The Last Word(s) on 'Twilight' Belong to Kevin Smith

Filed under: Fandom », NSFW », Trailers and Clips »

You've read all the reviews and interviews, and watched all the spoof videos. Most of you reading this have probably already watched the film, too. Today, as The Twilight Saga: New Moon finally reaches theaters, it sorta feels like the day after Christmas -- all this hype, work and constant coverage building up to the release of just one film ... and then it's over. Now the "real" fans will begin their endless geeked-out debates on their own fansites, and the rest of us will talk about the film's boffo box office while preparing for three weeks worth of nonstop promo for JAMES F*CKING CAMERON'S AVATAR! ROAR!

So while you drink the last of your blood energy drink, and begin breaking down the Bella and Edward Nativity Scene that's currently on your front lawn, why not let our good buddy Kevin Smith have the last word on all things Twilight. During his panel at this past San Diego Comic-Con, Smith went off for about four minutes on the Twilight Phenomenon, and took us through the experience of watching a clip from New Moon while thousands of young girls screamed their silly little heads off. It's a very amusing clip (that's homemade, so excuse the jerky camera movements), and if it's the last thing you watch before folks begin ramping up their Eclipse coverage, you'll find yourself a happier and more well-adjusted human being because of it.

Watch the clip after the jump, though be warned that it comes with plenty of foul language.

Harold Faltermeyer to Score Kevin Smith's 'Dicks'?

Filed under: Action », Comedy », Music & Musicals », Warner Brothers », RumorMonger », Newsstand »

Everything about Kevin Smith's A Couple of Dicks sounds too good to be true. How can you not look forward to a movie that promises to be a throwback to the glory days of 1980s buddy cop comedies and the next Roadhouse? It even lured in Bruce Willis, and if you can bring back The Last Boy Scout side of him, your job is half done. But the film might just score an extra point of goodness: Empire caught up with Smith who revealed that 1980s soundtrack-meister Harold Faltermeyer might be lending his steely sound to Dicks.

"As I'm putting the flick together, I see it as a real throwback to the 80s buddy cop genre," said Smith. "So I'm putting some music on this scene, see if it works. I take this piece from Fletch, which I've always loved, and it works. Now I take this piece of music from Beverly Hills Cop, and it plays the comedy well. It plays the action well. And, after doing those temp cues, I said to a few people, 'Is it crazy to see if Harold Faltermeyer will want to score this movie?'"

Faltermeyer hasn't done a soundtrack since 1994, but fortune favors the Smith. "Warners said he'd recently come in and talked about getting back into the game. And so Harold Faltermeyer is watching the movie next week!" Nothing is set in stone, however, and even if the composer agrees, Smith has his own conditions. What I'm looking for is that old Harold Faltermeyer sound that I grew up on. If he's moved on from that sound, I'll respect that. I'll go get a Casio and f*** it up myself!"

Head beyond the jump for some end-of-the-week mood music ...

Filmmakers Who Love To Talk About Movies

Let's face it; none of us would be here if we didn't like talking about movies. If you are anything like me, you spend your days scouring for movie news, reading about your favorite films and directors, and sometimes even getting into the odd heated argument. So while most of us play armchair quarterback when it comes to the art of movie making, there are plenty of honest to goodness artists who love to talk about movies just as much as we do, and one person who needs no such prompting is Quentin Tarantino.

The director recently filmed an introductory clip to There Will Be Blood for Sky Movies and despite being a little surprised at the idea that Tarantino and P.T. Anderson are movie BFF's, it did get me thinking about some of the other directors who love to talk about the movies. The rise of the DVD commentary opened up a whole new world to movie geeks like myself, giving us the chance to learn more about the movies we love. But as interesting as it is to hear a filmmaker talk about their work -- sometimes I think it's even better to hear them talk about somebody else's movie.

Which Film People Could Be Guest Judges on 'American Idol'?

Filed under: Music & Musicals », Fandom », Home Entertainment »

Quentin TarantinoPardon me if I don't shed a tear that Paula Abdul will not be returning as a judge on the next season of American Idol. As a relentless cheerleader for the contestants, she was beloved, as a foil for the evil Simon Cowell, she was feisty, but her time has come and gone. (And I say that lovingly as a former high school classmate. OK, she never knew I existed, but still...) Producers have already lined up Victoria Beckham as a guest judge, but I think they should look to the fabulous film world for future guest judge-ships.

