Another 'Police Academy' Movie! Finally!

Filed under: Comedy », RumorMonger », Fandom », Newsstand », Remakes and Sequels »

Just the other day I was chatting with a friend about movie franchises, and for some reason Police Academy came up. (Now I remember -- the Arizona Cardinals' running back is named Hightower!) I was of the opinion that we were totally due for a reboot of the entire Police Academy franchise -- with maybe a passing of the torch sort of thing between some old cast members and new ones. They could update it, modernize it -- maybe throw in a few young, fresh names (I could totally see Jay Baruchel starring in a role) and have some fun.

Cut to today: The Sun had a chat with Steve Guttenberg recently, and it looks like a new Police Academy flick is totally in the works. He says, "We are doing a new movie and it is going to be great fun. A script is being written and so far it is really great, everyone from the original movies who is still around will return." Guttenberg also said that both Kim Cattrall (Police Academy) and Sharon Stone (Police Academy 4) have been asked to return, but neither has "said yes yet." I'm a big fan of the series (or most of it, at least), and so hopefully they've got something tasty cookin' in the oven.

For Guttenberg, however, one sequel just ain't enough. He notes, "Tom Selleck, Ted Danson and I are looking to make another Three Men And A Baby movie. It's called Three Men and A Bride. The script is pretty much written and we are really keen to get that made. We're very hopeful." Hey, more power to them ... although, in 2009 (or 2010, 2011), I'm not sure how well a film starring Ted Danson, Tom Selleck and Steve Guttenberg would do at the box office? Iffy on that one. You?

[Thanks Jim]

Kim Cattrall Makes a Porno?

Not long ago we told you how Sex and the City star Kim Cattrall had signed on to star in a new film called Miss January. In the original article over at Variety, they described her character as a "1980s cinema siren who is now a 50-year-old single mother in the middle of a child custody battle." Now, what they don't tell you -- and what a little birdie just whispered to Cinematical -- was that Cattrall's "1980s cinema siren" is actually a 1980s porn star named Monica Velour. Our tipster adds that "she has no gag reflex." Well okay then.

Miss January is currently in production, and also stars Brian Dennehy, Dustin Ingram and Keith David. Unfortunately for all you Cattrall stalkers out there, the film takes place years after the character was a porn star, and so chances are the sex in this city will be rather tame (featuring no more than one partner) and not recorded on cheap, sleazy video. Sorry dudes. The film was written and is being directed by Keith Bearden, and there's currently no release date scheduled.

What do you Sex and the City fans think -- can Cattrall pass as a 1980s porn star?

News Bites: Ratner, Reiner, Ferrell and Sex ... with Conan?

Filed under: Drama », Casting », Deals », Scripts »

Busy Friday in Hollywood -- here, let us catch you up:

-- While being on television didn't get the Sex and the City women strong cinematic careers, proving themselves in the feature film has got the casting ball rolling. Just the other day I posted how Kristin Davis was heading to a Couples Retreat, and now Samantha is getting her time to shine. Variety reports that Kim Cattrall is going to star in a new film called Miss January, from writer/director Keith Bearden. Unlike the success the actress earned after her early Mannequin days, her character is "a 1980s cinema siren who is now a 50-year-old single mother in the middle of a child custody battle." Will putting down the Manolos and picking up the kidlets get Cattrall some awards love?

-- Seems Summit it keen on keeping their Sex Drive on high, seeing as they've put that film's creators, Sean Anders and John Morris, in charge of a new comedy about -- and check out this morbid concept -- a dude who knocks up his one-night stand, then is forced to take care of the baby when the mother is killed in a car wreck. While you try to find the humor in that one ...

... this should certainly make you laugh: According to AICN, Brett Ratner is a lock to direct the new Conan film. Not sure why Ratner's the choice here (especially since this film's main character is a male full of muscles), but apparently the idea is to go back to square one and see if they can't franchise this sucker. I personally think Conan's a little too deep for The Brett, but I guess we'll see ...

Review: Sex and the City -- Kim's Take

I was, admittedly, a bit of a latecomer to the Sex and the City craze. For years, I staunchly refused to watch the show, convinced from what I knew of it that it wasn't for me. It struck me as self-absorbed and superficial, episode after episode of successful, independent women who should have been perfectly content with their lives, endlessly bemoaning what they didn't have -- Prince Charming and "happily-ever-after" -- over endless rounds of Cosmos. Who wants to listen to four women talking about nothing but fashion and men? Not me, said I. I didn't even drink Cosmos for the longest time, just because I associated them with the show.

And then, one day a few years ago I was going nuts being confined to bed rest with my last child. I'd watched everything on Court TV and more sappy Lifetime movies than any one person should ever have to stomach, I was desperate for something else to watch to pass the time. And there, right by the DVD player, was my oldest daughter's most prized possession: Season One of Sex and the City. What the hell, it couldn't be any worse than re-watching Tori Spelling in Mother, May I Sleep With Danger, right? I slipped the first disc into the DVD player ... and didn't stop watching until I'd watched every episode of the first season. And then I was hooked on the adventures of Carrie, Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte.

Review: Sex and the City

Sometimes I feel like my cultural literacy is shamefully limited. I watch a lot of movies but somehow I rarely watch many television shows. I only have the most basic cable, so I could tell you all about the most fascinating shows on Austin community access but nothing about, say, Sex and the City. I saw the movie Sex and the City without ever having watched an episode, with an unfortunate tendency to refer to it as Sex in the City, and with such an ignorance of pop culture that I kept mixing up Carrie Bradshaw with Carrie Underwood. I brought a friend to the screening who was well acquainted with the TV show, in case I needed help, and whispered things like "Is that the theme song?" and "What's the joke?"

