My favorite starting point, DVD Journal, has ceased publication, though they've added a plethora of fan mail to their front page. What I liked about their Release Calendar was the stunning simplicity -- just the title, in alphabetical order, sometimes with the original release date. My pick of the week is Ken Loach's The Wind That Shakes the Barley. Cillian Murphy stars as an aspiring doctor in 1920s Ireland who gets caught up in his country's struggles against England. Cinematical's James Rocchi says it has "all the suspense of a wartime film -- ambushes, clever plots, daring escapes -- but it also has a kind of gut-punch realism that's hard to shake ... in many ways it's a film that best demonstrates what makes [Loach] one of our greatest living directors." I can't find details on any extra features for the Region 1 disk. A two-disk special edition is available for those able to play Region 2 DVDs.

In Ryan Stewart's review of Stephanie Daley, he says the lack of a clear answer for the actions of a teenage girl who suffocates her newborn child is 'dramatically intriguing up to a point, but also frustrating.' I wasn't sure I wanted to watch this drama, but after reading his review again, I'm sufficiently curious to add it to my rental list. This is another DVD where I can't find any suggestion of additional features.

Georgia Rule sounds like it would appeal to indie film fans, with its cast including Jane Fonda and Felicity Huffman, but Jette Kernion says: "It's difficult to become absorbed in a story about characters with little personality and no complexity." These titles aside, I'll be hitting my local rental shop to see if they have the Korean action film City of Violence and/or the Japanese sports flick Ping Pong, both of which sound promising.

Or, alternatively, which do you think would make more money at the theater: I Know Who Killed Me or Lindsay Lohan talking to Larry King for an hour? In case you've just woken up and Cinematical is the first thing you're reading today (if so, we're honored -- thanks!), La Lohan was once again arrested in the wee hours of the morning and charged with a number of things, including drunken driving and cocaine possession. Apparently, the cops were called when the mother of Lohan's former personal assistant found her vehicle being chased around a parking lot by Lohan. Just another day in the life, huh Linds? Her arrest comes only a couple days before her latest film, I Know Who Killed Me, is set to hit theaters. Since the marketing campaign for that film has been all but non-existent (has anyone even seen a TV spot?), there's a chance all this free publicity might turn out to be great for a film heading into the weekend with little to no buzz behind it.

Although something similar happened the week before Georgia Rule hit theaters (in that case, video of Lohan snorting coke had surfaced online), it did nothing to bolster that film's box office take. Then again, Georgia Rule wasn't very controversial and/or appetizing -- I guess some would call it a "chick flick." On the other hand, I Know Who Killed Me features Lohan playing a stripper -- it's a thriller -- and those attracted to her bad girl image might be more inclined to check it out after seeing her name splashed across the news all week. Keep in mind, each and every single story that mentions Lohan will, at some point, talk about I Know Who Killed Me. And although TriStar Pictures would never admit it, her getting arrested could be the best thing to happen to a little thriller lost amongst the hustle and bustle of this summer's bigger films. Here we go again. In the never-ending ping-pong match of rumors between Lindsay Lohan and the media, the actress is opening up about her "bad behaviour" on the set of Georgia Rule. This all started back during production of the "chick-friendly" family drama starring Lohan, Jane Fonda, and Felicity Huffman. Talk of an uneasy set and trips to the emergency room culminated in a public scolding of Lohan by producer James G. Robinson, who stated in a letter that Lohan had "acted like a spoiled child and in doing so have alienated many of your co-workers and endangered the quality" of "Georgia Rule.' Lohan recently spoke with Allure saying, "It upset me because I was a bit irresponsible. I didn't think about the consequences, but I was also going through something in my life."

But at the time, like most of Lohan's unflattering PR, the actress kept relatively quiet about the whole thing and had returned to work quietly to finish the film. And the results? Reactions to the film weren't great, and while it was not a break-out success, I think everyone managed to walk away with their dignity intact. Lohan might have a chance of getting the gossip headlines out of her reviews, she seems to have redeemed herself with her upcoming thriller I Know Who Killed Me with Chris Sivertson . Already the director has been praising her work -- which was never really the problem, and more importantly her work ethic. So far, there has only been a few glimpses of a poster and some photos. Set for release in July, hopefully Lohan can keep herself out of the headlines until then.

