A New Poster For The Star Wars Comedy '5-25-77'

Filed under: Comedy », Sci-Fi & Fantasy », MGM », The Weinstein Co. », Movie Marketing », Comic/Superhero/Geek »

It's been awhile since we have had any news about Patrick Read Johnson's Star Wars comedy 5-25-77. Back in 2005, Karina had a look at the teaser trailer for the coming of age story about the ultimate fan. Well, here we are almost two years later and while there has been the trailer, a website and a promised release date of May 25th of this year, there hadn't been much news from the production; prompting questions about whether the film was going to make its promised release date. Fan Cinema Today wondered the same and actually got an answer -- sort of. The site received a sneak preview of the poster for the film with the promise of "More info to come...soon."

5-25-77 is inspired by an event from Johnson's own youth; in 1976 the teen filmmaker was invited to a rough screening of Star Wars at ILM. The movie is only loosely based on Johnson and instead focuses on the teen returning to his small town to become the film's number one fan. Since it's a coming of age comedy, there will probably be plenty of touching moments and comic obstacles peppered in amongst the nostalgia. If Johnson keeps to his release date, it might put the film in competition with MGM's Fanboys, but considering what Erik thought of the Fanboys trailer, 5-25-77 should have a fighting chance.

Star Wars: The Animated Series -- An Update

Filed under: Action », Animation », Sci-Fi & Fantasy », Fandom », Comic/Superhero/Geek », Remakes and Sequels »

Most Star Wars fans are probably still divided on whether the prequels were really a dignified end to the series, but rather than open up that can of worms again, we're probably better off focusing on something that most fans can agree on. Namely, that the 2003 animated series Clone Wars was required viewing for any Star Wars devotee. The last time we had news on Lucas's CG follow-up to the series was back in October, but now ILM animator Rob Coleman has managed to amp up the buzz factor even more.

Rebelscum.com got word of a video interview with Coleman at Imagina 2007; some of the highlights include confirmation that fifteen episodes are currently in various stages of production, and Coleman is on board to direct five of the first twenty-six episodes. So far, Lucasfilm has just about completed the first two episodes and Skywalker Ranch is handling all of the finishing touches. Coleman was enthusiastic about early screenings of the episodes saying, "They're looking fabulous, they're looking great..." and "Our stuff is incredible compared to what's out there...". There is no word on a network deal yet, but if Coleman is telling the truth, it doesn't look like it's going to be long before they find one.

ILM is in Demand

Man alive -- considering how much work George Lucas' Industrial Light and Magic is getting these days, it's a wonder any other effects houses can stay in business. Hot on the heels of its "Oh my God that tentacle-face is soooo realistic!" success with Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, the company has a packed slate of projects due to be released in the next 18 months or so. In addition to its continued status as effects overlord for the POTC and Harry Potter franchises, ILM is also at work on Paramount's The Spiderwick Chronicles (due out in December 2007), Eragon (December 2006), Evan Almighty and Transformers (both summer 2007). And, as an added bonus, the company seems to have become the go-to house for companies wishing to render 2-D films in three dimensions: After successfully converting Chicken Little earlier this year, ILM is now working on getting Tim Burton's wonderful The Nightmare Before Christmas ready for its 3-D Halloween re-release. And then they'll break for lunch.

Defining Unit of ILM Sold

Filed under: Deals », Tech Stuff », Newsstand »

Variety this morning reported the sad news that the now-underused physical production unit of Lucasfilm's Industrial Light and Magic is being sold off to Mark Anderson, a long-time ILM employee. While ILM will continue to exist and do copious effects work, the loss of the physical production unit is striking because it was that unit, and the models and miniatures it made for Star Wars, that put ILM on the map. According to Variety, though, "With the shift to digital effects, Lucasfilm has found it difficult to keep that portion of the company fully employed."

Under Anderson's guidance, the unit will be renamed Kerner Optical and will remain ILM's first choice for any work in which they specialize. In addition, Anderson hopes the new company will be able to "pick up the slack by seeking work that ILM would not get."

Transformers test footage?

There's really no way to know how real this is, but there's a short clip going around that claims to be a bit of ILM test footage - for the Transformers movie. Now, I'm familiar with the Transformers only from the cartoon that was on when I was a kid, which means I know much less about them and their universe than the people who have read all the comic series. And, as a result, my expectations are very basic: I want the movie to look cool, and not totally destroy my fond childhood memories of badass, weirdly dignified robots.

My point is that I'm probably easy to blow away, so my reaction to the clip should be taken with a grain of salt. All that said? HOLY FREAKING CRAP! THIS IS AMAZING! Go look immediately (the link is to Twitch's piece on the clip; I didn't want to send you straight to the download), then come back and give us your thoughts.
