Who's Writing the 'Iron Man' Sequel?
Oddly enough we're told it's Justin Theroux, who's making his screenwriting debut with Tropic Thunder a bit later this summer. Yes, that would be the same Justin Theroux who played the immortal role of Adam Kesher in Mulholland Dr. and the badass Irishman Seamus O'Grady in Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle. The trade piece breaking the story gives no hint of why Marvel Studios thought of Theroux for the project, and I couldn't find out anywhere else, but I'm sure someone will give an interview soon enough. Last year, Theroux directed an indie called Dedication from someone else's script, starring Tom Wilkinson and Billy Crudup. It got mediocre reviews and I missed it, despite my eagerness to watch anything with Wilkinson. If a career change is what the actor was after, he certainly got it: writing Iron Man 2 is a pretty plum gig. Can you imagine?
Of course, I tend to doubt that the sequel -- which is set for release in April, 2010 -- is going to wind up with just one screenwriter when all is said and done. Theroux's draft will probably be reworked, retouched and polished a dozen times. But it's cool that the actor-turned-director-turned-scribe will at least take a first crack.
Hilarious 'Tropic Thunder' Mockumentary
Filed under: Comedy », Trailers and Clips »
Just when I thought I couldn't be any more in love with the thought of Tropic Thunder, they make a mockumentary trailer, which you can see above, called Rain of Madness. As Jan Jürgen, Justin Theroux grabs a camera and films what is happening during the most expensive and grandiose Vietnam War film of all time. The aims of a filmmaker, the comfort of a good pair of shoes, and even the man that brings down Mother Nature with his fire -- it's all in there.
I can only hope that there's more to this mockumentary than a trailer, and that the camera gets turned on Jan a few times -- maybe not a full-length doc, but at least more Coogan mocking. But for now we'll have to wait and see. At the very least, they've got a website for this puppy, which you can check out in the title link above. So far, it doesn't have much, but it does have a great letter to the audience from Mr. Jürgen.
Are you ready for a Rain of Madness?
Cinematical Seven: Hottest Hunks of Horror

a. a handsome man with a well-developed physique.
One might argue that some tastes are, therefore, off, but subjectivity and sex are one of the world's big blessings. We don't all lust for the same people, and thus, the earth can stay safe. Otherwise, imagine a world-wide Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered. It wouldn't be pretty. So, what follows are my list of hunks.
I am sure you will question some of my picks, and I will admit -- some don't have the stellar physique that the others do. That being said, each of them have been in horror movies, and they've done their fair share of testosterone bewitching. But this is just my own, subjective taste, which will probably bother and bewilder some. But that's where the comments come in. Share your horror hunks, who have chased, or been chased, on-screen -- extra points if they're a little surprising. This is Halloween, after all, which is all about a world that's just a little different...
EXCLUSIVE: First Poster for Billy Crudup and Mandy Moore Comedy 'Dedication'
Filed under: Comedy », Drama », Romance », The Weinstein Co. », Images »
Those nice people over at The Weinstein Co. just sent Cinematical the first poster for Justin Theroux's upcoming romantic dramedy Dedication, starring Billy Crudup and Mandy Moore. The story revolves around a highly-dysfunctional author of children's books (Crudup) who has major issues with women, enjoys telling children that Santa Claus doesn't exist and whose personal motto is "Life is nothing but the occasional burst of laughter rising above the interminable wall of grief." When his usual illustrator, played by Tom Wilkinson, unexpectedly dies, the author must begin working with an attractive young female illustrator, played by Moore. Dedication, which premiered at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival and was snapped up by the Weinsteins at that time, marks the directorial debut of Theroux, who is known for his acting work in David Lynch films Inland Empire and Mulholland Drive, along with other credits. The film will also feature other well-known players such as Dianne Wiest, Amy Sedaris, and Bob Balaban, and is scheduled to hit theaters on August 24. Ben Stiller Is Done With Museums And Is Heading To The Tropics
Filed under: Action », Comedy », Scripts »
To be honest, in all the rush of the holidays I never got around to watching Night At The Museum, granted I'm not a huge Ben Stiller fan, but I got the occasional chuckle out of the trailer. Well, in the end it looks like I didn't really miss out on anything unforgettable. I never really thought Stiller would be a good fit for family films; I always thought his comedy worked best when it could get a little more "adult". If you've seen the SNL digital short by Adam McKay about a one night stand with Glen Frey then you know what I mean.Production Weekly announced that Stiller and writing partner Justin Theroux are set to begin production on their comedy Tropic Thunder. The story would follow a film crew besieged by problems, including being mistaken for commandos in a local war on location, all while trying to make a big budget epic war movie. So I can only assume the plot is Stiller's nod to his humble beginnings in Steven Spielberg's Empire of The Sun. Stiller is set to direct the film with principal photography scheduled to begin this July. Hopefully the laughs will be kept PG-13 at the very least.
The Music of Sundance
Here I sit, nestled in Utah, a short drive from Provo Canyon and Sundance. I had never realized that some of my family relocated just south of the soon-to-be-filled-with-film town, and in no time, I wondered if I could get together enough airmiles so make the trip again in a few weeks. Unfortunately, that isn't looking likely, and it's particularly painful between the Slamdance release of the latest Allan Moyle film, and the music that will sing from Sundance.Special music events will include "Sundance Celebrates Music and Film" and "Film2Music," but that is only the tip of the melodic iceburg. On January 24, there will be a large roundtable discussion between composers and directors on the creative process of film scoring. The composers who will be present -- Terence Blanchard, who has scored a number of pieces for Spike Lee's films, Peter Golub, whose scored films starring everyone from Nicky Katt to Forest Whitaker, Dave Robbins, who scored Dead Man Walking, Anton Sanko, Suzanne Vega's guitarist who has composed music for quirky films from Party Girl to Scotland, PA, and finally, Adam Hollander, who seems to be a new composer. (If anyone had information about him, please it share in the comments!) The directors in the panel will be -- Mike Cahill, new director of King of California, Tom DiCillo, who brought us the likes of Brad Pitt's Johnny Suede, Andrew Wagner, who wrote and directed The Talent Given Us, which seems to have starred his whole family, and finally the biggest name of the directorial list -- Justin Theroux. Yes, the Inland Empire star has directed a film called Dedication, which will premiere at Sundance.
If you want a little less talk, and a little more music, Sundance's Music Cafe will continue with an interesting lineup -- Jill Sobule, Donovan, Ron Sexsmith, Pete's brother, Simon Townshend and according to The Hollywood Reporter... Julia Sweeney?! So, if you get your tuckus to Sundance, and find you need a break between films, you can always sing along about kissing a girl, or about Sunshine Superman.
Crisp Stills of Inland Empire Are Now Online