It never fails to amaze me that despite the huge amount of public attention that Lindsay Lohan gets, very little of it actually has anything to do with her talent -- unless you count getting caught on security cameras with allegedly illicit substances a talent. But the director of her latest film, I Know Who Killed Me, is singing her praises on Bloody Disgusting. BD spoke with director Chris Sivertson, and he was eager to describe his working relationship with Lohan, saying, "Lindsay and I hit it off right away. It's fantastic to work with somebody that gifted. Her dual roles in the film were extremely demanding - both physically and emotionally and she pulled it all off with true style" -- a definite change from the last opinion voiced about Lohan's work ethic. Some highlights from Lohan's commitment issues of late include her dropping out of the Dylan Thomas biopic The Best Time of Our Lives, and then being replaced by Jessica Biel in A Woman of No Importance (although in a strange twist, both parts eventually went to Sienna Miller).

I Know centers on a young woman who is abducted and murdered by a brutal serial killer, only to show up in a hospital claiming that she is not who they think she is. The film, which also features Julia Ormond and Neil McDonough, is set to open July 27th, which seems like a strange date to pick since it is also when The Simpsons Movie hits theaters, but I guess they aren't competing for the same audiences. When it comes to Lohan's tabloid history, hopefully her talent will outlive her notoriety, and then comments like Sivertson's won't come as such a surprise.

Unless you've been cooped up David Blaine-like in a box somewhere, you know that last week Spider-Man 3 finished first, shattering the box-office record with a $151 million opening. Given the inevitability of No. 1, you'd think all our predictors would knock this one out of the park -- but no one ended up with a perfect prediction. Here's how the box office top five shook down:

3. Fracture - $3.4 million
4. The Invisible - $3.1 million
5. Next - $2.8 million

Of course, I threw the whole thing to make you guys look good; as a wise man once said, everything I do, I do it for you. But seriously, since there's nothing I can say about Spidey that hasn't already been said, I'll put this out there instead: What ... is the deal ... with Disturbia? Have that many people never heard of Rear Window? Does Shia LaBeouf really have that many fans? Or is everything else out there just that unappealing? OK. Letting it go now. I promise.

28 Weeks Later
What It's About: In this follow-up to Danny Boyle's zombie thriller 28 Days Later, survivors return to London only to face the aftermath of the rage virus: paranoia, betrayal, cowardice, people eating each other. Good times.
Why It Might Do Well: 28 Days Later was a sleeper hit, earning $45 million domestically, and reviews for this one have generally been positive. C'mon, who doesn't love zombies?
Why It Might Not Do Well: Most of its target audience will be seeing Spider-Man 3 this weekend, and this feels like the umpteenth horror movie to come out in 2007.
Prediction: $15 million

Well it's a new day and, yes, Lindsay Lohan has apparently dropped out of another movie. For those of you keeping count at home, this marks the fourth film La Lohan has bailed on in the past year. Life&Style Weekly claims to have the exclusive scoop, saying Lohan passed on The Best Times of Our Lives (which was to begin production next week) because she wasn't happy with changes that were being made to her contract. While it's the fourth film she's bolted from, this is the first time the whole "shady contract" reason was given.

In the past, Lohan has ditched a project because she's either been "too busy" or "not interested in working with anyone who isn't a big name director." Oh, and she did have to take a brief hiatus from a project due to a stint in rehab -- but before that, folks on the set of Georgia Rule were pissed that the girl was showing up late or, in some "heat exhaustion" cases, not showing up at all. If you or I were to pull these kinds of stunts at our jobs, we'd be fired in an instant. But, see, in Hollywood the rules are reversed -- the more drama you cause, the more people write about you and, subsequently, the more people show up to watch you on the big screen. See, it's the little things that make the entertainment industry so damn special.

It's probably best that La Lohan dropped out, as I could not see her in this role at all. Based on the real-life story of a night in the life of poet Dylan Thomas, Lohan was supposed to star alongside Keira Knightley, Cillian Murphy and Matthew Rhys. This isn't to say Lohan's appearance would have cheapened what, essentially, looks like a pretty interesting film -- well, okay, I guess I am saying that. Here's hoping they find an adequate replacement on such short notice, or else The Best Times of Our Lives might turn into The Worst Production of the Year.

Following the newly-released trailer, a new one-sheet and a few pics have surfaced for Universal's upcoming Georgia Rule, featuring Jane Fonda, Felicity Huffman and Lindsay Lohan, as herself. Okay, so Lohan isn't exactly playing herself, but she will be taking on the role of a rebellious, uncontrollable teenager -- which, as we all know, isn't too much of a stretch for the young actress. Definitely not as controversial as the last set of pics (let's just say La Lohan was searching for something between the legs of her on-screen boyfriend), these new images show us the three ladies in a variety of dysfunctional poses.

