Is 'Sex and the City 2' Planning a Big Gay Wedding?

Filed under: Comedy », Romance », RumorMonger », Remakes and Sequels »

When you're taking a series with a bunch of seasons, a never-ending parade of side characters and romances, and a central cast of four women and their significant others, lots of things get cut, like solid big-screen time for Stanford (Willie Garson) and Anthony (Mario Cantone). While the first film threw them a few brief bones (sorry for the pun), it looks like Sex and the City 2 is cooking up more, if the latest rumors are to be believed. And this is where I tell you to stop reading if you don't want spoilers. (Although really -- if you got this far and are trying to stay spoiler free, you're doing a crappy job of reading headlines.)

Anyway... Just Jared reports that In Touch has some spiffy source that reveals big things for Anthony and Stanford in the sequel currently filming. While there have been some potentially spoilerish pictures of Kim Cattrall in a wedding dress, sources say that was just a ruse. (Thank god ... would they really bring Smith back after the great sushi fiasco of Part One?) Rumor has it that the happy new man couple are tying the knot -- with the creme de la creme of officiants: Liza Minelli. "Producers are planning the ultimate gay wedding. They already signed Liza and now they're in secret talks with Barbra Streisand about being a wedding guest!"

Then, if this sequel works well, they can marry off the last of them, dear, single Samantha, and be done with it all.

Jennifer Hudson Joins 'Sex and the City: The Movie'!

Seeing as our resident Sex and the City expert (ahem, Monika) is off covering the Toronto International Film Festival, it's now my job to bring you the news that Oscar-winner (and former American Idol contestant) Jennifer Hudson has signed on to co-star in Sex and the City: The Movie. Can I get a "Hell Yeah!" on that one? According to Variety, Hudson will take on the role of Carrie Bradshaw's (Sarah Jessica Parker) assistant. And, to add to that, TV Squad managed to get hold of some spoilers, one of which describes Hudson's role as a "fashionable and sharp African-American woman in her early 20s, who moved from St. Louis to NYC in order to find love. The movie will also feature her ex-boyfriend Will." TV Squad also mentions that Hudson's name in the film will be Louise.

The film will pick up four years after the final episode on HBO, and once again revolve around the sexy lives of Carrie (Parker), Samantha (Kim Cattrall), Charlotte (Kristin Davis) and Miranda (Cynthia Nixon). Chris Noth will reprise his role as Mr. Big, while Mario Cantone will also be back as Anthony Marantino. One of the things I'm most interested in is how well this film does in theaters -- considering it's based on a cable TV series. I imagine the fanbase has grown larger over the years due to DVDs and syndication plays, but I bet a lot of folks will be watching Sex and the City: The Movie to see whether a move from pay cable to movie theater was a smart choice, or one that should have been reserved for an HBO two-hour special. How well do you think the movie will do?

HBO and New Line Confirm 'Sex in the City' Movie

Filed under: Comedy », Deals », New Line », HBO Films »

About five seconds after the end of the TV show Sex and the City in 2004, speculation started about a movie version. Now, finally -- hopefully not too late for the HBO-produced show to have fallen off everyone's radar -- HBO has announced that a Sex and the City movie is actually happening. It turns out that we should never have doubted actor Mario Cantone, who played Anthony Marantino on the show. Back in February, he mentioned that Michael Patrick King, who produced the TV series, was working on a feature film script based on the show, in which Cantone's character would figure significantly. In May, Cantone said that King would also be directing the film, in his feature directorial debut. Sarah Jessica Parker, who played Carrie Bradshaw, confirmed last month that there would be a movie and that she was involved.

Not only is Parker involved, but all four actresses who starred in the series will be returning to the film: Parker, Kim Cattrall, Cynthia Nixon and Kristen Davis. None of them have enjoyed any big movie or TV hits since Sex and the City ended, so perhaps they're hoping this will boost their careers. King is confirmed to write and direct; he's also an executive producer. HBO is finalizing a deal with New Line to finance and distribute the movie, and currently plans to start shooting in the fall. Are you looking forward to seeing the Sex and the City characters on the big screen, or are you wondering why this adaptation is really necessary?

Mario Cantone Says Michael Patrick King Will Direct 'Sex and the City'

Should there be a feature for Sex and the City? I don't know. I actually enjoy the series a lot, although I always have to ignore the terrible outfits and some over the more ridiculous scenarios. Nevertheless, the feature film adaptation of the show is still in the works, if Mario Cantone is to be believed. Back in February, Ryan Stewart shared some buzz brewing by the actor, who played Anthony Marantino on the show. According to Cantone, Michael Patrick King was penning the script, and he imagined that it would start shooting in the fall. Now it seems like the actor is a one-man PR machine for the film, as MTV's movie blog has the second round of Cantone chatter. This time, he says that King will not only write the adaptation, but will get his feature directorial debut with the material.

Methinks Cantone just has a thing for the King, but this is what he says: "Michael Patrick King was kind of the creative force behind that show, [and] he's going to be writing and directing the movie. I've known him for 24 years. He was always very brilliant. I think he's one of the best writers and directors in television. With him at the helm, it should be damn good." First stop, free PR, and second stop -- King fan club. However, the writer also seems to have a thing for Cantone. Again, the actor said that he has a major role in the adaptation: "I for surely know that I'm in it a good amount. That's exciting." Hmm. In the show, Marantino helped Charlotte get married twice. Let me stretch way out into the ether for this one -- will he now help Carrie down the aisle with Mr. Big? The big revelation for the show was her leaving the self-absorbed Russian to try again with Big, or rather, John. So, will we get a Big wedding? Heck, is this even happening?

Mario Cantone Says 'Sex and the City' Scripting, Could Film In Fall

Filed under: Comedy », Drama », Romance », Deals », RumorMonger », Fandom », Scripts », HBO Films »

Comedian and actor Mario Cantone has told the AAP that Sex and the City creator Michael Patrick King is hard at work on a feature film script for the hit television series, and the movie could begin filming as early as this fall. "I know the script is being written and I know it will be brilliant because Michael Patrick King is writing it. I know that I'm in it. I have a nice part in it, I'm told," Cantone said. He also added "nothing is definitive yet," but "if it happens, we should film it in the early fall I think." Sex and the City, centering on the adventures of four single Manhattan women played by Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis, enjoyed a successful run on HBO from 1998 to 2004, and rumors of a film project have sparked up occasionally since then.

Alleged squabbling between cast members and unsuccessful negotiating have kept the project on the backburner thus far, but several news items appeared in November 2006 indicating the film was back on track. Cantone hinted that the success of The Devil Wears Prada might have created a better atmosphere for the project to get going. "If you look at The Devil Wears Prada, it was such a big success, this would do even better. Sex and the City has the audience, and I think it's a good time to do it now, because enough time has passed since the TV series ended."
