Olivia Wilde Saddles Up For 'Cowboys & Aliens'
Filed under: Action », Sci-Fi & Fantasy », Casting », Newsstand », Dreamworks », Steven Spielberg », Comic/Superhero/Geek », Western », Daniel Craig »
I don't know if the image of Daniel Craig in chaps left too many speechless, or if it was that no one was interested in Cowboys & Aliens once Robert Downey Jr. rode off the range, but few had much to say when the rumor mill put Craig in the saddle. Well, what do you say to the news that Craig is officially in, and that he'll be joined by Olivia Wilde? According to THR's Heat Vision, Wilde will play Ella, a woman who joins Craig's mysterious gunslinger to fight off the aliens. (Is the gunslinger now mysterious and no longer named Zeke Jackson? Curious.) I'm not sure if Ella appeared in the original graphic novel / web-comic. There was a female gunfighter named Verity who traded bullets with the Apache right alongside Zeke. Perhaps she'll be a variation on that character, or she'll be a pioneer woman with a rifle, or she'll be one of the West's soiled doves like Megan Fox in Jonah Hex. (Cue the fervent wishing of many male readers for Wilde in similar attire.)
Jon Favreau is directing, and Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci of every-script-under-the-sun-fame have penned the screenplay with Damon Lindelof. Steven Spielberg, Ron Howard, and Brian Grazer are producing alongside Scott Michael Rosenberg, the author of the graphic novel. Shooting is expected to begin this summer. Between this and Tron: Legacy, I think Wilde may be destined to be summer's geek goddess.
Daniel Craig Might Saddle Up For 'Cowboys & Aliens'
Filed under: Action », Sci-Fi & Fantasy », Casting », RumorMonger », DIY/Filmmaking », Newsstand », Dreamworks », Comic/Superhero/Geek », Western », Daniel Craig »
Losing Robert Downey Jr. didn't slow down Cowboys & Aliens for very long, and it didn't even get to jump into the rumor pool. According to Collider, Daniel Craig might just be the man who fills Downey's boots. He's still in negotiations and has not been officially cast, so don't start dreaming of leather chaps just yet.I certainly hope Craig is the man who takes the part. As James Bond, he's one of the undisputed action leaders right now, but he still hasn't gotten to make a name for himself outside of 007. I think it would be wonderful to see him cut loose in something lighter, and to pair him up with Jon Favreau would be ideal. I don't think this is going to be a Wild Wild West by any means, so I don't think it'll hurt Craig's upward climb at all.
The only reason I could see Craig unable to take the part would be a conflict with Bond. Craig and Judi Dench have hinted Bond 23 would film late this year, and aim for a 2011 release. Cowboys & Aliens is aiming for a summer 2011 release date as well. So schedule conflicts could derail Cowboys & Aliens a little longer, or it could find another brawny fellow riding the range altogether. Hollywood is certainly chock full of guys I'd like to see in a ten gallon hat ...
Robert Downey Jr. Won't Play 'Cowboys & Aliens'
Filed under: Action », Sci-Fi & Fantasy », Casting », DIY/Filmmaking », Newsstand », Dreamworks », Comic/Superhero/Geek », Western »
DreamWorks' Wild West adventure Cowboys & Aliens will have to find someone else to wield a six-shooter, because Robert Downey Jr. has dismounted from his horse. According to The LA Times, Downey Jr. has has to drop out of the DreamWorks film due to schedule conflicts. While he hasn't officially signed onto anything, it's rumored to be a conflict with a Sherlock Holmes sequel. Or maybe he just needs a break -- I mean, two franchises plus The Avenger and its spin-offs? Maybe he drew the line at a third. Too bad. He looks so good in hats!
Cowboys & Aliens still boasts one half of the Iron Man duo, as Jon Favreau remains in the director's chair. The hunt is currently on the hunt for a manly actor who can replace Downey Jr. The film is a potential franchise for any one brave enough to grab the reins and play Zeke Jackson, leader of the anti-alien revolt. All those who failed to get in The Green Lantern or Thor might want to call up Favreau and DreamWorks, because once you're in a Favreau comic adaptation, you're untouchably awesome.
Production is tentatively set to begin this year for a release in summer 2011. In the meantime, you can still read Cowboys & Aliens online and cast your vote for Zeke Jackson in the comments. DreamWorks could use the help.
Meet Bethany Cabe, 'Iron Man 2's OTHER Tough Chick
Filed under: Action », Fandom », Comic/Superhero/Geek », Remakes and Sequels »