I became forever hooked on David Lynch when I stared at Laura Palmer's prom picture. I was sitting alone in my parent's living room, all the lights off, and her smiling face matched with Angelo Badalamenti's eerie music got me. I became a passenger in Lynch's surreal car, watching his old films on a portable dvd player as we drove through a Lost Highway, passed an old man on a lawnmower, and travelled the length of Mulholland Drive.
Then, unfortunately, he was de-railed by aggravation and hid himself amongst bits, bytes, and weird, hand-drawn comics that never appealed to me the way his previous work had. For a while I mourned, re-watching
We've gone over the logistics. Lynch took years to create this film, which he shot on DV, writing it scene-by-scene, his usual actors going along without any idea of the film's plot. It's a scattered, non-linear story, one that has been promoted by a large cow. We've even shared some low-res pictures.
But now, as the limited run date approaches, JoBlo reports that crisp, high-quality stills have been released on CinEmpire, bringing visuals to all the gossip we've heard over the last few years. There are stills of the actors, from Lynchian princess Laura Dern to the delightfully creepy Grace Zabriskie, as well as behind-the-scenes shots. To me, you can't get much more Lynch than seeing him sitting cross-legged amongst film equipment, holding a smoke and reading through notes.
I Have Accepted Justin Theroux as My Personal Saviour ... News on The Ten

There are times when casting news is like a make-your-own-sundae. You walk up to the smorgasbord of sugar knowing what tastes good. In this case, it's when our
In this case, the cherry isn't a simple maraschino, but a large, juicy cherry pickled in kirsch. Justin Theroux, who has been linked to the project since the beginning, will be playing Jesus. I don't know the details, but the New York-based vignette comedy includes one that takes place in
Granted, I'm biased. I, like many women, have a thing for Justin Theroux. Sure, he looks like a deliciously dirty angel, but he also picks varied parts and he's a man of all traits -- he doesn't only act, but he also paints and speaks Chinese. He's taken Kyle MacLachlan's spot as David Lynch's it-boy, and he helped Crispin Glover make Full Throttle tolerable. Forget Jeremy Sisto and James Caviezel, Justin Theroux is my personal saviour.
David Wain Spoofs The Ten Commandments
Filed under: Comedy », Casting »
Of the large comedy troupe that appeared on MTV and very briefly on CBS as The State, no single member has risen to any great length of fame, but three of them broke off to form the funniest trio since The Marx Brothers worked without Zeppo or Gummo. Michael Ian Black, Michael Showalter and David Wain have performed on stage, online and on Comedy Central as Stella, and the latter two wrote the brilliant cult comedy Wet Hot American Summer, which was also directed by Wain. Since that film, Showalter made his own movie (the understated and underrated The Baxter), and Black's directorial effort (The Pleasure of Your Company) is coming soon. Now Wain is finally making a follow-up to Summer, this time co-writing with Ken Marino, who appeared in the previous film and was also a member of Stella. The film is a spoof of The Ten Commandments and is simply called The Ten. It is set to begin shooting in July and will star Paul Rudd, Jessica Alba, Amanda Peet, Justin Theroux, Adam Brody and Marino. My guess is that the three Stella guys will have roles, as usual, too.
I always felt this bunch was the real successor to Monty Python, and now with a wacky Biblical picture, they may prove it. Sure, Mel Brooks did an adequate bit in History of the World: Part I that spoofed Moses' story, but if you've ever seen any of the hysterical projects that Wain has been involved in, you have to agree that his latest endeavor will be equally amazing. If you haven't seen any of his work, go and rent Summer and download all the Stella episodes from iTunes this very minute. And be prepared with stitches for when your stomach bursts from laughter.