Fortunately, for those of us who are encountering Sex and the City for the first time, the movie's opening sequence provides compressed backstories about the four characters so we don't feel lost and confused. But even if we didn't know who had done what and whom and where, the storyline -- set five years after the TV show's end -- is not difficult to follow.

New Clips from 'Sex and the City' Hit the Net

Filed under: Comedy », Drama », Romance », Trailers and Clips »

With the end of this month comes final confirmation: Can Sex and the City make it as a feature film? To continue to whet our Sex appetites, a whole slew of clips popped up over on the net. Above you can check out the, erm, fleshed out waxing clip from the trailer, and after the jump there's a wedding announcement, that Cinderella clip, some "coloring," home shopping, and Carrie getting a little bit too "pat on the head," "I've been there" preachy with Jennifer Hudson.

As someone who enjoyed the show (whilst ignoring the idiotic fashions and some of the crappy men), this is looking to be the sort of film that will appeal to fans ... although it will be a little different than its skin-risque HBO roots. A few years passed and now it seems that we won't be getting the usual fleshy shocker from Samantha -- rumor has it that the only woman who celebrates full-flesh is Cynthia Nixon. It's too bad that age seems to be making the women cling to the clothing, but then again, that's SatC for you -- partially stereotype-breaking and partially stereotype-clutching.

'Sex and the City' Gets a New Theme Song

Filed under: Comedy », Romance », Warner Brothers », Fandom », Movie Marketing », HBO Films »

There is nothing new about the debate over rampant commercialism and Sex and the City. So, I'm not even going to go into whether empowerment can be achieved through shopping. But, Fergie's new theme song for the big-screen SATC has hit the web, and she has no qualms about making an ode to designer labels. Titled Labels or Love, the track sounds like a My Humps redux, and frankly, it's pretty awful. For starters, throughout most of the song I had a hard time understanding what she was even saying. But when you can make out the lyrics, they include such philosophical statements as: "Love is a like a runway," "Stop chasing those boys and shop some more," and "No emotional baggage, just replace it with Dior."

Fans of the show have been awaiting the feature film version with bated breath since the news first hit, and the fever pitch has only risen now that Kim Cattrall and Sarah Jessica Parker have been letting the spoilers fly. Unfortunately, SATC was never really my thing, so I only have a passing curiosity to see how they translate Carrie and the gang on the screen. One thing is for sure, if this theme song is an indication of the music for the movie, I definitely won't be buying the soundtrack.

Take a listen and tell me what you think: Did Fergie improve upon the original? Or is this track best reserved for the closing credits?

Kim Cattrall Lets Loose Some 'Sex and the City' Secrets

Filed under: Comedy », Drama », Romance », RumorMonger »

For the most part, buzz about Sex and the City has come from crazy rumors, leaked pictures, and some really cryptic chatter from Sarah Jessica Parker about just what happens with her character and Mr. Big. Now Kim Cattrall, also known as the sexy sexpert Samantha, is getting into it with her own revelations about just what happens when the four friends hit the big screen. According to what's up on MSNBC, I'm starting to wonder just how much this film is going to resemble its television start, and whether it will bring each character to new levels, or just stray too far from what the HBO series laid out.

Head after the jump to hear what she has to say. Of course, "secrets" means "spoilers," so proceed with caution. To be fair, there aren't specific plot details in what she says, but rather some twists in store for her character and the world of Sex and the City.

New Line Plans 'Sex and the City' Trilogy, Source Says

Filed under: Comedy », Romance », Deals », New Line », Fandom », Newsstand »

What is it with New Line and trilogies? Bob Shaye had originally planned to film all three of Philip Pullman's Dark Materials books -- hard to say if that will come to pass now, after the weekend grosses -- and now the British press is reporting that New Line also plans to make three Sex and the City movies. According to the Daily Mail, "the producers are already working on a script for a second movie" and "they are exercising the sequel option in all of the stars' contracts. They want it to be a franchise and they think they can stretch it over at least three movies." Isn't that a little hasty? I'm not suggesting Sex and the City isn't popular, but is it popular beyond a very special upper-middle-class lady-who-lunches type of demographic? Do we know for sure whether the success of the TV show will translate into theatrical success? Nope.

Meanwhile, although the film just recently wrapped shooting in Manhattan, a trailer has already been cranked out and thrown to the public. Why so early? Some are speculating that the crafty Shaye may have planned this a little bit in advance to offset an expected less than thrilling opening weekend for The Golden Compass. I guess the idea was to say "Look, here's another reason to extend my contract beyond 2008!" Sex and the City is being hastily assembled as we speak for an early summer release, and if there is a catfight between Sarah Jessica Parker and Kim Cattrall at the press junket, we will bring it to you live.

FIRST LOOK: 'Sex and the City' Trailer!

Filed under: Comedy », Romance », Trailers and Clips »

Yes, the day you've all been waiting for is here. We've finally got an exclusive Sex and the City trailer full of Sarah Jessica Parker's Carrie, and a little side serving of Samantha, Charlotte, Miranda, and of course, Mr. Big. It's one of those montage trailers, so you won't get all of your plot questions answered, but there are a few things to note. There's scenes of Carrie in a wedding dress that doesn't look like a hideous nightmare, plus more runways, shots of New York, and the ladies strutting their stuff. However, we're going to have to wait a little bit longer to see a certain almost-American Idol, Stanford, and the rest of the crew. That being said, we should get more soon enough -- the film will hit screens on May 30, 2008. Check out the trailer above, or head over to Moviefone to see it in glorious HD.
