'The Ugly Truth' of Vibrating Underwear

Filed under: Comedy », Romance », Trailers and Clips »

I now take back any defense I gave Katherine Heigl for her comments about Knocked Up. I was already on my way there when I heard about The Ugly Truth and its premise where a smart and successful woman turns to a chauvinist to learn about nabbing her beau. I hit the brink with the second trailer where she actually tries to deep throat a hot dog and stick out her chest to get the guy, while he says every pervish thing he can think of. And now ... now there's vibrating underwear.

In the clip after the jump, so appropriately coming to us from Coming Soon, Heigl's character gets a little vibrating gift as she gets ready for a date. She decides to put on the panty rocket and then gets whisked off on a half-date/half-business meeting. At no time does she decide to excuse herself to take off these things, and in fact, gets into some hot trouble when the remote falls into the hands of a kid at the next table. Heigl channels When Harry Met Sally, poorly I might add, and Gerard Butler watches in amusement.

Heigl... How any woman who notes chauvinism in a Judd Apatow movie can then take on this schlock is beyond my comprehension. Furthermore, take away Butler's charm and put ... hmm ... let's say Steve Buscemi into the role -- is it still all romantically funny, or does it get downright creepy? Actually, now that would be a movie -- The Ugly Truth, where a romcom tries to deliver this bull pucky to audiences without a dapper leading man to make it palatable.

Katherine Heigl Nabs Herself a Drama

Filed under: Drama », Romance », Casting », Scripts »

It's not all sh*ts and giggles. After tackling some heavy cancer treatment on Grey's Anatomy, Katharine Heigl has grabbed herself a big-screen drama. The Hollywood Reporter posts that Heigl will star and executive produce an upcoming film called Life As We Know It, which Greg Berlanti (Everwood) is directing.

Written by Ian Deitchman and Kristin Rusk Robinson, and in turnaround since 2001, the film will focus on two singles "who suddenly become caregivers to an orphaned girl after the parents, their mutual best friends, are killed in an accident." What? No romance and laughs in sight? Can it be?

Not so fast. It looks like this script has gotten one hell of a face lift, because when Fox 2000 originally bought it, the basic plot of the project was the same, but it was described as a romantic comedy. I guess someone along the line figured that sad, orphaned children don't make for happy stories ... unless Peter Pan is involved. The film will retain, however, the lingering scent of romance. Although THR says nothing of it, the Variety piece calls it a romantic drama.

Whatever the case, no starting date has been set, but the project is expected to be fast-tracked. Are you ready for Heigl to jump out of the ugliness of The Ugly Truth and into something meatier?

Check Out Some Red-Banded Fun From 'The Ugly Truth'

First off, I should be fair and post a classy publicity still that's fair to Katherine Heigl, but I feel the girls need something to balance out this week's Megan Fox overload. So, here's a solo Gerard Butler. Pretend he's holding that heart out while saying "I could never love Optimus Prime or Megan Fox as much as I love you." (Not that I'm implying Transformers is just for the boys. I'd never do that. If you like, you can reverse it to have him begging for you to love him more than Shia LaBeouf and Optimus.)

If you want to hold onto that lovey-dovey image, you might not want to watch this Red-Band clip from The Ugly Truth. But if you're feeling in the mood for some raunchy, naughty talk from Butler (be sure to listen for a slip of that Scottish accent), then go right ahead and click. In this very NSFW clip, Butler's boorish Mike offers Heigl's highstrung Abby some helpful tips on how to really attract and please a man. Surprise! It's all cosmetic, ranging from short skirts to push up bras, and just what she can do with her ponytail. Could all this R-rated dialogue mean The Ugly Truth is destined to be July's Hangover? Or will the romance drive away the ones looking for raunch?

As I wait for your comments (please come back to post one after you watch the clip) I'm off to go hate on myself because I fail all of The Ugly Truth rules. I live in jeans and a ponytail ... oh, who am I kidding. I've gone beyond Heigl's "comfort and efficiency" into fashion evocative of Jeff Bridges in The Big Lebowski. Butler will never love me. I might as well die.

