Classic Cameos: Lance Armstrong in 'Dodgeball'

Filed under: Comedy », Trailers and Clips »

With Charlton Heston's stint in Wayne's World 2, Jeffrey M. Anderson wrote about the cameos that take into account the celebrity's personality and comment on it. But I want to take it in a slightly different direction. Love him or hate him (as some commenters seem to), Lance Armstrong managed to take part in one of my favorite cameos, and when he got his shot on screen, he didn't just pop up to say something funny, or show up in the most unlikely of places. He was the only person truly suitable to shame Vince Vaughn's Peter Le Fleur in Dodgeball.

Right before the last big tournament game, LaFleur decides to quit, leaving his teammates stranded. He's drinking, fully wallowing in a self-pity party when he runs into Lance. Armstrong cannot believe Peter is quitting and quickly and casually lays a heap of guilt and shame on LaFleur's shoulders. "Well, I guess if a person never quit when the going got tough, they wouldn't have anything to regret for the rest of their life."

When you're in full self-pity mode and not showing up to a big game, the last person you want to run into is the man who beat cancer out of his testicles, lungs, abdomen, and brain before becoming a Tour de France hotshot. It's like whining about a scratch to the person who lost a finger. Nothing is abstract, no one is comparing apples to oranges. LaFleur is simply all-out shamed, and with every tick of Vaughn's so-slight facial expressions we can feel the weight of it. Check out the clip after the jump.

Who Should Play Lance Armstrong on the Big Screen?

Filed under: Drama », Sports », Deals », RumorMonger »

The speedy cyclist may have had his own chances to shine on the big screen, most notably when he shamed Vince Vaughn's Peter La Fleur in Dodgeball, but it's time for Lance Armstrong to get his biopic. The Hollywood Reporter posts in a surprisingly short news blip that the athlete's cinematic story might finally be coming out of gestation. An unnamed writer "well-versed in sports comeback stories" has signed on, and production could kick into gear early next year.

It's about time. There's only so many times one can watch Breaking Away before they want something new, and Armstrong's story is not only ripe for a bio, it's also a ridiculously recognizable story. There aren't many athletes who become as recognizable outside their sport as the cancer-beating cyclist. He beat the disease out of his testicles, lungs, abdomen, and brain, and went on to break records and win the epic Tour de France seven consecutive years.

Almost three years ago, Jake Gyllenhaal was seen all over the place with Armstrong, and it soon came out that Sony was quietly developing a feature and Jake wanted to nab the part. But three years is a long time, and Jake's busy with Persian life, so I imagine the casting door is wide open. So who should play Lance? Is Mr. Gyllenhaal right for the part, or is someone else better suited to battle cancer and kick arse in the Tour?

Celeb Shorts to Watch Out For: Armstrong, Wilson, MacFarlane & Malkovich

Filed under: Shorts », Fandom »

It's been a great year for celebrity short films. Often, you hear about some celeb offerings that you imagine to be all sorts of great due to the talent involved, but then your expectations rarely live up to reality. Sometimes they're fun, and sometimes they're truly terrible. Recently, I gave you a heads up about shorts from Jennifer Aniston and Maggie Gyllenhaal, but there are also some others that you should keep an eye out for as you lurk the web, itching for a something brief to make you laugh.

First, there's a little short called Lance is a Jerk. Rainn Wilson stars as an over-eager personal assistant who just got the job of his life -- working for the famous Tour de France winner. There's lots of slapstick, and staying true to its title, lots of jerky Lance Armstrong, who is not too shabby as the demanding star. But of course, the real spark comes from Wilson, who makes some typical gags seem fresh. Secondly, for all of you Family Guy fans lurking about, there is a short called Life is Short (you can check out a trailer here). Warning: it isn't the greatest of shorts, and is pretty goofy with all sorts of typical jokes. However, it's worth the 12 minutes to see all the bits with the main man himself, Seth MacFarlane, who guest-stars as the short guy's shrink. (There's also a pretty good surprise cameo from a Buffy alum to boot.) Finally, there's a really brief short that is all sorts of wonderful for its simple, clever premise: Specialized Technicians Required: Being Luis Porcar. Luis is a man who does the Spanish dubbing for John Malkovich movies, and in this short, which is only 2 minutes long, he explains his job, while John Malkovich does the English dubbing. It's simple, and much less intricate than Being John Malkovich, but it's definitely funny and I imagine it will hit the net at some point.

So That's Why They're Attached at the Hip: Jake to Play Lance

Just to get those of you too mature to read gossip blogs up to speed, Jake Gyllenhaal and Lance Armstrong have been spending a lot of time together lately. Every freaking paparazzi picture of Gyllenhaal (and there are a lot of them), whether he's working out, riding his bike, or just being Jake, features Armstrong, grinning at his side. Hell, they even went to France together to watch some big bike race that I hear is going on over there. Which is cool and all, but the paparazzi keeps a frighteningly close eye on Gyllenhaal, and it's safe to say that Lance hadn't really be around at all until a couple of weeks ago, so their sudden BFF stutus is somewhat surprising.

Thanks to Nikke Finke, however, all is now explained: Sony's putting together an Armstrong biopic, and Gyllenhaal wants the gig. Dude, seriously -- rebellious teen, cancer survivor, seven-time Tour de France winner? I smell Oscar!
