'MacGruber' Movie Going for Hard-R Laughs
Filed under: Comedy », Fandom », Newsstand »

I don't need to sit here and spew off a list of unsuccessful Saturday Night Live-related movies, because we're all well aware of their track record when it comes to stretching 30-second skits into full-length feature films. But maybe the problem lies in the amount of foul-mouthed filth on screen, which is why the folks behind the latest SNL flick MacGruber have decided to get completely nutty and go for a straight-up, balls-out hard-R comedy.
Speaking to Vulture about the film, SNL star Bil Hader (who's not listed as a cast member, but will almost certainly make a cameo) says, "I read the script, and it's like a hard-R comedy, and it totally works. It's hilarious. It's kind of in the vein of, like, eighties action movies, like there's a very definitive bad guy. I don't know if I can talk about the plot too much, but it's hilarious. The thing that kind of blew my mind about it is that it's like a HARD-R movie. I was like, "What is this? This is f**king ugly. You guys are really going to do this?" And they're like, "Yup." And I was like, "That is awesome. That is f**king hilarious." So far the cast of MacGruber (not counting cameos ... and we know these guys love their little cameos) includes Will Forte, Kristen Wiig, Val Kilmer and Ryan Phillippe
I actually dug the whole 80's action movie vibe in Pineapple Express, but I've spoken to a slew of people who were either turned off by it or didn't "get" it. Will it work for MacGruber? Is the answer to SNL's box office woes a film that's filthy, nasty and unapologetic? What do you think the chances are of this flick actually succeeding?

It's the casting opportunity of a lifetime! If you're in Albuquerque or Sante Fe from August 8 to September 12, you can work as a stand-in or extra on Saturday Night Live's feature film version of MacGruber. And of course, jettison into cinematic history! Or more likely oblivion, but at least they're paying! And it's all over at Craigslist.First, they need stand-ins for the four stars -- Will Forte, Kristin Wiig, Ryan Philippe, and Val Kilmer. If you've got the look, and their exact measurements -- no 6'2" Wiig impersonators or 5'1" Kilmer look-alikes allowed -- you can fill out a talent application and get considered for the honor. But if you don't look like those guys, there are a whole slew of extras required. They're looking for a string quartet, upscale men and women, twenty-something club-goers, tattooed/scarred burly wrestlers and experienced martial artists, "Russian-looking men," and some Native Americans. But don't bother applying if you're ordinary. They want "INTERESTING" character faces.
So this is really happening. Yes, Jenni confirmed it, but it's just so very hard to believe it. So, since it is, I can only hope that Richard Dean Anderson throws his hat in the ring to be a Forte stand-in. Now that would be something to watch out for.
MacGruber: Because 'SNL' Movies Have Such a Great Track Record

Why not make a movie based around one of the unfunniest recurring characters of late, the normally likeable Will Forte's MacGruber? Yes, it's true. Monika wrote in May that Lorne Michaels said he's considering a feature-length film version of the Saturday Night Live MacGruber sketch, and now Variety and The Hollywood Reporter are confirming that the wheels are in Mac-motion. They are also reporting that Val Kilmer and Ryan Phillipe could join Wiig and Forte in this comedy of errors, which is being written by Forte and fellow SNL writers John Solomon and Jorma Taccone, who will also direct. The MacGruber skits on Saturday Night Live poke fun at the popular MacGyver TV series, which aired from 1985 to 1992 and starred Richard Dean Anderson as a secret agent who concocted useful devices from the objects around him -- hence the term MacGyvering. MacGruber, who is MacGyver's long-lost son, is not as successful as dear old dad at defusing situations or bombs, and ends up getting himself, his assistant Vicky (Kristen Wiig), and whoever that week's hapless guest host is blown up.
'MacGruber' May Be Next SNL Film

The season might be over after Will Ferrell wrapped it up in a nice bow, but the Saturday Night Live train keeps truckin'. When the George Foster Peabody Awards were held the other day in New York City, it became an SNL news releasing zone. Besides talking about their hunt for new writers and stars, Lorne Michaels talked about movies. Specifically, he told The Hollywood Reporter that a big feature film for MacGruber is being considered, and that "it would have to be in the summer because we are back in production in the fall." Not this summer, I'd imagine, since they're "still in discussions."
Hello timely spoofs and product placement! You might remember that New Line started the quest for a new MacGyver back in March, so naturally it'd make sense to match that with Will Forte's MacGyver spoof. And oh, the product placement that's possible! If you Google "MacGruber," you'll be greeted by a sea of blog posts and clips of the SNL/Pepsi commercials where the hero hands in his mixed drink for an obsession with Pepsi products.
But could this be anything other than a short skit stretched way too long? The skits are a silly laugh, but I fear a feature might send it into eye-rolling Rob Schneider territory.
Are you primed for an hour and a half of supreme MacGruber action?