Here are my quick picks.

  • Kevin Smith. He'd definitely be funny, could snap back at Simon's ferocity, and could dish out insults as needed.
  • Drew Barrymore. She would bring Paula's positive vibe and be very kind when rejecting the talentless.
  • Julie Andrews. The great star of The Sound of Music and The Princess Diaries returns in the The Tooth Fairy next January.
  • Mel Gibson. Don't you want to see the grizzled, suicidal star of The Road Warrior and Lethal Weapon telling no-talents where they can stick their singing voice? His Australian heritage would also set him up for epic battles with Simon Cowell. And Edge of Darkness is scheduled for next January.
  • Jennifer Lopez. The lady has been out of the film spotlight for a while, but will return in The Back-Up Plan. She knows her music, and could rival Randy in telling contestants "yo, dog!"
  • Quentin Tarantino. Bring him back as a judge this time, not just a coach or "guest director."

Who do you want to see sitting on that infamous panel of judges?

'Clerks' and 'Chasing Amy' Head to Blu-ray

Filed under: Comedy », Fandom », Home Entertainment »

In the View Askew world, we've already got Zack and Miri Make a Porno, Clerks 2, Dogma, and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back on Blu-ray. Now, finally, Kevin Smith has revealed that his two big classics are getting their turn. Over on Twitter, Smith announced that both Clerks and Chasing Amy are getting the high-def treatment this November.

Two films loved for their gritty visual feel, it's not surprising that it took this long for the pair to be released. But now that they are, the Blu-rays won't be without added perks. Each will have one hefty feature to lure fans to the Blu-Askew. Chasing Amy will contain a "look-back docu," while Clerks, which will be the same as Clerks X, will get Oh, What a Lovely Tea Party. That is, unless it's too big for a disc yet again!

Tea Party is Jennifer Schwalbach Smith's directorial debut, boasting three hours of behind-the-scenes shenanigans from the filming of Jay and SIlent Bob Strike Back. It's already been bumped twice due to its size -- once from Strike Back, and once from Clerks X -- but I imagine Blu-ray will have enough space for the doc.

Are these two extras enough to re-invest in the films, or will you be sticking to regular DVD?

Me, I'm just waiting for Mallrats.

Quick List: Romance for Boys

Filed under: Comedy », Romance », Fandom », Lists »

It's funny, but I've been watching Kevin Smith movies for a long time now, but it was only as I was reading through Total Film's list of the Best & Worst: Kevin Smith, that I realized something that I never really thought all that much about before -- and what was my big epiphany? Well, I finally discovered that Smith's films in the end are just rom-coms with poop jokes. Smith may have been considered a foul-mouthed stoner for most of his career, but now that I've looked beyond his shtick, I've finally come to the conclusion that the guy is a big old softy. Which got me thinking: Is there such a thing as romance for boys?

Now if you're the observant type, you've probably noticed I'm not a dude, so what do I know, right? But I've been told time and again that I'm not the 'average girl' (whatever that means) when it comes to my movie tastes, so I'm going to put that theory to the test, and get in touch with my masculine side to create a list of romantic movies for men.

Jason Lee Reunites with Kevin Smith!

Filed under: Comedy », Casting »

It sounded promising when Jason Lee was set to get Thicker back in 2008. Perhaps we'd finally get another taste at the old Lee, the one that made every Kevin Smith movie he graced all the tastier, especially when he'd rant away with all of his comedic snarkiness. He may have left that film, but Lee found an even better project to fill his now Earl-free days. Variety reports that he, along with Michelle Trachtenberg, have signed on for roles in A Couple of Dicks -- Kevin Smith's first project not written by his own pen.

The film, which stars Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan, focuses on two cops who search for a stolen baseball card, rescue a sexy Mexican woman, and face gangsters. With the buddy cop roles long-filled, Lee won't have much face time, but hopefully it will be quality face time. While Trachtenberg plays Willis' daughter, Lee will play her stepfather.

