Ken Davitian Chases Women with Bernie Mac on TV

Filed under: Comedy », Casting », Home Entertainment »

We've seen more of Ken Davitian's body than anyone could ever want (with the exception of Sacha Baron Cohen, who got it in the sweaty flesh), and we'll soon see him as the gun-wielding baddie in Get Smart. Now he's hitting the small screen and signing on for a co-starring role that should give us a better taste of his acting chops, or at least give him some more lines. Variety reports that he will star with Bernie Mac in an upcoming comedy called Starting Under.

With images of hairy, naked wrestling in Borat lodged into my cranium, "Starting Under" isn't the best title, but it doesn't look like this will have any sort of black-bar-required scenes -- especially since this show is on Fox and not HBO. Mac stars as a man who has just gotten a divorce, moves in with his son, and gets a job at his son's liquor warehouse. He befriends Ken (Davitian), a 40-something co-worker who is also divorced, and the two hang out and chase women together.

Hopefully this won't interfere with Ken's big-screen work, because the man is damned funny. But even if it does, we've still got Lonely Street, Float, Let the Game Begin, Not Forgotten, and Soul Men on the way.

'Get Smart' Gets Kinda Dumb

Filed under: Comedy », Remakes and Sequels », Trailers and Clips »

That, above, is Get Smart's international trailer. It's been circling the net like mad, and it seems like I'm not the only one who is disappointed. I loved the earlier, brief "element of surprise!" clip -- Ken Davitian's face was so non-plussed... It was perfect! I giggled when Steve Carrell's Maxwell Smart tried to get out of the phone booth. This time around, I grinned a little, and still laughed at the "surprise" clip, but the rest left me antsy.

I won't go so far as to say I hated it, but I don't have the level of excitement I had before. I'm hoping that maybe, just maybe, this is the fault of the trailer. Warner Brothers -- the original spots were great. Sure, they weren't a long trailer that showed every important scene from the movie, but maybe that's a good thing. If you can capture the feel of a film in one brief moment, and make the audience laugh and anxiously wait to see the rest, you don't need to barrage them with clips of the whole film.

The above was me trying to convince myself that it's the trailer, and not the over-all movie. I don't think I did a good job, but what do you think? Do you like this international trailer? Do you think the movie will be good?

Borat's Guide to Kazakhstan & the US Hits Shelves

Filed under: Comedy », New Releases », Fandom », Movie Marketing »

It's been a solid year since Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan blazed across screens. The racist punks and hug-fearers have whipped out their lawsuits, and all the press has died down. Of course, that makes it the perfect time for Sacha Baron Cohen to release a book this week as Borat Sagdiyev called BORAT: Touristic Guidings to Minor Nation of U.S. and A. and Touristic Guidings to Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan. The cover boasts the Borat basics -- scary, horned, green Jews, and more of Sagdiyev's bits than you ever need to see.

In honor of the release, Reuters has posted an e-mail interview with the Kazakh-loving superstar. It's not a bad gig for Cohen -- sitting around at home with the new baby, whipping up awkward-to-read e-mails, and making money. I'd just like to be there when the kid gets older and asks dad why he wrote a scene that would place his face firmly in Ken Davitian's genitals. Anyhow, Borat answers the following pressing topics: which country he prefers (Kazakhstan or USA), which people are smarter, advice for people traveling in the US, life in Kazakhstan, and the most pressing of all: who Borat is behind for the next President. And I've got to give props to Frances Kerry, who was noted as editor -- just how exactly do you edit Borat?!

News Bites: Hellboy 2, Davitian Gets Smart and Trailer for 'Ten'

Three very-different morsels for Monday:
  • I had thought Hellboy 2: The Golden Army was when my ex got really swollen from walnuts, but it's actually going to be a little more cinematic. The LA Daily News has reported that Guillermo del Toro is on his way to Budapest to "zero in on the beginning of principal photography," according to Beast-turned-Hellboy Ron Perlman. The actor is currently bulking up for the film, which will head into production at the end of May. His regimen: "The push-ups, the sit-ups, the stationary bike. Then, of course, there's the lifting of the pizza." So, Budapest, this May. Bring Perlman some pizza and you just might get behind the scenes.
  • What do you do after you've securely planted your genitals in Sacha Baron Cohen's face? You Get Smart. Ken Davitian, who played Azamat Bagatov in Borat, is the latest name to join the cast of the remake, which already has Steve Carell, Anne Hathaway, Alan Arkin, The Rock and Terrence Stamp. The furry funny man will play the evil assistance of Stamp, who will be the head of KAOS. Davitian says: "It's my first film that is with so many big people." Somehow, I bet it won't be his last.
  • If you've been around Cinematical for a bit, you might remember that I have a thing for Justin Theroux -- especially as Jesus. While we still have to wait a God-awful 5 months until The Ten's limited US release on August 3, the official site now has a trailer linked on YouTube. Ignore the simple, mid-90's look of the website and click the "Trailer" link at the top, and don't be fooled by the music. Just delight in the many, many recognizable faces, in the strange naked dancing, and the profanity at the end. Yes, this might be considered NSFW.
