Stockwell to Turn 'Bad Men' into 'Sanctuary'
Filed under: Horror », Thrillers »
Yeah, you know John Stockwell. Every movie nerd should. He directed Into the Blue, Turistas, Blue Crush... OK, he played cool kid Dennis Guilder in John Carpenter's Christine. That's how most movie nerds know the guy. (He's actually been in a whole bunch of movies, like Top Gun and Losin' It and ... My Science Project.) So now it looks like Mr. Stockwell has his next directorial gig lined up, and he'll be working with one of the horror adaptation specialists.THR informs us that Stockwell will direct Sanctuary, which sounds a bit like Sleeping With the Enemy, only with a horror twist: A woman and her son take refuge from her terrible ex-husband, only the island they've chosen just might be haunted. Oops. The screenplay comes from Stephen Susco, he of The Grudge, The Grudge 2, and Red, and it's based on the novel Bad Men, by John Connolly. Umm, and based on some of the things I just read at the novel's Amazon page, it's something I'll definitely pick up once I'm done reading this very fun book.
No word on why they didn't stick with the original title. I think it's much cooler.
John Stockwell to Direct Susan Sarandon in 'Middle of Nowhere'

John Stockwell has found considerable success directing fairly dumb but undeniably entertaining movies about ...well, let's face it, about hot girls wearing next to nothing. But did you know he used to be an actor? This was news to me, but the guy's had some pretty major film roles, including a lead part in John Carpenter's Christine and "Cougar" in Top Gun. Stockwell's next directing project will be Middle of Nowhere, "a bittersweet romantic comedy about a clashing mother and daughter." Susan Sarandon will play the mother, Eva Amurri the daughter. Didn't Sarandon already make this movie once? It was called Anywhere but Here with Natalie Portman, and the premise seemed pretty tired back then. And Amurri was in that one too!
According to IMDB, Sarandon has no less than seven projects set for release this year, including Enchanted and the long-delayed Mr. Woodcock. She'll also play "Mom Racer" in next year's Speed Racer. Amurri is probably best known for her role in Saved!, and she'll next appear in The Education of Charlie Banks -- directed by (it pains me to write this) Limp Bizkit's Fred Durst! In Middle of Nowhere Amurri will play Grace, "a young woman whose irresponsible mother blows her college fund on her younger sister's beauty pageant campaign." Stockwell's directorial resume includes Crazy/Beautiful (the touching story of Kirsten Dunst's rack), Blue Crush (the powerful story of Kate Bosworth's rack), Into the Blue (the moving story of Jessica Alba's rack), and Turistas (the thought-provoking story of Melissa George's rack.)
John Stockwell Directs Amusingly Summarized Villain

Generally when I write about non-geek news, it is because something specific from the story has caught my eye. Let me tell you about today's news, and then I'll explain why it jumped out at me. Actor turned director John Stockwell has been tapped to direct a high budget thriller for 2929 Productions, with work starting early next year. No major casting decisions seem to have been made yet, but you can see a look at everyone involved thus far over at Hollywood Reporter. What made me chuckle about this news, and the reason I chose to run with it, was the plot description I stumbled across while casting about on the internet trying to learn something about this flick to share with you. ComingSoon summarizes the movie as "a forest-fire spotter with a secret is visited by his crazy brother in the remote, frozen wilderness of the Pacific Northwest." Tell me you read that description with a straight face and didn't feel a giggle cracking through. What sort of secrets does a forest-fire spotter keep, anyway? I'm sure he killed somebody or something, but in my mind, he cheated at Connect Four as a child. His brother, who could thus never win, was driven to madness thanks to his low self esteem.
I think we should summarize other movies this way, as well. Star Wars could be "a teen from a backwater country falls in love with his own sister and fights to redeem his father from a life of genocide and artificial respiration."
Your turn. Give me your best wacky, one line summary of a flick you love.
Tantalizing Terror & Terrific Ta-Tas: The Turistas Trailer
Filed under: Horror », Thrillers », 20th Century Fox »
When a blissful Brazilian holiday becomes a horrific gauntlet of murder, mayhem and involuntary organ harvests -- it's horror movie time. The flick in question is Turistas, which is the very first release from Fox Atomic, and I think it looks pretty darn intriguing -- and no, not just because of the mega-skimpy bikinis, tyvm.Sixth directorial effort from actor-turned-helmer John Stockwell (he starred in Christine and My Science Project; as director he's previously given us Crazy/Beautiful, Blue Crush and Into the Blue), Turistas is about a bunch of exceedingly photogenic young Americans who run afoul of some black-market nastiness while enjoying a salacious Brazilian vacation. The model-hot "normal kids" are played by Josh Duhamel, Melissa George, Olivia Wilde (sigh), Desmond Askew and Beau Garrett -- and this crew looks to be in a whole lot of sweaty trouble, despite the fact that they're all too gorgeous for words.
The screenplay comes from editor / first-time screenwriter Michael Ross, and it looks to be a semi-creative take on a fairly standard slasher conceit: Hot kids congregate, commit licentious acts -- and then spend the rest of the flick running desperately for their lives as a killer stalks their every step. Only this one's in Brazil ... and there are gurneys involved. Ick.
So fingers crossed on Turistas, which could either be a great little horror thriller or a depthless, vicious dungpile in which we applaud the numerous demises of people much, much sexier than ourselves. At least with Stockwell behind the camera, you know the thing will most likely LOOK good. (Try watching Into the Blue on MUTE some time. Makes the flick about 45 times more entertaining.) To keep you interested until the movie's December 1 release date, you can check out this old promo clip or this brand-new theatrical trailer.
Either way, Brazil's not gonna like this.
Cannabis, the Movie
Filed under: Drama », Deals », Newsstand »
Holy crap! Am I the only person who didn't know you could
make millions of dollars selling weed? It doesn't matter, really, because soon, everyone will know: HBO Films is
producing a movie based on the story of a group of teenagers in Idaho who did just that. Entitled King
Cannabis, the movie will likely focus on Nate Norman, a kid who went from pizza delivery guy to drug kingpin (and
is now doing 12 years in federal prison). With his friends, Norman made $38 million -- selling pot. Either they smoke
an insane amount of marijuana in Idaho, or my concept of how much the stuff costs is way, WAY off. John Stockwell (of crazy/beautiful and
Blue Crush
"fame") will base his screenplay on one of the many magazine articles about the group, and is planning to
direct, as well. So, basically, what we have here is a Risky Business for the 21st century: how I made big bucks, met ladies, and had tons of fun doing illegal things. Sure, this one includes a long prison sentence, but still - think of the money! Who wants to place bets on how many idiot stoner kids will take this as a how-to and get arrested within weeks of the film's release? Anyone?
