Jenny Lumet Grabs 'This Strange Thing Called Prom'
In the sea of floofy, should-be-set-on-fire-and-forgotten teen films out there, there is one project I'm really looking forward to seeing -- the adaptation of the New York Times article This Strange Thing Called Prom. Miramax grabbed the story last summer, and now Variety reports that the talented Jenny Lumet has agreed to write the screenplay. She is, of course, the daughter of Sidney, the scribe of Rachel Getting Married, and the pen behind the upcoming Robert Pattinson film Memoirs. As for the story -- it focuses on a group of students who organize a senior prom for their International High School in Brooklyn. That might sound like nothing interesting, and would be just that if these were North American students, and not immigrants from countries like Senegal, Poland, Tibet, and Haiti who have to learn about the traditional prom practices before putting one on themselves. The process is one that "ranged from magical to miserable." (You can read the article here.)
Lumet hit gold with her first film, and is definitely doing what she can to keep things fresh. First there's addiction and familial loss with Rachel Getting Married, and now a tale of lovers and family tragedy and international, prom-yearning kids. I'm thinking we'll be seeing a lot more of this Lumet ... and hopefully more Miley-free teen fare.
Robert Pattinson is a Star-Crossed Lover ... Again
Filed under: Drama », Romance », Casting », Deals »
So while we all already know what Robert Pattinson has planned for next year or so; that's right, setting hearts aflame as the glittery vampire that all the girls love, but you might have noticed that Pattinson doesn't exactly seem comfortable with being a heartthrob. All of which does seem a little strange considering that his next possible follow up to that tortured little blood sucker, Edward Cullen, could be another role about a star-crossed lover -- although something tells me this one won't be for the Hot Topic set. The Hollywood Reporter announced that Pattinson is currently in talks to star in Memoirs for Summit Entertainment. Memoirs was originally written by Will Fetters, and the story centers on "two lovers whose newfound relationship is threatened as they struggle to deal with family tragedies." Summit has already hired Jenny Lumet (daughter to Sidney and screenwriter for Rachel's Getting Married) to give the script a rewrite, and according to THR, Alan Coulter (Hollywoodland) is also in talks to direct.
Typecasting is probably still one of the hazardous things about being a young actor, well that and the DUI's, but catching Pattinson on the press tour for Twilight made me wonder if he was built for this kind of teen mania. Hopefully after a few more adult roles under his belt, and his obligations to Twilight have been met, he'll have something to show for himself other than being the guy hanging in every girl's locker.
Anne Hathaway to Dance with Shiva

There's a new script gearing up for production for Sony Classics, and while we know pretty much nothing about what it will entail, we do know the names behind it -- which aren't too shabby. Dancing with Shiva is a new ensemble comedy from Jenny Lumet, who just happens to be Sidney Lumet's daughter. While this is her first feature script, she has done a few roles over the years as an actress, her most popular being 1988's Running on Empty. Jonathan Demme has been tapped to direct and produce the film, and a solid cast has already been lined up.Anne Hathaway, who just became Jane Austen, will star, with Sesame Street's Mr. Noodle, Bill Irwin (who I always mix up with My So-Called Life dad Tom Irwin), The West Wing's Anna Deveare Smith and that Dangerous Woman, Debra Winger co-starring. The movie will head into production after Demme finishes He Comes in Peace, which means sometime next month in the wonderful state of Connecticut. Since it's all coming together soon, we shouldn't have too long to wait to hear what this whole thing is about. Being that there isn't anything more to say on the project, I'll throw my dancing wish out there -- I want to see some Skinny Legs and All dancing the Dance of the Seven Veils, with an anthropomorphized can of beans, dirty sock, painted stick, conch shell and spoon -- preferably with Terry Gilliam directing. Now that would be a dance!
