Jackie Earle Haley Denies Sinestro Talks
Filed under: Action », Sci-Fi & Fantasy », Casting », Warner Brothers », RumorMonger », Newsstand », Comic/Superhero/Geek »
You can't keep a good actor out of the comic book flicks. Jackie Earle Haley already has one of the most iconic DC characters notched on his belt, but rumor has it that he might get to pick up another. As you may have read earlier, Ain't It Cool News was reporting that Martin Campbell is in the process of finalizing his cast for The Green Lantern, and that Haley is at the head of the line to play Sinestro.Haley has told Collider that no one has approached him about the part, and that he hasn't been screen tested ... but that doesn't mean he won't be. Haley suggested the Internet generally hears things before he does. "You guys are out in front of it and I don't know anything about it yet. If something comes up I'll let you know."
Even as rumor and guesswork, it's an intriguing possibility. Haley certainly has the villainous chops to pull off Sinestro, and Watchmen proved he had the physical chops. I've always pictured someone British in the role, though, and the best fan suggestion I've seen yet is Daniel Day-Lewis. I doubt the Method actor would ever delve into the world of DC Comics, but oh how wonderful it would be if he'd bring a bit of Daniel Plainview into the Green Lantern Corps.
The Cast of Characters to Be Cast in 'The Green Lantern'

The pre-production world of The Green Lantern went rather quiet after Ryan Reynolds landed the titular role. No one else has been cast, and the biggest news to follow Reynolds was that the filming had moved from Australia to New Orleans, thanks to the rising Australian currency. But SpoilerTV has landed the open casting sheet which reveals just who we can expect to see alongside the Emerald Knight. The lead female character will be Carol Ferris, who is described as "26-32, a smart and attractive woman with an MBA. She started as a pilot and now runs Ferris Aircraft. She is a work-a-holic." That's not straying too far from the comics, as Ferris was the Vice President of her father's company, and was responsible for hiring the handsome Hal Jordan. Naturally, they fell in love but things became rather problematic when she became the villainous Star Sapphire. You might just be seeing the origins of a sequel here.
Next up is Dr. Hector Hammond, "27-35, Character actor who is austere and impersonal, he is real "scummy." He is a pathologist and also the son of a Senator." Hammond is definitely getting a movie makeover, as he's just a petty criminal in the books. Being a comic book, he naturally stumbles upon radiation and uses it for his own moneygrubbing ends, and jumps into supervillain status.
Sinestro is a given, since he's assigned to be Hal's mentor once Jordan joins the Green Lantern Corps. But with a name like Sinestro, you know he isn't going to be a gentle Obi-Wan Kenobi type. I won't get into details, but it's amusing to read what his big screen appearence may be: "Mid-30s to Mid-40s, he is smart, tough, intimidating and in great physical shape." (He was based on David Niven! Intelligent, intimidating sure -- but ripped?)

Hal Jordan Will Have a New Lantern To Hang With

I'm reaching a point that I don't even want to report on The Green Lantern because its casting and script rumors just haven't reached a satisfying end, despite having a director, a shooting location, and a start date. Nevertheless, Marc Guggenheim is always dropping a few interesting tidbits when he talks about the Lantern script. The MTV Splash Page was the latest to catch up with him, and he tried to put worried fans to rest by clarifying just what his latest script revisions were. "It's basically the exercise of changing the movie from being just a script that people are reading to being a script that people will actually shoot, perform and produce." He stressed again to pay no attention to casting rumors, even when they're as ruggedly handsome and popular as Bradley Cooper.
But here's the part you Lantern fans will find the most interesting. Guggenheim wouldn't comment on which faces of the Green Lantern Corps will appear in the film, but you will see familiar ones. "One of our rules has been: 'Don't create a new Lantern when a pre-existing one from the comic books would work just as well. There's only one Lantern who we've decided to completely create from scratch, but there's a very specific reason why we've made that decision." Speculate away, my friends, and start those Kilowog petitions now.
Geek Daily: Quotes From 'Green Lantern', 'Priest', 'We3' and 'Thor'

First, let's talk The Green Lantern -- or rather, read what Marc Guggenheim told Sci Fi Wire about it. He assures fans that the film is moving forward, and that he's written yet another draft of its screenplay. "You know I really can't [say anything]. I've sworn a blood oath of secrecy in relation to the project. But, you know, the thing I can tell you is that it is a very loving and respectful approach. The goal here is to do the best cinematic representation of the Green Lantern character. You know, there's no desire on anyone's part to completely change the character and just call this other character Green Lantern and try to ... draft off the name recognition. This is all about 'How do we bring the best version of this character to the silver screen?'"
SciFi Wire also caught up with Don Murphy for a We3 update. John Stevenson is still attached, the script is done, and now they're just looking for a studio that'll give it a home. "We're working with a director named John Stevenson. Don't be confused, though. Even though he directed Kung Fu Panda, the movie's going to be live action. It's going to be a combination CG, puppetry [and] real animals. We have a great script, a great director, and we're trying to figure out who's going to pay for it in this marketplace, but we're looking."
Will Bradley Cooper Be The Green Lantern?