In my rundown of what comic-based heroines we were going to see onscreen in 2010, I managed to leave out a really cool one: Bethany Cabe of Iron Man 2, who will be played by Kate Mara. When Mara was cast in an "unspecified role" last April, I wondered if she would be playing Cabe and that's since been confirmed by IMDB and Empire. For once, I was right! But I'm less thrilled about that than I am about what this could mean for future Iron Man installments. Cabe is no slouch in Tony Stark's world, and while she may not have the spin-off possibilities of Black Widow, she'll probably be kicking some ass.
Not surprisingly, Cabe first appeared in the pages of Iron Man as most women do -- as a hot chick that Tony wanted to sleep with. They began dating, and initially she was just one of those pesky people Tony had to hide his Iron Man identity from. But then came a scuffle with a sleazy oil company, and Cabe pulled a Vesper Lynd. She had ties to the government, and was a bodyguard working for Cabe and McPherson Security Specialists. (Her own company!) Everyone thought Tony could use a little help, and he was quite grateful they sent him extremely gorgeous protection.
Still unaware of Tony's secret suit, she rescued him from not one, but three supervillains: The Melter, Whiplash, and Blizzard. But Cabe was pissed that Iron Man was engaging in battle for Atlantic City instead of protecting Tony. Apparently, Atlantic City is less important than Stark and while there's probably some aspect of that story I've forgotten, Cabe's continued issues with "Iron Man never helps you!" seemed like a cheesy way to break them up. Which, of course, they did. Tony needs to be free, or the young readers get bored with his icky boyfriend stuff.
Fan Made: 'Iron Man 2' War Machine Costume
Filed under: Fandom », Fan Made »

I'm constantly amazed by how much thought, time and effort some folks put into their fan-made costumes. Me? I'll buy a mask for twenty bucks and then see what I have in my closet that best matches the character's outfit. But then you get dudes like Anthony Le who spend hours upon hours hand-crafting the perfect War Machine costume in anticipation of Iron Man 2 hitting theaters in May. This thing looks so good, even director Jon Favreau has commented on how much he digs the effort.
The coolest part about this costume is that it was created before the Iron Man 2 trailer and images hit -- way back over the summer, with only leaked Comic Con footage to go by. Granted, the costume is a bit of a hybrid between Phil Saunders War Machine concept art and the War Machine from Iron Man 2, but you gotta hand it to the guy for piecing together a costume that looks a lot like the one from the movie. Here are some of the stats on the costume from Le himself (via the Superhero Hype forums):
-Built material High Impact urethane
-over 600+ rivets and rivet washer used so far
-Wrist rockets w/ laser v1.0completed
-Mini Gun simulated fire and drop lock system w/laser v1.0 completed
-Movie accurate Arch reactor v3.0
-Mid-section w/ movable plates v3.0
-"underwear armor" v2.0 Completed
-Leg's/Pants armor v3.0 Completed
-Armor shoes v1.0 Completed
-Neck cover piece armor v2.0
Things still need completed
-Replusor gauntlets
-Upgraded helmet v7.0 w/ upgraded flip open/close hinge system
-lighted eyes "in progress"
-remote firing system "to shoot bottle rockets hehehe"

'Iron Man 2' Previews Galore Ahead of the First Trailer
Filed under: Action », Paramount », Fandom », Comic/Superhero/Geek », Trailers and Clips »
I'm typically not one to jump all over what are essentially previews of previews, but when it comes to Iron Man 2, I'm willing to make an exception. The full trailer for Jon Favreau's follow up to his immensely successful delivery of Marvel's Iron Man on the big screen should be attached to theatrical prints of Sherlock Holmes arriving in theaters Friday, December 25th, but in Internet time that may as well be eight months from now.In the meantime, there are a number of ways you can sate your instinctual need for Robert Downey Jr. as a war-hating superhero. The best is probably taking a gander at Entertainment Tonight's promo for their forthcoming episode about the make of the film, which is embedded below. Sure, it's got the same voice over and logo watermarking a film nerd has come to expect from the nightly outlet, but unless you were at Comic Con last summer or Butt-Numb-a-Thon last weekend, this is probably the first glimpse you'll have at seeing where they've taken Tony Stark or how badass they've made Whiplash (Mickey Rourke). Plus, it's only 30 seconds long, so it's not as though watching it is going to eat up your entire day.
And if you're so inclined, TheMovieBox.net also has a convenient round up of behind-the-scenes looks and interviews available on the web. Most are also from Entertainment Tonight, but TMB has found a few other outlets with backstage looks as well. So click on down for the promo previews and click on over here for even more goodies to whet your Iron Man 2 appetite.
New 'Iron Man 2' Photos Have Everyone Thinking
Filed under: Action », Paramount », Fandom », Movie Marketing », Comic/Superhero/Geek », Remakes and Sequels », Images »

