Amy Heckerling Gets Vampy with Krysten Ritter

I hope you don't hate vampires, because they don't seem to be going anywhere. Now Amy Heckerling, the woman behind Fast Times at Ridgemont High and Clueless, is getting in on the bloodsucking. According to Screen Daily, Parlay Films has grabbed the international rights to an upcoming romantic comedy called Vamps, that Heckerling will write and direct.

"The film will be a modern-day tale of two young female vampires living the good life in New York until love enters the picture and each has to make a choice that will jeopardize their immortality." Krysten Ritter will star as one of the lead vamps, and they're still searching for the other bloodsucker. This marks a big jump from the actress, who has moved from bubbly side gigs on shows like Gilmore Girls and Veronica Mars to some cinematic supporting roles, a lead gig in the web series Woke Up Dead, and now her first starring film job.

Perhaps I'm being overly hopeful, but it's time for Heckerling to bring us her next comedy classic, and I'm hoping this is it. There was a 13-year span between Ridgemont and Clueless, and it's been 14 years since Cher found love with Josh, so could this be the next Heckerling extravaganza we won't want to heckle? Or, just another project in an oversaturated market?

'Darkness Falls' Scribe Turns Jon Heder Into a Zombie

Filed under: Comedy », Horror », Home Entertainment », Trailers and Clips »

It's time for more zombies and some undead love that doesn't have sharp teeth and teenage angst. Crackle (a TV/movie/media goodness website) has just launched a new web series called Wake Up Dead. Yeah, it's more on the TV side of things, being a series and all, but it's got enough Hollywood connections to make it Cinematical friendly. And it's a zombie comedy. Who doesn't like zombies?

The brainchild of John Fasano (the pen behind Another 48 Hours, Universal Soldier: The Return, Darkness Falls and helmer behind Rock 'n' Roll Nightmare), Dead follows a university student (Jon Heder) who wakes up dead. But rather than being a drooling, brain-dead zombie a la Dawn of the Dead, he's basically just himself -- or himself mixed with the perks and downfalls of undead life. (Krysten Ritter, John Gad, Wayne Knight, and Lexi Alexander also star.)

I talked with Fasano over the weekend, and he describes the show as "Brazil's corporate nihilism meets Shaun of the Dead," birthed out of his unhappiness with his experience on Darkness Falls. He grabbed his mom's old admonishment: "One of these days you're going to wake up dead," and started morphing it into a zombie-filled feature spec, and ultimately had it rejigged into this web series. As a movie bonus, Fasano says: "look for subliminal cuts from my earliest film, Mystery Science Theater alum Zombie Nightmare -- the Montreal lensed bad cult classic starring Adam West and Tia Carrere. You can catch glimpses of Canadian Heavy Metal God Jon Thor as a zombie, as well as a young screenwriter names John Fasano under the Zombie Makeup. Nightmare is finally getting the DVD treatment this year -- look for it in all of its crappiness."

Check it out and let us know what you think below! Perhaps delight in a Zombieland/Dead double feature?

Jenna Jameson Teaches People 'How to Make Love'

Filed under: Comedy », Independent », Casting », Scripts », Cinematical Indie »

Remember that conversation in Chasing Amy between Alyssa and Banky? "So for you, to f--k means to penetrate. You're used to the more traditional definition. You, inside some girl you duped, jackhammering away, not noticing the bored look in her eyes." "Hey, I always notice that bored look in her eyes." Methinks Banky might have benefited from this new indie flick on the way, from Scott Culver, called How to Make Love to a Woman (written by Dennis Kao).

With the help of Jenna Jameson, The Hollywood Reporter posts that Josh Meyers, Krysten Ritter, Ian Somerhalder, Eugene Byrd, and Lindsay Richards will learn a little of that lovin' style. The film will focus on Meyers, who plays a "music executive with no idea how to satisfy his girlfriend (Ritter)." He goes to his musician friends for advice (bands like Red Jumpsuit and Hellogoodbye appear in the film), and somehow is lucky enough to get advice from Jameson as well, but there's a problem in all this: his girlfriend's hot, childhood friend (Somerhalder) pops up. Byrd, meanwhile, will play Meyers' best friend.

Now the question becomes: Will the film just be funny, or will the real-life, unsatisfying lovers learn a thing or two?

Casting Bites: Krysten Ritter, Willie Macc, and Rob Huebel

Filed under: Comedy », Romance », Casting »

It's almost Friday! ...and here are some casting nibblets courtesy of Variety:
  • After having to stare at Isla Fisher's god-awful get-ups in Confessions of a Shopaholic, Krysten Ritter is now getting a starring role -- and hopefully without the eye-sore fashions. (If you haven't seen them, consider yourself lucky.) Ms. Ritter, who has had stints on Veronica Mars, Gilmore Girls, and 27 Dresses is now starring in She's Out of My League with Jay Baruchel -- as the perfect woman, no less. The flick is about a normal guy who finds the perfect girl, but then begins to sabotage the relationship with his own insecurities and the influence of his friends and family.
  • Meanwhile, College Hill's Willie Macc has nabbed a part in Chicago Pulaski Jones, that Cedric the Entertainer movie about a young dancer who is looking for money and fame, but must avenge the death of his uncle. While we don't know how this puppy will turn out, it will, hopefully, at least be better than Macc's last gig -- Meet the Spartans.
  • Finally, there's Rob Huebel. After getting the distinctive role of "MILF Island Host" on 30 Rock, he has scored a role in I Love You, Man, the upcoming comedy that has Paul Rudd hunting around and finding a best friend and best man in Jason Segel. Huebel will play "a handsome but cheesy co-worker" of Rudd's, and I guess a dude who doesn't make the cut.

Dancy and Ritter are Also 'Shopaholics'

Back in August, Isla Fisher was tapped to head the big-screen adaptation of Sophie Kinsella's bestselling novel Confessions of a Shopaholic, which was going to be filmed under the British title, The Secret Dream World of a Shopaholic. Now the film is back to its US title, has a new start date popping up next month, and more cast to revel in the world of shopping along with Fisher. The Hollywood Reporter has posted that Hugh Dancy and Krysten Ritter have signed on to co-star.

Shopaholic, which is being produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and directed by Muriel's Wedding helmer PJ Hogan, is about a woman named Rebecca (Fisher), who works as a financial journalist in New York City -- one who writes for "Successful Saving." While most of her life is on the up and up, Rebecca has a serious shopping addiction that she can't afford, so she has to find "creative solutions" to kill her debt. And, since this is a romcom, she also falls for a successful entrepreneur she's covering for the magazine. One, perhaps, that can afford her over-the-top shopping ways?

The Jane Austen Book Club member Hugh Dancy won't be the object of Isla's affection, but rather the editor of her magazine. Ritter, meanwhile, will play her best friend, Suze. Ritter is also "Gina the Goth" in the upcoming romcom 27 Dresses, but is probably better known for her roles on Veronica Mars (the exuberant Gia Goodman) and Gilmore Girls (the also-exuberant Lucy). Now all we need is Rebecca's romantic interest, and the film will be set to shoot next month in New York and Connecticut.
