Gillian Anderson Loves 'The Smell of Apples'
Filed under: Drama », Casting », Deals », Scripts »
After wrapping up The X Files, Gillian Anderson practically went into hiding. She's had a small handful of roles, some time in Bleak House, and that's about it. But maybe there's just something about X Files air that makes her feel like working and making the money. She's wrapped How to Lose Friends and Alienate People, and along with the X Files sequel, she's got a few other flicks on the way. There's No One Gets Off in This Town on her docket, and Variety reports that's she's now signed on for Kfir Yefet's The Smell of Apples.Set in South Africa during the '70s, Apples is a coming-of-age drama based on Mark Behr's novel. Marnus Erasmus is a young kid from an affluent, white, South African family who grows in a house of "terrible hatred and ignorance." Yet he's also challenged by the events that happen around him, from a servant's son who is severely burned, to an aunt who is exiled for her liberal views. I imagine that Anderson will play Marnus' mother, and Julian McMahon, who is co-starring, will probably be the dad and "youngest-ever major-general in the South African Defence Force." Variety says the production, which will gear up in the new year, will be the first film from the partnership between Pink Sands, a UK production house, and the London-based Target Entertainment. But first, of course, Gillian needs to chill with aliens again for all of those Scully fiends out there.
Review: Premonition

Where to begin with Premonition, the newest film starring Sandra Bullock? I like Bullock, I really do. She's smart and sexy and I'm sure her bank account makes mine look like a kids' piggy bank, but I sure wish she'd make smarter choices with her films. I wanted very much to like Premonition, if for no other reason than that it looked intriguing enough in the trailer, and I was really rooting for Bullock to finally hit it out of the park both critically and financially. Unfortunately, this film isn't going to be the one to do it. Premonition is just an incredible mess from start to finish, filled with so many logical inconsistencies, it's practically impossible for the audience to sustain the necessary suspension of disbelief for long.
The premise sounds intriguing enough: one day, Linda Hanson (Bullock) answers the door to find the sheriff there to inform her that her husband Jim (Nip/Tuck's Julian McMahon) died in a car crash the day before. Linda moves through that first hard day in the wake of her husband's death, numb with grief and shock. Her mother comes over to help her with Linda and Jim's two young daughters, and Linda falls asleep on the couch, clutching a wedding picture of herself and Jim. She wakes up the next morning, in her own bed – and is shocked to find Jim downstairs drinking his morning coffee and very much alive.
I Have a Premonition of a Lame Sandy Bullock Flick

How many J-horror remakes have we weathered in the past three years? Five? Seven? Boy is that a trend I'll be happy to see die ... but not just yet, apparently. Seems there's still a remake of The Eye due to hit theaters late next year, but before that we get Sandra Bullock starring in Premonition -- a flick that definitely seems to be a semi-kinda-remake of Norio Tsuruta's Yogen (aka Premonition) from 2004. That film, which clearly borrowed a few cups from the original Ringu, is about a phantom newspaper that informs people of tomorrow's bad news. Not a bad little entry into the J-horror canon, but a slight one nonetheless....actually, come to think of it, I'm beginning to suspect that these films have no connection. Based on this new trailer and the few plot synopses I've seen lying around, it looks like the only thing the two movies have in common is the title. My bad.
Anyway, Sandra plays a woman whose husband is killed in a car accident, only when she wakes up the next morning, he's (dun dun dun) still alive! Scary! The movie comes from German director Mennan Yapo and second-time screenwriter Bill Kelly. Co-starring alongside Ms. Bullock will be Julian McMahon, Amber Valletta, Nia Long, Peter Stormare and Kate Nelligan. Release date is March 16.
Fantastic Update: Tim Story Talks Surfer, Doom and More

If there's one thing that's good about Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, it's that director Tim Story seems to be doing all he can to ensure folks actually like this one. Recently, Story stopped by his blog to give an update on the film. Here's a quick recap of said update:
- Right now, Story and the gang are working very hard at improving Michael Chiklis' (The Thing) suit in an effort to make the character more agile. Most of these changes came based on the fan's reaction to the way The Thing looked in the first film. One such fan-related change comes in the form of a bigger brow. Oh, and the dude will be wearing more clothes too. Says story, "Now that he's comfortable with himself, we can have more fun with his appearance. Wait until you see him in his tux."
- According to the blog entry, it seems Julian McMahon (Dr. Doom) is not only back onboard for the sequel, but his face will actually be seen ... not just heard. This announcement looks to be garnering a ton of mixed messages from the fans, as Dr. Doom isn't supposed to be seen. Could we be talking flashback here? What do you think?
- Another controversial move has to do with the altering of Dr. Doom's mask. Story notes, "There's a more evil tone to it. I've been working on a maquette of the entire Doom look, complete with armor with my friends at Spectral Motion (the guys who brought you Thing, Beast, Juggernaut, Hellboy, etc...) The look is madd cool. I think you guys will like it."
- And, finally, on The Silver Surfer: "Yes, now the question that I keep getting asked too many times...Doug Jones or no Doug Jones. Here's the low down. Doug has been working on a number of things regarding the Surfer. In order for the presence of the CGI SS to appear and move real, we need someone to perfect movement and provide a base, to which WETA can do their thing. That the jest of it. I don't know what that confirms for you guys but there you go."
There you have it folks! I think the movie is shaping up to kick some major ass. Thoughts? Opinions?

Bullock has a Premonition and get some friends
Filed under: Drama », Thrillers », Casting », Newsstand »
As we reported
way back in August, Sandra Bullock, as part of her bid to appear in
fewer stupid movies, agreed to star in Premonition, a
supernatural thriller about "a housewife (Bullock) whose husband dies in a car crash and who is shocked when he
appears alive the next day." Good call, Sandy - there's no way this one can be stupid. The dead/not dead hubby
will be played by Julian McMahon who, given his experience as a demon
husband on Charmed, should find this job a piece of cake.
(Oh, wait - according to the IMDB, he's not dead, it was a premonition. Bummer)Since the movie is currently filming in Shreveport, LA (they won't be put off by a little hurricane), it's a good thing that casting has finally been completed - joining Bullock in (not) being haunted will be Nia Long, Amber Valletta, and Kate Nelligan. Long is set to play Bullock's best friend, and Nelligan will be her mother. Valletta, needless to say, is the movie's designated Hot Chick, and will be having extramarital sex with McMahon. (That sound you hear is a nation of teenage boys suddenly becoming very interested seeing a Sandra Bullock movie.)