Directed by the family-friendly Garry Marshall (who hasn't helmed an R-rated movie since 1994's Exit to Eden), Georgia Rule revolves around three women (grandma, mother and daughter) who must find a way to reconcile their differences and come to terms with the secrets of their family's past when an accident forces all three to live under the same roof. It's a bit more risque than Marshall's last directorial effort, The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, but keep in mind this is the same guy who also brought us Pretty Woman and -- one of my personal favorites -- The Flamingo Kid. Heck, if Marshall can create a lovable, charismatic, girl-next-door prostitute, I'm sure he'll do wonders with Lohan. With a script written by Mark Andrus (who's quite familiar with females and family, having penned the adaptation of Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood), Georgia Rule hits theaters on May 11.

While it might have seemed like Georgia Rule was going to fall under the whims of La Lohan, it's actually all wrapped up in a pretty trailer bow that has just been released exclusively to Moviefone. If you kept even half an eye on movies news and gossip last summer, you should remember all the troubles that Lindsay Lohan had with the Garry Marshall film. First, cavorting around as a big-city nymphette in the film made the poor redhead collapse with heatstroke. Or rather, partying like a wild child did, sending producer James Robinson into outrage, inspiring him to write a letter that said: "We are well aware that your ongoing all night heavy partying is the real reason for your so called 'exhaustion'. We refuse to accept bogus excuses for your behavior."

Nevertheless, the movie wrapped and we get to see Jane Fonda on the screen once again. The premise sounds typical for a movie, but man, I wish it was true. Rule follows Rachel (Lohan), an uncontrollable teen who is brought to her grandmother's house by her dysfunctional mother Lilly, played by Felicity Huffman. There, she has to live under Grandma Georgia's rules, and exist in a small, Mormon Idaho town. If only movies were real, and Lindsay actually had to do this! The trailer has all the key bits of comedic melodrama -- the love interests, finding the error of your ways, so on and so forth. If you watch carefully, you'll even see that the thicker-in-the-face blonde man who gets beaten with the bat is none other than Cary Elwes, so if Lohan getting paid to be herself is not enough for you, at least there is some Wesley in the mix!

So it seems that Erik isn't the only one who thinks that Cary Elwes is kind of creepy. Elwes, who will probably be forever cursed with people shouting "As You Wish!" at him in the streets, has made career choices that were a far cry from the soft and fuzzy Wesley. It probably started with Kiss the Girls and was cemented by him sawing his own foot off in the original Saw. Upcoming roles for Elwes include a pedophile in Georgia Rule with tabloid staple Lindsay Lohan and an unnamed part in Dean Paras' action film Sakura: Blue Eyed Samurai.

Variety announced that Elwes has signed on for the psychological thriller Psych 9 for International Production Co. (co-producers of Hostel) and Green Card Pictures. The film also stars Michael Biehn, Sara Foster, and Gabriel Mann. Directed by Andrew Shortell, the film revolves around a young woman who takes a night job in the record office of a recently closed psychiatric hospital. Of course, she begins to experience strange events that might be connected to a series of gruesome murders.

Psych 9 is currently wrapping up in Prague, but a release date hasn't been finalized. Until then we'll have to settle for Elwes' work in what appears to be the painfully unfunny Pucked for the National Lampoon franchise; now, that looks like a scary movie.

With the overblown media attention given to the Tom Cruise/Paramount story, some outlets have been running pieces on current celebrity behavior in general. Mostly there's been the tying in of Mel Gibson's arrest and anti-semitic rant and of Lindsay Lohan's warning memo from Morgan Creek. For anyone to be asking, "what is up with Hollywood?" seems to be stretching three incidents pretty thin to cover the entire industry, but, hey, when does the media worry about their generalizations?

Anyway, of all the people to chime in on the issue of actor etiquette, William H. Macy and his wife, Felicity Huffman, are probably the most random. But they have each worked with Lohan recently and must have had a discussion about the difficulties of working with her. Macy co-stars with her in Bobby and Huffman saw the whole Morgan Creek events first-hand by co-starring in Georgia Rule. According to CelebrityWeek.com, Macy is speaking out about Lohan, saying that she and anyone behaving like her should be fired. He also said they should, "have their asses kicked." As for Huffman, she apparently speaks highly of the actress' talents, but agrees that she is, "very, very disrespectful."

I guess if she couldn't act and behaved inappropriately then she really would have no reason to be cast, but behavior has never been a priority over talent in the movie biz. There have been problems with stars since the beginning of Hollywood. Often it is the best actors and actresses who are known for being erratic, reckless, drugged or something else. I guess Macy and Huffman are just unique in that they are great and perfect, too.