'The Ugly Truth' Gets a Pretty New Trailer

Oh, Gerard Butler. How do I reconcile my feelings towards you? I go from crushing hard on you to wanting to smack you in the face when you show up in the tabloids and TMZ. (I miss the days when I knew you only as "that Scottish dude from the Tomb Raider sequel.")

But don't take that too personally Mr. Butler, because it's also how I feel about the trailer for The Ugly Truth. (I miss the days when I knew you only as Pillow Talk.)

I mean, it looks funny. I laugh and yet it also causes me to wince, not only at its predictability, but at what it might really be saying about men, women, and dating. Even knowing how it must happily turn out, it's still the kind of story that makes me feel all squirmy and insecure, and tempted to join a nunnery lest I encounter "hilarious" situations like this.

So, without further whining, here's the latest trailer for The Ugly Truth, courtesy of MySpace's Trailer Park. You might remember that the raunchy romantic comedy was supposed to be released this month, but was pushed back to compete with Judd Apatow. Some scenes were played at ShoWest last week to a lot of laughs and thumbs-up, which made Sony very confident in that July 24 date. See what you think.

Ms. Heigl: Really? Ashton Kutcher is the Next Step in Your Career?

Filed under: Thrillers », Casting »

There has been a lot of buzz over the path of Katherine Heigl's career -- much of which is steeped in rumors about her desire for good material. Whether or not some of the particulars are true, like rumors that she wants to exit Grey's Anatomy due to crappy storylines, I think it's safe to say that she definitely portrays herself as a woman with a plan. A woman with a crappy rom-com plan thus far, but a plan nonetheless. I just can't believe that it includes Ashton Kutcher.

Variety reports that Heigl and Kutcher will star in Lionsgate's new thriller called Five Killers. Following director Robert Luketic to the feature, straight from The Ugly Truth, Heigl will play a woman who meets the man of her dreams (Kutcher) while on vacation and gets hitched. Unfortunately, "married bliss is turned upside down when they discover that their neighbors may be assassins hired to kill them."

Unlike many, I wasn't angered by many of her public comments. I understood her point of view over that whole Knocked Up kerfuffle, and I thought it she was quite honest and rational with her Emmy withdrawal last year. But her big screen choices make any complaints about mediocre storylines, or determination about her craft, a complete joke. Will any of you actually go see this?

Sony Moves 'The Ugly Truth' From Spring to Summer

Normally, I wouldn't care that Sony pushed back its release of the seemingly unremarkable rom-com The Ugly Truth almost four months, except that the new date -- July 24th -- lands just a week before Judd Apatow's demographic-sharing Funny People opens.

Despite all evidence to the contrary in the only available trailer, it seems that this Katherine Heigl-Gerard Butler R-rated battle of the sexes might just have what it takes to succeed in the late-summer bawdy-comedy domain made popular by Step Brothers last year, Clerks II in 2006 and Wedding Crashers in 2005, instead of the relative safe bet that is the first week in April.

Now it's only a matter of time before the studio drops a red-band trailer that may or may not have me thinking this might actually be funny, and if ever there was a studio that knew how to embrace restricted promotional materials, it's this one.

What say you guys (and girls)? Has this looked appealing to you to begin with? Are either Heigl or Butler effective draws alone, let alone together? And will this movie have what it takes to sway you from simply buying a ticket to G-Force instead?

The Trailer for 'The Ugly Truth' Isn't Too Ugly At All

Filed under: Comedy », Romance », Sony », Movie Marketing », Trailers and Clips »

The trailer for The Ugly Truth, the romantic comedy starring Gerard Butler and Katherine Heigl is up at the film's official website. The premise of this film sounded downright terrible -- a television producer is forced to deal with a chauvinistic correspondent, who decides to teach her what men want so that she can find love, with the pair discovering "an unexpected result" along the way. Could that result be ... love? Yeah, probably.

But you know what? The trailer's not half bad, and it really does seem like an updated and raunchier Pillow Talk. Plus, it's rated R, which gives me a lot of hope that it could be something akin to a Judd Apatow movie. I really expected a lot of PG-13 chauvanism, not lessons on how to sexily eat a hot dog, or Butler using the phrase "ladygarden."