At least it's something. Not a lot, but a hell of a lot more interesting that the family fare that Lee keeps doing. That being said, and even loving Willis' classic cop ways, I wish Lee was taking the role. Wouldn't he make an excellent gruff detective? (If he can't be the new Fletch, he could at least get a blockbuster buddy cop film! Willis and Morgan are already a far cry from the originally cast Robin Williams and James Gandolfini.)

But maybe better fare is on the horizon. What sort of starring role would you like to see Jason Lee take on?

Seann William Scott and Adam Brody Join Kevin Smith's 'Dicks'

Filed under: Action », Comedy », Casting », Warner Brothers », Newsstand »

Like most of the moviegoing world, we here at Cinematical are pretty excited for Kevin Smith's new comedy, A Couple of Dicks, particularly since Smith is promising it'll be the next Roadhouse. The world needs another Roadhouse, just like this generation needs a new buddy cop comedy.

We won't have too long to wait, as The Hollywood Reporter says that the film begins shooting on Monday in New York -- but before it goes before cameras, Smith has added Seann William Scott and Adam Brody to the cast. Scott will play a thief known as "The Sh*t Bandit" due to his trademark of leaving a scatological gift for his robbery victims. (Remember, Smith didn't write this script, Robb and Mark Cullen did. But now we know one reason he liked it!) Brody will play "an abrasive detective" who is less than thrilled to be working with Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan's maverick cops. He seems so young to be the abrasive, badass type ... but hey, it's New York. You grow up fast there.

Still missing from the cast is one Mexican beauty, who Willis and Morgan rescue in the course of their adventure, and who holds the key to millions of laundered drug money. I bet we'll meet her next week, but you could throw out a few casting guesses or recommendations just to pass the time, as Dicks isn't due in theaters until February 26, 2010.

Kevin Smith's Kid Reviews 'Twilight'

Filed under: Fandom », Trailers and Clips »

Move over Ben Lyons, there's a new critic in town. During MTV's 457-part interview with Kevin Smith, they somehow found their way to Twilight. Smith admitted to watching the film with his wife and daughter, and, though it wasn't his cup of tea, could see why so many young girls love it dearly (cue Robert Pattinson). He then called up his daughter, who proceeded to dole out her personal review of Twilight -- which goes something like ... "(giggles) I don't know (giggles) I just liked it." Then, when Pattinson's name comes up, she smiles and blushes, while Smith questions whether or not she's really his daughter.

It's all sorta cute and playful, and they all have great attitudes about it (I have a daughter arriving in under a month, so I can't really talk) -- but it did make me wonder which of Smith's films his daughter will like the best once she's old enough to watch them. This is the first video I've ever seen of his daughter, and if she's a mega-huge Twilight fan, then maybe she'll fancy Chasing Amy or Dogma the most. I don't know; you tell me -- watch the video below.

Kevin Smith Will 'Hit Somebody' With Mitch Albom

Filed under: Comedy », Drama », Independent », Music & Musicals », Sports », Scripts », DIY/Filmmaking », Newsstand »

A hockey movie from Kevin Smith seems like the most natural thing in the world -- so natural, in fact, that this news seems like a nonevent. What is surprising is the source material and writing partner Smith is employing, as he's teaming up with Mitch Albom to film an adaptation of Warren Zevon's song Hit Somebody. If you're a hockey fan, you know the bittersweet song about a Canadian farmboy who desperately wants to play hockey, but is good for nothing but fighting. I've embedded it below so you can check it out and follow along with Smith's ideas.

The film will be set in the 1970s in the final days of old-time hockey, the World Hockey Association, and blood-splattered ice. "The song's been one of my favorites since I heard it and I've always seen this whole movie behind," Smith told MTV News. I got in touch with Mitch because Warren Zevon has passed on and we started talking about it and he was into it and into what I was kind of pitching." While the story will have some comedy, Smith is styling it to be one of his most serious films yet. "I never once thought about winning awards or anything, but that movie I think can do it. If I play my cards right and we get the right people in it, it could be an award-type movie."

He's aiming to start filming in 2010 or 2011, naming it as the "the one I really want to do in a big, bad way." Perhaps this film is that "something else" he was hinting at. I think Smith could really get under the skin of a broken down hockey player, and if there's one person who can rescue the sport from being condemned to Slapshot remakes, it would be him.
