Kevin Costner Joins Ivana Baquero in 'The New Daughter'

After exploring Pan's Labyrinth, Ivana Baquero decided to sign on for her first English-speaking role back in April, another thriller called The New Daughter. The project comes from a short story by John Connolly, and it was adapted by John Travis. Now, months later, they've got a director, Luiso Berdejo, and they've finally found her pops. It's... Kevin Costner? He's going to play a dude named John James -- "a single father who moves to a farm with his two kids after a painful divorce. Soon, his daughter (Baquero) starts behaving ominously, and Dad begins to suspect that the burial mound in a nearby field might have something to do with it." Pet Sematary and The Exorcist... For little children!Anyhow, I know that Baquero is talented; does this talent also already include pitch-perfect accents? Or did they live overseas until the divorce? Or maybe she was adopted right before the parental split and got the short end of the stick -- what with new families, divorce, and then some sort of demon possession. Costner is just about the last person I ever imagined for the role of Ivana's dad. Unless he is the one who needs a new accent. I don't know. Whatever the case, it should be interesting. The Upside of Anger is probably my favorite Costner role, at least, it's the first one I really liked him in, so I can only imagine what Baquero can bring out in him. Production is slated to begin next year.
'Pan's Labyrinth' Star Will Lead Horror-Thriller 'The New Daughter'

While we sometimes get foreign actors and actresses who can break out of their countries and make it big in the U.S., we don't often see the kids break out. Ivana Baquero is one beloved exception. The young girl wowed us with Pan's Labyrinth, including our Kim Voynar who said: "Baquero gives a spectacular performance as Ofelia; she is both brave and terrified, and turns those emotions on a dime without missing a beat." At 14, fresh off an award-winning, massively talked-about role, she's going to dive into her first English-speaking role. I guess there's no rest for the girl with wicked roles. The Hollywood Reporter has announced that for her first foray out of the Labyrinth, Baquero has signed on for the starring role in The New Daughter. It's a new film, a new language, but still a dark theme. Adapted by John Travis, the film comes from a short story in John Connolly's supernatural collection, Nocturnes. THR describes it as a story that covers "a single dad who has moved his two children to a remote farm where a strange mound in the surrounding fields appears to be the key to his daughter's increasingly ominous behavior." To add on from Connolly's own website, it is a burial mound that "hides something very ancient, and very much alive." So, Pet Sematary with the pets replaced by an impressive, young Spanish actress? The project doesn't have a director yet, but I can't blame them for signing Baquero, who will probably be perfect for the role.