On the heels of the first Iron Man 2 poster come a few official stills straight from Paramount. Everyone looks very serious. Whiplash is seriously working on something, surrounded by pictures of Tony Stark to keep his hate burning and his ethic cheerful. Black Widow is seriously up to no good, even if she looks slinky doing it. Even Tony isn't taking things lightly -- not the destruction to his house, and not whatever he's brewing in his latest science project.
There's nothing really new on display here -- the Black Widow photo has been around in varying degrees of resolution since before San Diego Comic Con -- but it's just nice to see the characters out and about, isn't it? If you're given to intense plot speculation, you can all give your take on just what Tony and Whiplash have brewing, and just who caused Tony's marble floor to shatter into a dozen pieces. Did he fly through the ceiling again? Is he building an access portal so that it doesn't ever happen again? Or did some nefarious individual blast a hole into his luxurious tile, hoping to get into his secret lair of Iron Man suits?
We'll know on May 7th, 2010. Until then, just spin your own stories, and delight in a peek at the finished product. The first stills from a film always remind me of the good old days of Disney Adventures when this is all you'd have to go on until summer rolled around.
The First 'Iron Man 2' Poster Appears!
Filed under: Action », Paramount », Fandom », Newsstand », Movie Marketing », Comic/Superhero/Geek », Remakes and Sequels », Posters »
Marvel Studios, Paramount and Jon Favreau have given you an early Christmas present. Yahoo! Movies has debuted the first poster for Iron Man 2, and as cheesy as it is to go nuts over marketing, it's an awfully cool poster. It's their exclusive, so you'll have to click the picture to see the entire thing, but I've given you a tiny preview above.
The best part? Those of us who didn't get to see the pants-wetting footage at Comic-Con finally get a glimpse at War Machine! There's something deliciously geeky about the buddy cop stylings of this poster. I could live quite comfortably in a world where Iron Man 2 was something akin to a super-suited Lethal Weapon, couldn't you?
Of course, as nice as the poster is, it's no substitute for seeing these guys actually take flight. Faverau has hinted via Twitter that we might see the first Iron Man 2 trailer this Christmas, and that it'll be attached to that other Robert Downey Jr. franchise, Sherlock Holmes. Maybe if you're very good boys and girls, Santa will grant your wish, and we'll get it a few days before Holmes hits theaters. I can't think of a more festive way to ring in the holidays than with a flying hero of red and gold.
Five Folks Who Could Direct 'The Avengers' Instead of Jon Favreau
Filed under: Action », Fandom », Comic/Superhero/Geek », Lists »

I know it's a huge bummer that Iron Man director Jon Favreau told MTV that he's not going to be directing The Avengers, Marvel's forthcoming superhero omnibus film that'll feature the likes of The Hulk, Nick Fury, Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, and whoever else the now Disney-owned studio wants to create a new action figure for. Favreau would love to do it, and he'll executive produce, but logistically he is just not going to be available to direct. Obviously that's not going to stop Marvel from moving forward with the guaranteed moneymaker, so here are five humble suggestions for replacement.
Before we let the fanboy inside us explode at the possibilities, let's keep things a bit grounded. They've got to be directors who could tackle something in the fantasy-action realm and they have to be available; so even though I'd be game for them, busy A-listers like Christopher Nolan or J.J. Abrams just aren't practical.
'Iron Man 2' Returns with More Set Video and Interviews

"In this case, he is Iron Man, we know the characters, we know the tone, we know the rules, the way the world works ... and now we get to play." Jon Favreau on Iron Man 2.
A brand new set video that's definitely not as annoying as those flashy Entertainment Tonight videos has arrived online via France's Canal Plus, and though the intro is in French, the rest of it -- which includes some never-before-seen set footage and interviews with Jon Favreau and Robert Downey Jr. -- is definitely worth a watch. As you can see from the image above -- which shows Scarlett Johansson wearing Iron Man's repulsor glove -- the video teases us with a little more Black Widow action. Not only do we get that brief shot, but we also catch a glimpse of Johansson (as Black Widow?) walking away from an explosion, as well as taking part in some pretty cool stunt work.
Instead of ET's set video on the racetrack, this one takes us inside Tony Stark's workshop, where Stark is attempting (and failing) to build a giant particle accelerator that wraps around and up through his driveway. Says Downey Jr, "I'd be surprised if you weren't surprised." Following that up, Favreau also notes how, historically, the second superhero movie usually rocks. "In comedies, number two is bad because you do the same story again. But with a superhero movie, number two is easier and better. And usually, if you look at most superhero movies, two is better than one. Three is usually not as good as two or one, so that becomes scary because you don't want to repeat yourself."
Watch the video after the jump. Iron Man 2 hits theaters on May 7, 2010.