Maybe I'm just a sucker for a Butler movie after all. I slagged him off a bit last week, but he's just so darn charming, even when he's being a total sleaze. Then again, 2 hours of him saying things like "Get on a Stairmaster!" might be an emotionally unpleasant experience. I like escapism in my movies. If I wanted to hear guys saying that kind of stuff to me, I'd just go to a Denver bar and wait ten minutes. It'd be cheaper than a movie ticket.

The Ugly Truth
opens April 3rd, 2009.

Movie Site's Snarky 'Frigid 50' List Topped by ... Heath Ledger. WOW.

Filed under: Celebrities and Controversy », Lists »

Ah, yes. This should go over well. Our pals over at Film Threat have compiled their annual Frigid 50, which lists the Hollywood movers and shakers who have ceased to move and shake us thanks to their "overbearing personalities, poor career choices and chronic inability to stop making fools of themselves." It's a great antidote to the smarmy lists like "100 Most Powerful People" or "25 Entertainers of the Year" or whatever.

This year's list includes Katherine Heigl for twice publicly dissing the writers who have made her career; Al Pacino and Robert De Niro for their regular appearances in terrible movies; and the Star Wars franchise for grievances too numerous to mention.

And in the #1 spot: Heath Ledger. I quote:

"Why so deceased? Heath Ledger was an actor on the climb, albeit a rather subtle one, to the upper ranks of his profession.... There's no way Ledger wasn't aware of the buzz around his -- admittedly -- bravura performance as the Joker.... And yet, even with a career reaching its apex and a young daughter, he ended up overdosing on a s***load of painkillers and antidepressants. We'd love to cry for someone cut down in his prime, but clearly Ledger didn't appreciate what he had, or the journey he took to get there.... If this were any other person than the guy who played the Joker and mumbled through Brokeback Mountain, we'd probably be nominating him for a Darwin Award right about now."

OH SNAP! Take that, promising young actor who died tragically!

'The Ugly Truth' Gets a Clever One-Sheet

Filed under: Comedy », Romance », Sony », Movie Marketing », Images », Posters »

In the grand stick-figure tradition of Zack and Miri Make a Porno, and via FilmoFilia, comes the first one sheet for The Ugly Truth, the upcoming romantic-comedy starring Katherine Heigl and Gerard Butler. Mr. Butler, if you were looking for a sign that you've hit the big-time, look no further than this! Your face is nowhere to be seen. They went on sheer name recognition, and cleverly alluded to your kilt-zone. (Then again, they could be suggesting that all women remember of you in 300 is your moonlit ass. Let's hope not, though.)

Despite that it's playing on an old stereotype, I think this is a pretty cute poster. It's so much better than the Photoshopped sunshine-and-smiles posters romantic comedies usually go with -- and while we're bound to get one eventually, I like that they've started out on an original footing; it makes me think this might just be the Doris Day / Rock Hudson sex comedy they're selling it as.

[Thanks to Holly of the Gerard Butler GALS for sending this my way. I heart you guys, but not with either of the zones featured in the poster. My actual heart.]

Discuss: How Much Honesty Do You Want From Hollywood?

Filed under: Celebrities and Controversy », Fandom »

I've always been a fan of honest assessments in interviews -- I'm talking about those fleeting moments when an actor, actress, director, or anyone else in film backs out of the marketing machine for a second and speaks about their work honestly. It drives me up a wall when I see a talented person lather a bad movie/role in platitudes as if we won't figure out that they're lying. Sure, they have to help buzz for their projects, but sometimes a spade is just a spade.

Katherine Heigl has ticked off many recently for removing her name from Emmy contention because she doesn't feel the material she was given on Grey's Anatomy was worthy of consideration. It may be a bit too truthful, but isn't it accurate? Her character arc isn't the stuff of Emmy nominations. We complain when actors are given nods they didn't really deserve, but are equally put off when someone pulls their name out of the running for that reason. Or, is it just because she admitted it publicly? Or, that she's been very honest before? I wasn't entirely thrilled with the portrayals in Knocked Up, and was relieved that she admitted so herself, even if the film has given her a lot of success.
