 60 second television spots will be airing over the course of 3 nights on -- where else? -- Fox.
The first spot will air Sunday, Feb. 15 during Family Guy (9:00-9:30 PM ET/PT); the second on Monday, Feb. 16 during House (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT); and the third will air Tuesday, Feb. 17 during American Idol (8:00-10:00 PM ET/PT). Check your local listings and set your DVR/TIVO. All three will be online come Tuesday night, and you can bet we'll post them here on Cinematical -- and you might just want to watch them from us, since they'll form one continious narrative that will be a lot more fun in one three minute chunk.
Along with the announcement comes some new photos, handed out to ComingSoon.net, JoBlo, IGN, and Latino Review. We've added them to our gallery below, but be sure to go visit those sites and say something nice.
'Wolverine' Reshoots Giving Deadpool and Beak Extra Screen Time

It seems to me that you can probably trust Hugh Jackman -- when he told AICN that the reshoots were centered on other actors, he was right ... although you could argue that beefing up characters and adding scenes is pretty extensive stuff after all.IESB.net reports that the X-Men Origin: Wolverine reshoots revolve around Deadpool, and that Ryan Reynolds was up in Vancouver shooting additional scenes between Deadpool and Wolverine. Details are scarce, so that's easily something that can fit under Jackman's explanation of "schedule conflicts and weather problems," it could mean that they liked Reynolds' Deadpool so much they wanted more, or it could be some story issues. Who knows.
PopWrap caught up with Dominic Monaghan, who revealed that his casting was practically an overnight offer. Monaghan only filmed for nine days, and is also one of the actors up in Vancouver for reshoots, and confirmed there were new scenes being added to the film. "We're doing a bit of both, more than anything else, it's an additional scene which I would get shot in the head if I told you anything about. But my character features in a huge set piece with Hugh and Liev [Schreiber]. I think the best thing I can tell you is that it's a flashback scene."
So there you are -- these reshoots may be a sign of hope or disaster, but one thing they mean is that you will get more Deadpool and Beak in the film.
Hugh Jackman Reaches Out Via AICN, Attaches Photo

The enhanced senses of Wolverine were tingling thanks to all of us talking about those "extensive" reshoots. They were tingling so much that his real life counterpart Hugh Jackman actually e-mailed Harry Knowles at Ain't It Cool News to clarify what was going on with X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and sent a photo that includes Deadpool, which I've added to our gallery below. Here's Jackman's e-mail in its entirety, for your reading pleasure:
"Hey Mate- Would you mind posting this? Thank you for your support! HJ
Hey everyone -
It's Hugh Jackman, sending this note from freezing Vancouver. I have read a lot of your online comments regarding the footage that we are currently shooting and I share your passion for the Wolverine character and the movie - I owe it all to you guys!
I wanted to reach out and let you know that due to scheduling conflicts with certain cast members and location/weather considerations, we had to wait until now to shoot a couple of scenes. Please rest assured that WOLVERINE will be badass and hopefully meet all of your expectations. I am stoked by the positive response to the teaser, which clearly reflects the tone and scope of the film. If you like that, we've got much more in store!
In the meantime, here's an exclusive shot of some characters you may recognize ...
Cheers,
Hugh."
So, they apparently aren't that extensive, but the usual type of pick-up shots, and we must continue to hope that Gavin Hood's vision wasn't crushed under the studio heel. In the meantime, I'm going to go giggle over the fact that Jackman's e-mail is apparently "fox.com," and then sulk because he doesn't e-mail me. Maybe I should play harder to get.
Extensive 'Wolverine' Reshoots Taking Place

Get sick for a few days and your sense of news goes out the window. I read this on Collider, thought "Wow!" and then reread it everywhere else before my memory was jogged to remember to share it with you fine people. I apologize. Blame the fever. So, according to Collider, there are extensive reshoots happening on X-Men Origins: Wolverine. (Which explains why Hugh Jackman and Liev Schreiber are still sporting muttonchops in public.) Fox is actually very proud of these reshoots and might even invite a bunch of journalists to come and cover them in order to show that they're truly working their asses off for a cool Wolverine movie, and to prove they've smoothed things over with director Gavin Hood. Hood is helming all reshoots, and the rumors are that he's finally getting to realize his version of the movie. Rumors have been rampant that Fox interfered with Hood's dark and gritty plans, even to the petty point of repainting sets when he wasn't around.
As Collider sagely points out, Fox is desperately in need of a blockbuster and some really good press. They've been the geek whipping studio for years, and the Watchmen legal battle didn't help. That's not even factoring in their horrible reputation within the industry for making directors miserable, and running off talent. Wolverine could just be the first step at turning all of that around ... and would be the perfect movie to spend some of that Watchmen money on. Do whatever you have to, Fox -- but do right by my Canadian badass so that I can sing your praises for years to come.
