Live from SXSW: The Undeniable Coolness of Jeffrey Tambor

I've said it more than once: I don't like doing celebrity interviews. 9 times out of 10 you're not really there to interview them so much as you're there to help them sell their newest movie, and while those conversations can sometimes lead to some quality copy, it's more likely that you'll be stuck asking the same nine questions that 15 other entertainment writers just tossed out. And that makes for boring copy.

But when it comes to a celebrity like Jeffrey Tambor, who does NOT have a new movie coming out next week, I find it really hard to say no. Partially because I love actors like Mr. Tambor (and have been a fan of his since THE ROPERS, for cryin' out loud), but mainly because I think it's very interesting to chat with an actor about his/her entire body of work ... or at least a few random sections that I find most interesting. But ... this is not an interview piece. (Sorry.) I did spend about 15 minutes talking to Mr. Tambor about his films and the directors he's worked with, but I'm too busy to transcribe that piece right now.

And so I'll just tell you about the man's SXSW presentation itself. You're actually in luck, because Jeffrey Tambor's Acting Workshop was probably 19 times more fascinating than the brief Q&A session we shared. Easily one of the most popular "panels" I've ever attended at SXSW (and I've seen a bunch), the workshop was packed with hundreds of eager attendees. Mostly actors, of course, but also a lot of film critics, filmmakers, normal-joe badge-holders, and film / TV fans in general.

And to say that Jeffrey Tambor has a gift for public speaking is like saying the Titanic had a gift for unexpectedly submerging.

Jeffrey Tambor: 'Arrested Development' Movie is Happening

Filed under: Comedy », RumorMonger », Fandom »

I'll be honest: I never really believed the legend of the Arrested Development movie. It was made up just to torment me. I'd get all excited, and then the moment would never arrive; the project would simply peter out; we'd hear less and less about it until the blogosphere buzz became a distant memory.

I still can't get too invested in this. So much could go wrong. But in the spirit of commiseration with fellow AD-deprived fans, I share this news from a Collider interview with Jeffrey Tambor. Asked if he was growing tired of people demanding news about the Arrested Development movie project, Tambor replied: "Well no, because we're doing it." Oh snap! "We are going. It's a go. I actually just this week talked to Mitch Hurwitz, so we're doing it." No script or start date, but at the end of the interview he tells Collider's Steve Weintraub to "get your hopes up."

Oh, okay. Honestly, I rewatch episodes of the show as often as I can, and generally react with something like tears of awe (as well as laughter). Arrested Development is what genius looks like. Will we get to see it on the big screen? I'm not convinced, but I guess I'll start to get my hopes up.

Darko Entertainment Creates a 'Rogue's Gallery'

Filed under: Comedy », Casting »

If you were going to create a gallery of rogues, what actors and actresses would you include?

Personally, I'd throw some Christopher Walken in with some Lena Olin, Henry Rollins, Gary Oldman, perhaps some Lena Headey and Jackie Earle Haley ... just to name a few. But maybe I'm completely off because this is a different type of rogue. The Hollywood Reporter posts that Ving Rhames *, Ellen Barkin, Rob Corddry, Bob Odenkirk, Jeffrey Tambor, and Maggie Q have signed on for a new action comedy called Rogue's Gallery -- which already stars Joe Anderson, Odette Yustman, Adam Scott, and Emilie de Ravin.

Written by Brian Watanabe and Abe Levy, and directed by Fouad Mikati, the film focuses on "the battle that ensues among groups of government spy teams in an underground facility after their boss is assassinated." Are there that many spy teams? Do they then use their super spy skills to try and take the others down? The premise sounds like it could have promise.

The film is currently shooting in LA, but we can still dream of our own group of rogues. Who would make your list?

*Okay, he'd definitely make my rogue cut.

Tina Fey & Christopher Guest Want In on Ricky Gervais' 'Truth'!

Filed under: Comedy », Casting »

I was drawn into this whole story by the thought of Tina Fey, but be still my comedic heart, she's not the only one involved. As Jessica posted earlier this month, Ricky Gervais has a blog for his upcoming comedy, This Side of the Truth, and he's just announced the final casting. He writes in an entry: "We are trying to avoid the 'Hollywood actor look'. No botox, perma-tans, or unfeasibly white teeth..."

Who could that mean for casting? Well, there's a short little blip that says Tina Fey and Christopher Guest have signed on, along with Jeffrey Tambor and John Hodgman (The Daily Show). This flick sounded good, but now it's downright irresistible! While I would rather have Guest do more mockuwonders, I won't pass up the chance to see him reunite with Gervais, with a helping of Fey, Tambor, and Hodgman. And, we can't forget the already-cast players -- Louis CK, Rob Lowe, Jonah Hill, and Jennifer Garner.

Just the thought of these actors taking on Gervais's deceit-creating character... Are there any of you out there who are not itching to see this now?

'Superhero Movie' Trailer!

Filed under: Comedy », Trailers and Clips »

NOTE: You can find the new trailer right here.

It's been a while since I've seen a good spoof. I don't think that I've even bothered watching one since Scary Movie. So of course, a Leslie Nielson movie that doesn't have him playing President Harris makes me curious -- especially when he's playing Uncle Ben. A trailer for Superhero Movie (previously called Superhero!) has popped up online, and you can see it right here.

As you can tell from the trailer, it looks like this flick should be called "Dragonfly-Man." It's basically a trailer full of Spider-Man spoofs, although IMDb doesn't list Spidey among the spoofs, but does list Batman Begins and Fantastic Four. That's my only real complaint about the trailer, which makes it look like it just took the Spider-Man script and spoofed it scene by scene. Still, I loved the spastic rush to change into the superhero outfit, because you just know that it isn't as easy as Spider-Man or Superman make it seem.

The comedy opens March 28, and also features Sara Paxton, Drake Bell, Christopher McDonald, Brent Spiner, Jeffrey Tambor, and Marion Ross.

Names Flock to Slipstream

Filed under: Comedy », Drama », Independent », Casting », Noir », Newsstand », Cinematical Indie »

We reported a few months ago on Anthony Hopkins' painfully personal, ambitious-sounding Slipstream, which he wrote, stars in, directs, and also composed the music for. The movie, which is being made with a small-ish indie budget, is a noir-comedy "about a man, who's caught in a slipstream of time falling back on itself and he remembers his own future," and stems from Hopkins' own "wild thoughts about God, life and death." Hey, I said it was personal.

Already in the ensemble cast with Hopkins are Gena Rowlands and superstar thespian Christian Slater, and that duo has recently been joined by a massive flood of actors, all of whom are apparently eager to work on the weirdest-sounding (apart, maybe, from The Science of Sleep) project of the last year or so. According to today's Hollywood Reporter, all of the following are now caught (ah ha ha) in Slipstream: John Turturro, Camryn Manheim, Jeffrey Tambor, S. Epatha Merkerson, Fionnula Flanagan, Christopher Lawford and Michael Clark Duncan. Whew.

Production began this week in LA; no word yet on a possible release date.