The waiting game on The Green Lantern has been kind of agonizing. While they have confirmed Martin Campbell as director a dozen times, as well as its shooting location in Australia, we still don't know who will wield the ring. (But we know who wants to -- right Brian Austin Green?)Drew McWeeny over at HitFix is exclusively reporting that the choice may be made -- and it might be the handsome and funny Bradley Cooper. The Hangover star is poised to be a breakout star of the summer, and becoming the Emerald Knight would pretty much launch him into superstar territory.
McWeeny stresses that nothing is official yet, and that Campbell likes to look at and screen test a lot of actors before making his choice. "But the process is far enough along that this is more than just a meeting or some spot on a wish list ... But with the film set to shoot later this summer, they've got to start making their choices, and now's the time to put people in front of the camera and see who really works in the suit. I'm not a betting man, but if I were, I would bet that Cooper's going to be the guy."
So DC and Lantern fans, what do you think of Cooper as Hal Jordan? He's got the look and he has a lot of rakish charm that's neccessary for a test pilot. Does he have that special something that would make Abin Sur bestow the ring on him?
The Light of the Green Lantern -- Conceptually, Anyway

The Green Lantern movie seems to be creeping very slowly to the pre-production line, but at least it isn't dead. You probably remember that we had a tiny update back in June that it was happily shaping up into a proper origin movie, rather than a slapstick version starring Jack Black. Now, courtesy of illustrator Brian Murray, comes concept art he created for scriptwriter (and potential director) Greg Berlanti. This art helped seal the deal, and win the franchise for Berlanti Television. A glance through the gallery below tells you why -- it's exciting and cinematic, the kind of thing your mind starts filling in and speeding up. If this is what is floating around at Warner Bros, Green Lantern could be shaping up to be something on par with Iron Man. But my desperation to talk about another DC character other than Batman may be showing. The diehard Lantern fans may have a different take than I -- is this the look of Hal Jordan to you?

'Green Lantern' Inching Closer to Green Light?

Finally, some good news for all those DC fans! Producer Donald DeLine talked to the boys of CHUD about the long languishing Green Lantern film. While nothing has kicked into high-gear yet, the future is bright for Hal Jordan.DeLine confirmed that Jack Black is no longer attached to the lead role, which should make all fans sigh with relief. And it is no longer being touted as a comedic movie. Isn't it nice when Hollywood wakes up and realizes they've wasted time on a really dumb idea?
They are currently awaiting the first draft of a script by Greg Berlanti, which DeLine was hopeful would be on his desk very soon. They are looking to make it a sensible origin story of Hal Jordan, with all the heroics and aliens the story requires. Okay, I'm guessing on the alien part, but I don't really see them changing that.
Nor has the death of Justice League Mortal affected this Green Lantern movie -- as seems to be the case with all the Justice League characters, since they were operating on completely different wavelengths.
Jack Black Says No Green Lantern
As I have mentioned previously, there is a large poster of Hal Jordan era Green Lantern gracing the wall of my study. Although my primary love for comic books has always and will always reside with Marvel, there is a distinct soft spot in my heart for Green Lantern. I also think several DC comic characters have very strong movie potential, and have thus typically rejoiced when the possibility of a Green Lantern movie gets mentioned. However, there is one large and glaring exception to my eagerness for such a film, and it rests in the person of Jack Black. For reasons which truly baffle my feeble little mind, Black has persisted in his interest to put together a ridiculous, farcical Green Lantern movie. Thankfully, when early news of such a script got out, the fans rose up and with one voice proclaimed "get your hands off of the Green Lantern, Jack." And they proclaimed it loud enough that Black got the message. Yes, Jack Black recently admitted such a script did exist, but the very negative reaction from fans everywhere put a stop to any thoughts of making it a reality. So congratulations to you, fans -- you have stopped a great travesty. I like to think we here at Cinematical contributed in some small way to stopping this catastrophe thanks to all of you who shared your comments on the prospect when it floated past the first time. Well played, readers.
Jack Black Still Wants Green Lantern
This continues to be a very, very strange association in my mind. Jack Black is a funny man, and I actually enjoy him as an actor. The Green Lantern is a great super hero, and there's a giant poster of golden age Green Lantern gracing the wall of my study. So to sum of these brief thoughts: I like Jack Black. I like the Green Lantern. So why am I so afraid of the two of them joined together? The best explanation I can think of is another example. I love dill pickles. I also love death by chocolate ice cream. Under no circumstances would I ever want my dbc served with dill pickle topping. Two delightful experiences, but delightful for separate reasons which do not easily overlap. And yet, Jack Black persists in being interested in a Green Lantern movie project. He was recently giving a radio interview, and mentioned that he'd still like to earn the project a green light (green light for Green Lantern, oh I'm SO clever I should write headlines for the NY Times). According to Superhero Hype, Black is still trying to get a developed script and apparently still has at least some interest maintained over at Warner Brothers. My hope for seeing a GL movie is confused and tainted by my fear of Jack Black being involved. What to do, what to do?
