What's Old Is Not New Again

Johnny Depp in Pirates of the CaribbeanWell friends, if you ever needed more evidence that Hollywood has completely run out of ideas, look no further than this week's new movies. Yep ... there's an Ocean's three-quel, a Hostel sequel and another freakin' penguin movie.

Just in case you've missed all the hype that these stars and the studio have been spewing forth ... George Clooney, Brad Pitt, the other 11 and a new one hit the screen this weekend in Ocean's Thirteen.

In this installment, Danny Ocean and his group of con men head back to Vegas try to pull off their most ambitious and riskiest heist yet. This time it's to take down a casino owner, played by Al Pacino, who snookered their mentor and friend played by Elliot Gould.

The Reel Deal: If you enjoy the caper movies and it just makes you feel good to keep padding these guys wallets...then party down with Oceans 13. It's a harmless enough movie ... not great, not horrible, but me? ... I like these guys individually but together they just seem like one big Smuggy McSmartypants, and this movie feels like Ocean's 113. For what it's worth, I took Hippie Assistant Matt (HAM) to see the movie, and he loved it. But I'm pretty sure he was baked, so there you go. He's in; I'm out.

'Hostel II' For Sale on L.A. Streetcorners

It looks like the DVD pirates have found their next big target. Movieweb is reporting that copies of Hostel Part II have already hit the streets for sale in Los Angeles. According to the first person account of an B. Alan Orange, he managed to snag a $5 studio-grade copy of the torture flick. The sequel to the 2005 film centers the action this time on a group of girls kidnapped and tortured in a remote European location. The movie is expected to be a big success, but could a few crappy street DVDs really hurt the opening weekend profits? Not to worry, Roth seems to lining up plenty of projects for the near future. Just today, Monika reported that the director was looking to expand on his Grindhouse trailer, Thanksgiving, as well as the slightly nutty concept film Trailer Trash - The Movie.

Hostel Part II is not the first high profile summer movie to have been hit by piracy. Just this May copies of Spiderman 3 were supposedly flooding the market before the film had its North American release. In the end, Sony released an official statement denying that copies had flooded the market in Beijing for $1 a piece. At least Roth can take solace in the fact that his was going for five. But it's not like Spiderman suffered at the Box Office and I think the same will hold true for fans of Roth's particular brand of horror. Law abiding citizens who want to see Hostel: Part II will just have to wait until June 8th.

Eli Roth Says Horror Movie Violence Should Have No Limits

Filed under: Horror », Fandom », Newsstand »

Gratuitous sex, unfathomable torture scenes and copious amounts of nudity are a recipe for an NC-17 rating and a nightmare for any horror film creator. Perhaps this is why Eli Roth -- the mind responsible for the very bloody and very violent Hostel films -- believes that there should be no rating system with the horror genre. In an interview with MTV, Roth said, "I'd love to see us get to a point where you can go to theaters and see movies unrated and that people know its not real violence. It's all pretend. It's all fake."

I have to agree. I personally don't believe in a rating system for film and television, although I wouldn't be the first person to want to see an eyeball being torn out of someones face during a gory flick. Roth longs for the day when "people realize movies don't cause violence." Obviously, there's a lot more than dismembered body parts behind the filmmaking of Eli Roth -- he has strong opinions (he believes all moviegoers should get their money back from Oceans Twelve) and currently only wishes to create films off his own stories rather than opting to take on $100 million budget films. Except, um, when it comes to Cell ... which isn't his story.

Luckily, he is part of a group dubbed the Splat Pack; folks like Quentin Tarantino, Rob Zombie and James Wan (Saw) are all there to support the horror film cause. The group's mission is to bring the bloodiest films back to the big screen and to support each other as they fight against the MPAA for a non NC-17 rating. (Monthly bake sales, optional.) So far so good; Hostel received an R rating, but the verdict is still out on Hostel Part II. We'll find out soon enough -- the film opens this summer on June 8. Roth makes one more good point: that maybe if we got used to seeing the "pretend" violence that eventually it wouldn't matter anymore. "I'd love to see us get to a point where you can make a movie and not worry about the limits of the violence. Then I think they'd get so violent that people would get bored of it."
